Today, I show the process of installing a Gotoh GE1996T Floyd Rose into a Jackson Soloist SLX. It's a pretty straight forward installation, contrary to popular belief. #ernieballstrings #guitarmods #restoration #floydrose #jacksonguitars #luthier #emg #gotoh

I did the same thing to a Gibson M-III 2013 reissue that came with the FR 1000 Korean tremolo. I really recommend using the front studs that come with the Gotoh, even if that means opening up the holes a little on a drill press. Reason being is now the tremolo sits up high on the guitar. It works fine and stays in tune, but I wish it sat lower in the cavity. If I had to do it over again I would have went with an OFR. I may still do that at some point seeing how it still has the FR mounts.

Perhaps I missed something ur why did you replace some of the Guyker parts with guyker stainless steel? I thought Gotoh 1996T was already great?

Make sure you install the correct post. That gotoh is made of a harder material and it can eat through that post, which can cause tuning issues down the line

I've personally never had those issues with FR Special/1000 posts. I only really change them out of they're corroded or rusty.

You needed the gotoh with the 33mm block.

Yea I already had a feeling that it wasn't going to fit 100% because of the taller block, but the bridge only cost like $115 on Amazon. I figured worse case scenario I'll just cough up another $20-$30 for a shorter block and call it a day lol

@@KyleDaSloth that’s a good deal. They usually run about $150.

Thanks for sharing this vid. Good stuff in here. I've been considering the Gotoh on my Ibanez RG. I'm just afraid of drilling for the new studs. I hear any of the floyd studs aren't the proper design for the radius edge on the gotoh. Plus I'm worried how the gotoh will sit in my recess/cavity. I don't want to cut into my guitar at all. Oh and the length of the trem post base is much longer, I think it will hit inside the cavity. Wish someone had a loose one I could just test fit before purchasing. Thx again for sharing your experience! 🍻

@@mygt8a4re thank you for the kind words, it means a lot to me! If it helps, I have a 1998 MiJ Ibanez RG520QS and it currently has a Floyd Rose 1000 installed. It fits right in and works as it should, but the Ibanez fretboard radius is ever so slightly flatter than the FR1000. Weirdly enough, the Gotoh has an ever so slightly flatter radius than the Jackson's fretboard. Theoretically, the Gotoh should fit perfectly 100% in an Ibanez RG (both size and radius), but it definitely depends on where the Ibanez was made, because the Japanese models have different bridge and neck measurements than the Korean/Indonesian/Chinese models. If I were you, I'd look up the Gotoh's measurements and compare them to your own guitar's measurements before buying the bridge to make sure it'll fit. I hope this helps!

@KyleDaSloth I really appreciate this insight, seriously priceless. I do have the tools to check my current radius. I would have gone blindly into a trem purchase without considering this. I appreciate this!

You might be able to fabricate a back plate that will work for it look for a craft shop that sells moldable plastic sheets and a heat gun paint stripper make the mold a tiny bit smaller like fractions of a inch then make your plate

That's honestly not a bad idea, but ever since I felt the protruding tone block rub against my shirt while using the bar, I definitely decided that it would be best to just get a 32mm big brass block. I just haven't ordered one and installed it lol I plan on making another update video soon because I have some things planned for this Soloist and my silverburst Soloist too.

When you install the trem springs, you're supposed to install them so they are parallel with each other, not splayed-out like you have them in the video, reason for that is so that each spring can contribute equal-tension, if you install them splayed-out the two outer springs contribute more tension than the middle one, this is especially important with Floyds and vintage style trems that don't lock the springs in place, because the middle spring isn't contributing the same tension as the other two springs, it will have a tendency to fall-out when doing pull-ups, I never really understood why people like to install the springs splayed-out, maybe I'm missing something here....
@KyleDaSloth

That's personal preference. Thousands of guitarists do it that way for their own reasons. My reasons are it's the tension that I'm used to and it's easier to remove the springs if need be.

Floyd Rose special isn't that bad I know you here a lot of people online saying they are so much worse than a regular Floyd Rose but that's simply not true. Floyd Rose is a good product whether it's a Floyd 1000, special, or a original if it's got Floyd Rose stamped on it and its a real one it's good.
@KyleDaSloth

I agree. As long as it's not completely made out of pot metal, what makes or breaks a Floyd Rose is how it's set up. The special that was in the Soloist did actually stay in tune, it just had a bunch of corrosion and pitting, so I figured why not swap it. Plus, I been wanting to try the Gotoh bridge.
@Rstar63

I took the special off my Adrian Smith Jackson and put a real Floyd on it, I'll end up doing upgrades on the special as a project. Should be interesting

@@Rstar63 the special isn't that bad it stays in tune well it's just made from cast iron which affects the sustain a little but it at least keeps it in tune and can handle divebombs.

@patrickshannon4516 I agree with you. I just wanted to mod the guitar to what I want. And always wanted to mod out a Special, when done, I'm going to install it on a guitar I'm building soon.
@KyleDaSloth

@@Rstar63 There's nothing wrong with modding a special. It's actually a good alternative to buying a $200 OFR. I fully modded the special that I put in my red Dinky mutt that's in one of my other videos. It works perfectly, honestly.

I already had a feeling it was going to stick out, but I figured I'd just swap out the block if need be, because the bridge only cost me like $115. Another $25-$30 for an OFR brass block wouldn't hurt lol
