That’s glorious! Really shows off the baritone as it’s own unique thing, neither cut down guitar nor regular ukulele. Thanks for all the reviews this year, and enjoy your Christmas break.
I played a lot of violin in my youth, but now that I'm almost 40 I am looking for something more ergonomic and generally more accessible to play which can fill the same hole or scratch the same "itch". I think the baritone ukulele might be it. Your video reviews are tremendously helpful! Thank you for your insights and observations.
Thanks Baz, got to say that’s a stunner. Would agree the logo would look great black. Thanks for your efforts this year it’s so appreciated. All the best for the festive season to you and your family, as well as the Uke community. Heres to 2023!
I look forward to seeing your reviews every week. Thank you for a wonderful year of ukulele music. Enjoy your holiday time with family and I can't wait until next year to see what you bring us.
Best wishes for a relaxing holiday and HNY Baz. You gave us an intelligent and reasoned assessment of lots of ukuleles (and some guitars one of which I bought..Gretsch..) and we know that you will do so again in 2023.
Happy that you picked that one. I am definitely excited that flight builds a baritone version of this :-). Thanks for the review and nice holidays to you!
That is real nice looking wood. A very high class instrument indeed. My favourite ukuleles are concert size but I would consider this excellent Baritone. I agree, nice rich tone as you say. Excellent review, in the usual format, as always. Have a good Christmas too, like the British Tits T-shirt!
Thanks for all your reviews this year Barry. This one is lovely and to me seems great value, 1: because of the size and amount of good quality wood and 2: it’s just beautiful and the sound is exceptional.I don’t own a baritone yet but Flight have really made great quality ones more affordable. The Caribou that SUS do being another great alternative. Can’t wait to see what some of these great brands have got coming in the new year. Have a great Christmas.
What a beautiful instrument! There NOTHING not to like. Great review, as per Baz. I'd like to thank you for another year of wonderful reviews - the weekend wouldn't be the same without them. I wish you and your family a happy, healthy, peaceful and fun Christmas holiday and hopefully we'll welcome you back in the New Year. Go easy on the Eggnog, too much will make you sick. A good Irish whiskey on the other hand....👀 😜 Have a good one mate! 👍
Thank you Baz for all that you do. Another lovely review, you could almost tempt me to try the baritone. This one is lovely; could I convince the wife that my tenor Fireball needs the rest of it's family to keep it company? Probably not... Merry Christmas Baz, enjoy your time with your family. A big thank you to your family too for their support in your endeavours. It's really appreciated. Meri Kirihimete, kia ora.
I hesitated too long before I decided to order this and sus had sold out, found one in stock elsewhere so ordered that only to find it wasn't in stock there either. However I'm told late Dec early January so I'm extra pleased to see this review and it's good scores. Didn't really need more ukes but I prefer baritone not enough about or enough players which is a shame as it has a lovely mellow tone. Merry Christmas Baz look forward to your new year reviews.xoxo
Thank you for the review. Being new to the ukulele, ( 6 months, But played guitar for 50 plus years), I was , like many others, focused on the big 3 ( K's). But I took a chance on the Flight Mustang , without paying it. Amazing! I have since played many Tenors and still feel the Flight is equal if not better then all I have played. I have been thinking about a Baritone, so I know that the Flight should be equal to my tenor in all respects. A side note, I replaced my factory strings ( which were good) with Pepe Romero Lava low G strings. Great sounding, easy playing strings. Jeff
After reviewing the Nighthawk and the Fireball Tenor and now Baritone: Did Flight improved their build of Royal Series starting with Voyager, Mustang and Spirit?
Such a great sounding baritone ukulele , great sounding great looking so what's not to like? Enjoy Christmas with your family and the best of the New Year !!!
Very nice looking ukulele. I like the black with the wood and the side sound port. I don’t like the head on this one. To much like a guitar head. Flight is really coming into its own and is making some real good quality instruments. I don’t like baritone’s but I do like the sound of this one it is very melodic. I really like it picked. Another nice review my friend. Thanks….DOC.. have a very blessed Christmas and a happy New Year.
So the fireball arrived yesterday while at work, I love my gagets and have lots of ukes and different tunings so use a roadie 3 tuner and even that struggled to the the wound strings as you seemed to. Not because of the stiff tuners but because of the strings not wanting to tune. On the box it states worth browns but as you state they don't do wound, also they seem black like anu nue,ghs or fremont. Anything but worth. Just quite confusing. Saying that on my what a tone. This uke gonna definitely get me back to practiceing finger style as it's made for that. What georgous looking and sounding instrument.
Great review Barry. That is absolutely gorgeous. Looks like it could be the perfect ukulele for me. If anyone want's to start a "GoFundMe" Get Al a new uke ..... you have my full backing. lol 🤣
i wish companies made higher quality simple spruce or cedar tops instead of the figured wood and weird cutaways most of us want regular looking instruments.
Thanks for another great review! So you play the baritone using same chord shapes like you do in regular gcea tuning ukes reviews? So this means your sample songs are like -4 transposed?
@@GotAUkulele I never really knew how it would sound this way, but it sounds awesome. And I also ask because I fear the F cord in DGBE:D F is too common to be that hard:).Thanks for your reply!
Could you share thoughts on the gap between the top-tier Hawaiian uke brands ('k brands') and mid-tier ones like Flight or Pono? What makes 'k brands' like Kanile'a, say the K1B, stand out in quality compared to Flight? I'm eyeing the Flight baritone, but not sure if splurging on the Kanile'a is worth it, even though it looks and sounds awesome.
A big part of the difference is costs - production / wages / power etc all more costly in US - but that aside I tend to find more precise, lighter builds with better quality tone woods and finishes
What i don’t like about (most) open headstocks is their thickness. Now I understand that the tuners dictate that but when Kanile'a offers the Cobra headstock carrying Stealth tuners and that in combination looks flattened as if a tank ran over it, this one here on the Flight, certainly looks, like, extra clunky.
I was close... it was mango 🤣 and a ✈️! I will also say that I don't really always get the 🥭 tone preference these days... To me they are a bit quiet and somewhat muddy for me usually, but I have heard examples I like, and I do like the unique sound of spruce on top to clean it up a bit and give it some more projection.
@@GotAUkulele I have a idea for your channel. It would be awesome if you could showcase local luthier who make ukulele on your channel .Im new to ukulele but im sure there is nice maker out there.
@@Yannick432 I've reviewed LOTS of instrument from luthiers - Rob Collins, Andy Miles, KM Ukuleles, Paul Barnard, Ken Timms, Chris Perkins, NFC, Marco Todeschini, Gregor Nowak, Martin Beck, Liam Kirby, Dave Morgan, Pete Mai, John Daniel - all on the full reviews list
I like your shirt! I couldn't really see the lower part of your shirt, and I'm afraid I initially got the wrong of the stick! I'm pretty sure that is the intention.
You know what really annoys me about Flight ukuleles and this is for people in different countries that don’t have access to a luthier or someone that they can trust to make adjustments to instruments. Why don’t they put a strap button on the body by the fretboard , especially for the larger sized instruments like the baritone. It is such a simple thing to do at the manufacturing stage nd would reap huge benefits for player
Can only say - because not everyone wants one? Speaking personally I dislike buttons in that place on small instruments and find they feel a bit restrictive. Not even a huge fan on guitars. But agreed that they should be an option.
@@GotAUkulele Thanks. Maybe that is it, its not a deal breaker for some counsumers. Having the option for smaller ukes is also a selling point for younger consumers as well. But having the option certainly increases its functionality and aesthetically its not really seen on the front. You could argue that about any aesthetic choice like having those animal print logos around the soundhole for the etc. Anyhow keep it up.
I bought one and yes I find it very beautiful and the sound is good too. But I have problems playing it, because above the seventh fret it becomes difficult to play precise. The distance between string and fretboard is there 3 mm and at fret 18 it has 5 mm. The first thought is to cut down the saddle, but I am afraid I have to send it back. 😢 Does anybody share my experience? Since this is my first baritone I have nothing to compare. Thank you for any feedback!
Sounds like a poor setup issue - the good news is this element of the ukulele is designed to be adjustable. Check the height of the base of the string above the crown of the 12th fret - the acceptable range is between 2mm and 3mm with 2.5mm being average. Much higher than that and you or a tech need to sand the base of the saddle down
I was in the local Music Store today and let them have a look at the setup. They told me it would be risky to grind down the saddle without risking a buzz. Maybe 0.5 mm but not 1 or even 2 mm, and I would need to lower it 2mm when I want 2.5 mm at the 12th fret.
Alex at SUS did a podcast with me recently and threw me some quickfire questions - one was 'is the Baritone a poor man's guitar'. I nodded yes.. and got castigated for it- but I wasn't trying to be negative and agree with your point. I think good Bari's ARE the bridge to small guitars. Not a bad thing!
As someone who knows the tenor version very very well, I have to agree with you Baz that the baritone feels even more special, even if it was a brief stint with it at SUS 🥲 top of my list!
