My name is Sarah and I make a living painting landscapes, making videos, and teaching others how to draw and paint. I live in Scotland but grew up in America. My videos range from painting tutorials, to art business advice, to fun nature adventures. I love sharing the beauty of Scotland!
I love these type of videos you do, taking us to your group plein air meetings, seeing the different locations (beautiful) and how the others are set up and their "takes" of the views. I am all set up now for painting outside but just at that awkward stage of getting started, feeling comfortable with it, finding the groove, etc. Sarah, you are so inspiring! Thank you!
I'm wanting more Phil in the videos. What did the good lady say????!!!!! Summer in Scotland is a bit like summer in Tassie; a mixed bag...😂. I loved watching you make those scratchy marks on the tree at the end, perfect.
Back again, at the end of the video. Incredibly helpful video! A lot of videos I watch, I am left with the sense that the video maker is having to focus on commercial interest/capacity to earn from sponsorship and free supplies, and the advice leans towards disingenuous and marketing. This was such a genuine, self-aware ('this is what I like because I work like this, if you do too you might'), and helpful/practical list of supplies, with deep insights into different supplies performance pros and cons depending on your particular use and preferences, which makes it so easy to understand what will be worth looking into myself. Best art video I've watched in months. Thanks heaps. You have a new subscriber! ❤
I'm really glad it's helpful! That's a big reason I don't do sponsorships, and if I accept any art supplies to try I tell the company I will be completely honest even if I don't like it. I think we need more artists telling it like it is!
I live on southern Vancouver Island in Canada. I think you would love painting here! Our coastline is heavily forested (as I believe Scotland once was?) and the rock formations and moss- and lichen-scapes are so beautiful and interesting, much like those in your videos. My city has more mossy oak trees than you could ever paint! I end up with a phone full of pictures of rocks and tree bark. If you're ever looking for a destination painting trip, look us up! 😊
I feel like this is the first Tips video I've seen in a long time that has numerous, completely new-to-me tips- thank you so much. I especially appreciated the water storage options that separate out groups of colours. Will definitely be using that. Thanks so much for sharing
Lovely and relaxing video. I learned a lot just from watching. Easier for me to pick up techniques and ideas just observing you then it is to actually have someone tell me what they’re doing. So this was a perfect video for me.
Hullo Sarah, I have seen an occasional video of yours listed on the right of my RU-vid screen, yet I follow so many Artists I am rather stingy on adding any more! I have subscribed to your channel after watching your interview with Lindsay and I am so sorry that I did not subscribe sooner! I have been infatuated with Scotland for years now and I have visiting there on my bucket list too! I used to create elaborate color charts quite similar to the ones you show in this video. I wish I could say that I have outgrown them, but they are great ways to keep mixtures in the front of your mind and it is a wonderful way to practice with your watercolors! My problem? Time! You get to a point where you must temper your time on inspiration and practice with time creating your artwork! I believe that we never stop learning. You simply have to weigh learning experience with creating your art. I am still trying to do both! I am glad that I am subscribed and I look forward to seeing Scotland through your eyes and Art!
Hi Sarah. .loved seeing another great video of Scotlands coast it’s so nice hearing the sounds of sea, love your videos but rocks and trees are. Also my favourite and boats I am originally from Hamburg long ago living in Ontario Canada via England. Enjoy everything you do 😂😂😂Ursula I’m trying to get back into painting used to do some oil painting thought I’d try watercolours,it’s a slow process baby steps 0:15
I’ve been following you for quite a while, and absolutely love your work. Your videos are informative and fun. What is that palette that you are using when you painted the ‘relaxing tree’? It’s different from the Portable Painter.
I live on the west coast of Scotland 🏴 we have a small harbour and so many places to paint this inspired me so much ! I would absolutely love to see all the beautiful coastlines we have here . Honestly our country is such a magical place when you take the time to go see places . Thanks for another great vlog ! Always learn something here ❤
I am planning on getting a u.go pochade box and would love to see in more detail how you set it up for plein 😊 air painting. Any tips, tricks are appreciated.😊
As usual, an excellent video! I just wanted to say Sarah that I love the brushes that I’m getting in the kits every month. I tried gouache once back in about 1991 and hated it. I didn’t realize it was because of the brushes. It’s so much more fun now. thank you for the wonderful brushes and wonderful kits to work with. Have a lovely week.☮️❤️🙏
Hi Sarah, I really enjoyed this video! I am interested in the watercolor palette used in the last tree painting. Is there a way to purchase one? I like the deep mixing wells. Thanks again for all you do. Kathy
You are so inspiring. I recently moved to the east coast of Vancouver Island, boats forest ocean. we got it, and I keep watching you out and about. I gotta get out plein aire more . It really is a fabulous experience. The sounds smells breezes.... thank you for what you bring us. 😊
You inspire me to get out more for plein air painting. Can I ask what colors (paints) you used for the tree in the end? They look so beautifully granulating. Thanks!
Hi Sarah. Jim from Madrid, Spain (a fellow artist and a New Yorker expat living abroad). It's been a while since I posted in your YT channel due to some health issues, but I always watch your vids, they are extremely inspiring. So much so that I used to only paint in Watercolor on "Plein Air" but you've inspired me to also use my Gouache and, even though it's different and requires somewhat of a learning curve, it's a wonderful medium for plain air and urban sketching. Due to my work life, I've traveled extensively throughout the World for over 25 years (most of Western Europe, including the UK, and a bit of Eastern Europe, some countries in North Africa and Dubai, Latin America, and the US and Canada), but I've never been to Scotland nor Ireland, which are both in my bucket list, as well as Asia and Australia, though I'm not sure I'll ever be able to visit them anymore. So, your videos take me there in a way and doing what I most love... Art & Photography. So... Thank you very much! Your vids take me there virtually and I enjoy them very much! Hope the best for you and help me keep on discovering! Cheers from Sunny Spain! 😁👍😎✌
Thank you Sarah! I love these beautiful paintings, I am still learning to paint mainly watercolour. I do have some gouache but haven’t used it very much. I love your second rock painting, colours are beautiful. In my sketchbook I have a beach scene with rocks underway in watercolour, I think I will try a second one in gouache. I live close to the beach in Sunshine Coast Queensland Australia. Thank you again, so incredibly inspiring!
