Nice to hear that you like Turner’s gouache. I’ve found it to be excellent quality and so cheap. In US, it’s available at Jerry’s Artarama. It sometimes goes on sale for $4.50 a tube! And those a big tubes. They have a great large range of colors too. Love the Light Blue and the Havana Red, Night Blue and so many more.

You know, my favourite thing about your videos, is just the very basic joy of watching someone enjoy an area that I love. North-East Scotland is such a peaceful area. The hills and forest we have bring me such joy. It's really nice to see it in paintings :)

PS. 🎉 I just found the Turner starter set in 🇩🇪 at Peter's Art online. 5x whopping 25ml tubes for €19.80. Idividual 25ml tubes fo €5.49. quite a decent deal (W&N are 6.5 € for 14ml). Only 5€ shipping. I will give these a try! Thanks again Sarah!

Thanks for this thorough review, Sarah!💛I love hearing your thoughts and insights. I love love love Turner designer gouache, surprisingly it's the most affordable option here in Canada! I find they do tend to have more binder separation than my other brands, but I give the tubes a shake and a little massage and the paint comes out lovely 😊

This review makes me feel SO much better!! I’m in Canada, my local art store primarily carries Maimeri gouache (they have about 4-5 colours of W&N and have recently started carrying Daniel Smith, but it’s very expensive). Anyway, I thought I was doing something wrong because I had such a hard time getting the colour mixes I wanted with Maimeri or generally just using it. I don’t have enough experience with gouache to be able to determine if it’s a “brand” issue or a “me” issue. I think Maimeri watercolour is okay-ish, so thought I must be doing something wrong with the gouache (still a possibility since I don’t know how to work around its limitations).
@SarahBurnsStudio
@SarahBurnsStudio 7 месяцев назад
That is always my concern, that someone without experience will assume it's their own fault that they are struggling so much. When in reality a lot of the struggle can come from the supplies. Of course, there's a requirement for practice no matter what you are using, but it's nice when the materials aren't fighting you! 😂 From what I've seen, some people LOVE Maimeri and others hate it. Just find a gouache the suits *your* style

hullo Sarah, I will need to look again but I am looking for a DaVinci Paints of California gouache review. I know they are not widely available and not in the EU at all right now. Yet you have spoken of going to the states to visit, so you might know of them. I have watched a couple of videos but they are not well regarded. I LOVE the watercolors DaVinci makes and I have used their white gouache in some watercolor paintings, a newer experience for me, if I am honest! Have you considered trying them? Ok off to see what other brands you have done....

Dang that's too bad about Maimeri, as it's the most accessible "artist grade" gouache to me, being Italian. But the difference in vibrancy is apparent even on camera, compared to Holbein. Although I didn't have a bad experience regarding fluidity, but I've mostly done small portraits so far, and all with a Zorn palette, and even though I like the results my experience is limited

Great to see the Turner Design Gouache review. I got a set of 12 from Jerry’s here in the US because it was on an amazing “Super Sale” price around Christmas, but I haven’t played around with them much. I’m going kind of backwards with my gouache purchases, starting with the expensive artist quality gouaches and now buying some cheaper but popular ones. Have you tried the Turner acrylic gouache? I bought that before the Design gouache and loved it and kept buying more and more open stock. I found it “frustrating” in a way, though, because it is absolutely creamy and handles like regular gouache and I would forget that I was using an acrylic product until it dried fixed. I don’t think the Design gouache is quite as creamy (in my experience) but is nice.

It seems like there are so many crazy products on the market these days ..and you just don’t know what’s good and what’s bad until you spend the money to try it. Holbein is way too expensive for me to afford. However, the Turner is more affordable. I have ordered Turner and hopefully, I’ll step into the gouache painting arena with a little more confidence. I put a wax medium over my gouache paintings to make them glossy after I am done with them. Gouache also reactivates with water so you can use them like water color. Sara does lots of plein air paintings with gouache.

You can varnish gouache. I think even Maimeri makes gloss varnish for gouache. But I've seen people use all sorts of varnish for it. I think it's important to start with a few coats of spray varnish to 'set' the gouache before brushing varnish over it

Very hard to find Gouache brands in Australia. I think I know of 7, 4 of which you have reviewed. Daniel Smith, Winsor and Newton, Daler Rowney and Holbein. I personally have tried Art Spectrum, but found it really stringy. Sennellier, which I liked, but I couldn’t get local. I also found some of the colours less vibrant when compared to Winsor and Newton, but it was a great gouache to start on; very user friendly. My daughter now has my old set, is using them in her high school senior year and loves them. In the end I settled on Winsor and Newton, because it is easier to get, dries well in the palette and is vibrant. It is more expensive than AS, Sennellier, Mont Marte. About the same price as Holbein, but less expensive than others. Daniel and Smith and Daler Rowney are super expensive here, I just can’t afford to try them. I do wish I had more colour choices with Winsor and Newton, but I have enough to get a decent painting. I appreciate looking at your reviews, it is very generous of you. I often go back and look at them again. As an aside: what I like about Winsor and Newton gouache is something that you said when using Turner gouache is that I forget that I am using it, I just get lost in the process of painting and my mind isn’t even thinking about the medium. I love that about a good quality paint, when the medium just works so well you don’t even think about it.

Very odd Maimeri Gouache review, it seems like the gouache never really stood a chance against your bias towards it. Other reviewers are saying the opposite about it. It doesn't use dextrine or other cheap materials, that's pretty clear from their website. Can't say if it's good or bad yet, but it's on its way based on the high praises of some other excellent reviewers. I'm sorry to say this, but I've got this feeling with some of the other reviews you've done as well as this one.... some materials don't seem to get a fair chance at all.
@letym2271
@letym2271 5 месяцев назад
People have different standards and once you've tried good materials it's inevitable you will see the the differences and what other materials lack. You can clearly see on the screen the pastely and chalky colors, as well as the extreme transparency uneven texture of the yellow. 😅 As for the reds, it's a weird choice of a "magenta" that loses it's vibrancy when it dries to set as a primary red. 🤔 It dries as a pastel pink.
@benjamina6915
@benjamina6915 5 месяцев назад
@@letym2271 I bought a starter set with that according to weird magenta in it and it for sure doesn't dry pastel pink at all. Whatever she's doing with them, I don't know, but I get way better results with them. I've got Holbein Artist Gouache, Sennelier Extra Fine, Royal Talens Extra Fine, Master Class and of course Winsor & Designer. All good materials Last week the Maimeri Gouache test set arrived. In the past I had Arteza and Art Philosophy, the cheaper stuff. Since I love gouache, I want to pick a brand to build a larger collection with. After doing some paintings with all of the sets, I'm down to choosing between 3 sets. Holbein Artist Gouache, Sennelier Extra Fine and yes, Maimeri Extra Fine. They're all very pigmented, cover well, mix good and work great when diluted a lot and a little. Both is important for me. Maimeri definitely deserves a spot in the good stuff, since it's really nothing like she describes. After trying them, it confirms that the other reviewers, who aren't biased, were correct in stating it's a top brand.
@benjamina6915
@benjamina6915 5 месяцев назад
@@letym2271 Tried good materials? Of course I have. I started out with the cheap stuff, Arteza and Art Philosophy to see if I would like gouache at all. Was sold right away. Upgraded to Royal Talens Extra Fine and Winsor Newton Designer. Nice stuff, great for designers, not for artists. So I bought some Sennelier Artist Extra Fine. Now that's the good stuff. A teacher recommended trying Master Class gouache by Nevskaya Palitra. Interesting stuff too, I've been painting for the last three months with it. Since I like to compare brands I got some Holbein Artist Gouache and last week Maimeri Extra Fine arrived. The Maimeri Extra Fine isn't anything like Sarah describes. The magenta doesn't dry as pastel pink at all. The yellow dried nice and even. No chalky colors at all. They can dry very flat, but also good for textured work and nuances. After trying them myself and seeing the other positive reviews, I'm even more convinced she didn't give them a fair chance and is quite biased. The paint is super pigmented and uses premium gum arabic. Good thickness, very consistent, works great watered down a lot and with little water. I want to settle on one brand and build a collection with it. I've got 3 brands left to choose from... Holbein Artist Gouache, Sennelier Extra Fine and yes, Maimeri Extra Fine. Not sure with I'm going to pick, I'm leaning towards Holbein and Maimeri, but I want to make a few more paintings with each of them first. Having said that and since you mention good materials, there's one brand that I still need to test.... Lascaux. That's the really good stuff. Reviews are very hard to find, but they don't need reviews. It's a brand that's being used for restoration of museum art. They've got some interesting things in their collection. Once those are in and tested, I'll make my final choice.

I think you would be disappointed by Maimeri overall, but their phthalo turquoise (PB 15:4) is gorgeous. Also, their tubes are only 12ml, so you get less product for the price. If you want bang for your buck, try Michael Harding. The pigment load is amazing and they dry nicely in pans. StiviWonders does beautiful videos comparing various colors across brands and most of those have a Michael Harding version.

thank you so much for these reviews! Have you tried DaVinci Gouache? I didn't see it in your database, and have been curious about it.

Hi, DaVinci makes my very favorite watercolor paint. But I find some of their gouache to be way too transparent. Particularly the color Hansa Light and Sap Green. The yellow is sticky and I just can’t use it even though I bought a huge tube. I love the Aliz Crimson and the Blues though
