In this two-part video, we will be covering the different types of gouge samples for all types of soils and depths. In Part 1, Alex reviews some of our smaller gouge augering kits. These gouges kits are for soil research up to a depth of over 16 feet (5 m). For soil sampling both above and below the groundwater table, as well as archaeological and environmental soil research.
The cutting, operational part of our gouges varies in length in these kits. The most suitable length depends on the penetration resistance, the substance of the soil and the required boring depth. The longer the operational part the more vulnerable the auger is to torsion. (Diameter options are explored more in Part 2 coming tomorrow.)
Benefits:
• Non-toxic high tensile strength steel
• Light, portable kits for soft and hard soils
• Backpack kits with an Edelman auger for deeper depths
• Perfect for rapid soil profiling
• Push, twist, pull; that’s it!
Applications:
Because of the minimal disturbance of the sample, the gouge auger is frequently applied in profile research for:
• Soil mapping
• Soil suitability reviews
• Educational purposes
• Root research
• Soil sampling for fertilization research
• Clay distribution research
• Paleontological research
