Can I tell you I need you, every single day of my life?
Dipping back into the Revolver era! I've always loved the Motown vibes from McCartney. Some excellent bass on this track.
For this cover, I listened VERY closely to isolations available on RU-vid. I heard a buried rhythm track peeking out in those isolations, which I assume is John and George. To my ear, it sounds like George doubling the bass on a fuzzy lead guitar (probably the Casino, possibly the Tennessean), with John playing open chords on the quarter notes. I unearthed and brightened that rhythm track here, expanding it to the entire song. A little personal liberty, for the sake of mix completeness.
I also recreated the brass with Cinematic Studio Brass and panned the horns all over the soundscape. The ability to separate the brass into stereo (and the glorious result) tells me that "Revolver" really needs a remix! Hope Giles Martin comes through one day.
Very nice playing the Gretsch and Rickenbacker! Despite the potential historical anachronism, I insisted on using my new Country Gent. I love showing it off. I also dug out the old Rickenbacker 320B for John's rhythm. Love seeing them paired together.
Also note the '65-66 era drumhead! Courtesy of Russ Lease. Enjoy!
Instruments:
Gretsch Country Gentleman (George Harrison)
Rickenbacker 320B (John Lennon)
Epiphone Casino (lead break, likely Paul and George)
Hofner CT Series bass
Cinematic Studio Brass - all brass, compressed via Studio One
Outro organ via Studio One
Ludwig Classic Maple 20/12/14 Black Oyster Pearl
Beatles drumhead from Russ Lease at www.BeatleSuits.com
Drums recorded via PreSonus Studio 1824C Interface (drums: 5 microphones used)
Drums mic'd with Cad Audio Stage7 7-Piece Drum Microphones (micing toms, snare & bass drum)
Drums recorded and mixed with PreSonus Studio One
Shure SM57 (under hi-hat, all other instruments)
All instruments except drums recorded on Audacity via a USB soundcard on an HP Pavilion
Guitar Amp: Vox Mini3 G2
All guitars on this track were played through the Aclam DR. ROBERT Vox UL730 simulator pedal.
Video Equipment:
Camera: Canon M50

This sounds better than the final mix! I know there were some technical limitations, but always felt Geoff Emerick really let everyone down for this song. Norman Smith could have mixed this much better. The drums are buried and sound flabby (imagine if he had close-miked the snare like he did on Ballad of John and Yoko!), the guitars are almost nonexistent and all you hear is the bass and horns.
@HeelBJC
@HeelBJC 3 года назад
Not sure we should go ahead and start crapping on Emerick without knowing the whole story. I'm sure Paul had a hand in the brass being so overpowering. In fact, we kinda know he did as it's verified that, due to wanting the brass kinda crudely ADT'd by just shifting the time a smidge and putting it on a new track. Obviously this is a bit more important of a decision when you only have 4 track tape recorders to work with. They ended up having to mixdown the various tracks several times due to Paul wanting more overdubs, which degrades the original every time you do it ever so slightly. But it adds up. By the time recording was done, basically the entire rhythm track (actually quite literally the entirety of it) was on a single track, which, given that they had started recording the backing track on separate tapes by this point in their career, means it got mixed down at least 4 times. Given this, it's unsurprising that it sounds rather weak and it's not necessarily at all a fault in how it was recorded. In fact, I'd be shocked if Emerick inexplicably recorded the drums in a different way than he did for the rest of revolver, which obviously sounds totally fine on drums. And regarding guitars being almost nonexistent, that almost certainly has nothing to do with Emerick. George Martin was far more influential in mixing decision than Emerick at this stage. Much different process than engineering, where Emerick would have the final say. And I'm certainly not coming at this from some Emerick fanboy perspective. I've long been annoyed by how he acted like he single handedly invented close miking brass with this song, which is just **complete** BS. But I also don't like taking shots at people who may not even be responsible for what they're being ranted against.

Norman Smith? You are out of your mind. Geoff Emerick not only made this song but the entire album as well as things to come. The Brass sounds the way it does on the album because there is Artificial Double Tracking on it.

@@horowizard You can still control the volume with ADT. Still doesn’t explain why the drums sound like a rubber band. It’s just a terrible mix in my opinion.

Excellent! I enjoy seeing the different guitars as much as you enjoy playing them. This was never a favorite song when it first came out in 1966, probably because I preferred the guitar sound to the horns, which I always thought was over-emphasized in the final mix. But that doesn't matter now that i can watch you play it. Bravo. I don't suppose while you are on Revolver you are in the mood to play "Dr. Robert", are you? Not sure I have ever watched anyone do that one. Plenty of guitar there for us guitar freaks.
@MichaelSokil
@MichaelSokil 3 года назад
I think the Revolver mix isn't great! Too much panning. It's unfortunate because it dampens the power of a really great song. One of the selfish pleasures of these covers is that I get to control the mix! I loved putting this one together, which allowed me to center the bass, drums and tambourine while separating the horns and unearthing the guitars. It really sparkles with the benefit of a decent mix. I do have a strong interest in covering all kinds of "Revolver" stuff. My plans are always subject to change, but right now I have two more early Beatles songs on my list, then 2 Pepper-era songs, then a likely return to "Revolver." I'm probably doing "And Your Bird Can SIng" before "Dr. Robert," but it's certainly on my list!

So.. the Casino ( i guess it's george) does the solo.. than doubled for a few bars? Solo always sounded like some tremelo.. or may leslie.. or adt on there.?

Michael, how are you playing the 5 chord short solo? You cut in to a close-up for it at 1:53, but are the Casino’s stings in standard (E) tuning for that insert?
@BeatlesCentricUniverse

What's going on with the end lick at 1:53? I hear 2 notes but don't see you playing the right 2 notes, that is, your fingering doesn't match what I'm hearing. Isn't the 2nd guitar supposed to be there before it comes in (visually) at 1:54-55??
