Luke, isn't the leakdown you were referring to on your compression tester because of the check valve in the hose and not necessarily the sealing of the engine? Sorry, don't mean to nit-pick. Great video and glad you got a tight JDM. I just installed a H6 JDM engine in a Tribeca a few weeks ago. Only $1000 and she runs strong.

I’m be using your channel to basically swap my 06 outback engine and wanted to know is they any parts I should get new and install on the engine I’m install ? Ik I’m suppose to switch all the wiring and sensors wanted to know if I should change anything or replace anything?

Hey Luke, how much oil do you put in before your compression test? And likewise I just replaced all the seals and pumps, will doing a test with the starter and oil in the engine also show me if I there are any leaks? Or will those only show after heat and drive time?

I put just one squirt in. But hard to say how much that is. Just wanted a little lub in there to prevent any scoring. This may show some major leaks, but unfortunately you usually don’t see there minor ones till the engine is fired up and builds some heat! As you suspected...

Im always concerned that it will fall over when you spin the starter..! Seems i was wrong.. So what is the difference from this and using a leak down tester ?

I'm about to swap a JDM long block ( no ecu )into my WRX. But I have to convert a bunch of the sensors, timing belt, etc to USDM since I only have a USDM ecu. I have no idea how to do a timing belt. I have watched all kinds of videos on it but I'm still scared to do it. Because then I'll have to retire it and I don't know how to do that either lol I don't suppose you might have a video on how to do timing belts and re-timing the engine coming up do you?

Another really important consideration for a Subaru engine swap, particularly if you're planning to keep your existing stock ECU, is the trigger pattern. There are two such trigger patterns. First. 36-2-2-2 crank with a 2 tooth cam sync. Second. 6 tooth crank and a 1-2-1-3, 7 tooth cam sync. Your stock ECU will only recognise one of these patterns. The crankshaft timing belt drive pulley is an easy swap, but changing the cam sync to match your ECU may not be so easy. Cam sensors read from various locations including the back of the Left Intake Cam Pulley or the rear end of the Left Intake Cam Shaft itself. The easiest way to identify which trigger pattern a wrecked engine has is to just look at the crankshaft timing belt pulley. Edit: in this video at exactly 1:04 you can see the Cam Sensor plug at the back of the Left Intake Cam Pulley. In the case that this engine had the wrong tooth pattern on the back of the Pulley it may be a simple case of swapping to a pulley with the correct tooth pattern. However if this engine was reading cam sync from the rear end of the cam shaft you could only use it with the correct ECU unless you move the sensor to the pulley which requires a special bracket cast into the stock front oil seal cap. (As visible in this video).

The leakage is internal to the gauge not the cylinder.

Are you really gonna put that engine in something without inspecting the timing belt? You really need to take the belt off so you can spin the idlers to see how noisy they are, especially the cogged one.

Exactly the video I needed Luke. I just got a jdm motor and will be doing all these things to it. Nothing like doing things right from the beginning. Btw, how much oil should be in the motor to do a compression test and cylinder leak down test? Does it need to be full? Thank you for this video!

Nice man. Doesn’t really need to have any oil in the oil pan, but just take note that a true leak-down test is most accurate when you have a warm engine with oil lining the cylinder walls. No way to recreate this condition on a engine that’s been sitting, so just squirt a little thin oil (ie 0-10w) into the spark plug holes, trying to get all sides of the cylinder walls, then rotate the engine by hand quite a few times to help smear the oil and work it into the rings. If you don’t do this, the leak-down test will be worse than what’s really representative. When the engine warms up and the pistons expand, they’ll seal up even better, but this is the best you can do with a cold engine.
