Got wood? Load shift on freeway after panic stop recovery - This is the second shifted load of wood job I've done this year on the freeway, and this one was much more difficult. Although I had two rotators on scene, our 75ton Big Flipper had an unexpected electrical issue and the boom could not unlock. I know my truck VERY well and knew if push came to shove, I could handle it in Hulk solo which is what I did.
The trick was to park the truck and lift so I'm not directly in the middle, but more up front, and not expect to lift the entire load in the air. That would have been catastrophic. Instead, we got enough lift to where the load could slowly slide on the trailer. The plan worked great and the load shift was corrected in minutes.

Lift the load and move the truck,......... perfect!! As always, take care and be safe my friend!!
@wewi3101

There is a way to strap that load so it cant slide forward. Use a big enough strap to wrap that load completely over the top so its incircled and cross the ends underneath and winch it down on both sides. What happens when the load tries to shift it pulls on the strap which tightens and squeezes as it moves.
@timothygeiger8271
@timothygeiger8271 Год назад
Yeah, but alot of guys are too lazy to do that much work. Of course this guy should have had more straps on the load to begin with. I've hauled so many loads of that, loaded on the west coast & deliver in the east, no problems if you don't get lazy & use minimal straps.

When oh when are the Feds going to make headache racks mandatory? Anyway, great job, and happy holidays to everyone at Pepe's. 🎄🎁💝🕎

They tried that they don't help. Flatbed is hard to haul. What's the rules now. 2 straps in 4 ft front and rear and 1 no more than 10' inbetween the ends preferred to be equal to load. I'd strap each tier. That way. Like I use to haul the gas pipe. No

@@jerrykinnin7941 why do headach racks not help?
@jerrykinnin7941
@jerrykinnin7941 Год назад
@@Jehty_ if properly secured they might help. But 4 u bolts is how most I've seen tied to the frame with. And with certain trucks ie. The aerodynamic ones with the double bunks. There's no room for them. If I ran flatbed still I'd get the headache rack that blots to the frame like cross members and fuel tanks do. But my experience a 45000 coil of steel rolls forward a 250lb piece of aluminum won't stop it. So secure the load so it don't move. Then drive like it's not secured at all. The best head racks I've seen are what's on an oilfield truck. But remember The heavier the truck the less you can haul. I've lost out on more loads by being too heavy than being too light.

they never learn never use straps on lumber and steel use chain and dont forget the header board this driver is lucky he still has his head

@@Jehty_ yes chains could damage lumber so i used chaffing gear on the corners but never straps just cant get them tight enough you dont your cargo to hit you in the back of your head but that driver should have a head board to keep the load from moving

Looks like you would have liked a third spreader bar to keep the two cables separated - but I expect you only have two of them. Still looks like you did a heck of a job! I hope that the wood in the bottom layer wasn't too over-stressed.

Those were what we call LVL's ( Laminated Veneer Lumber) they are WAY stronger and heavier then regular wood. That is the main reason they held together. Great job.
@auto1910
@auto1910 Год назад
Their strength is not good in the plane they are loaded on the trailer. Strength is in the vertical position like a floor joint. Since they are laid flat it will be likely that some will be damaged from being lifted with one pair of slings.

Unless some straps broke. He didn't have enough securement. Also use cork mat on the deck and between each tier. 2 straps in 4ft front and rear no more than 10 ft apart thru the middle. If you could strap each tier 1:1 for weight. I use to haul trailer length steel gas pipe. Strap each tier to a 1:1. 50 ft joints on a 48 ' trailer.

you got to belly strap the shit out of those small wood stacks. I had one move around on me before. as for moving the load. why not just release all straps, then get behind the truck and choker the load with a strap, then just slowly slide it backwards on the trailer. this lifting etc seems like a real hard and dangerous way of doing it. I would bet the driver forgot to tighten those straps, that load moved a long way as one unit.
@SafeTrucking

Rotators are usually safer and stronger lifting from the side than the back when both options are available.
@pokerman9108
@pokerman9108 Год назад
@@lindasherman9921 it shouldn't take much to slide the load. Those small packs of wood like that slide rather easy. (hence why this happened) I've choker the back of loads like this and slide them back with another semi truck pulling the strap. works better than you would think. Also is really fast to do. However, it is hard to charge a couple grand to do it... if you ever get into this spot, something to think about anyway. have a good one.

I would never choke a load like this. Compressing it together with the strength of my rotator would be catastrophic. Dual spreader bars is the way to go. I mean you can clearly see by this video it wasn’t that difficult or heavy the way I angled it. 1,000 ways to skin a cat

Is that a big fix for Big Flipper? Been having to walk to work again this winter. I swear I am going to trade this little Jeep in. Just cannot figure out why the batteries will not hold a charge. I replaced so much electrical last summer, and now I seriously am considering replacing the main computer. I see your wearing a heavy jacket. Up here in Northern Minnesota we just came out of a big blizzard and temps below zero. I still have not taken my winter coat out yet. Just wearing my usual hoodie and vest. And even though it is light enough I still can't stand it. Hate being bundled up for winter. I feel I cannot move freely when dressed so warm. 😆

I don't know if you watch other people's videos but here is a link to a guy who has a rotator truck based in Scott City, MO. It is affectionately known as Tator. It cost him 3/4 of a million dollars but he can do all kinds of stuff with it. I've followed him for about 5 years. His company is called Midwest Truck and it's a family owned company. www.youtube.com/@RonPratt
