Government's new fuel efficiency standards 'impossible’

Nationals Senator Bridget McKenzie says the Albanese government is promising more than it can deliver with its new fuel efficiency standards.
From next year new cars sold in Australia will be subject to tough emissions standards with the government's aim to drive down emissions and accelerate the uptake of electric vehicles.
The rules will impose a cap on the total emissions that can be produced by any one manufacturer's fleet of cars.
Manufacturers will need to reduce the total emissions of their fleet by more than 60 per cent by 2030.
"I think there are some serious questions about how you can drive down emissions by 60 per cent in six years," Ms McKenzie told Sky News Australia.
"This policy is asking Australians to change fundamentally who they are and how they think about their relationship with their car.
"I want to see cleaner cars, absolutely, but I want them to still be affordable and Australians to buy the cars they want and right now, the government's saying we can do all three at the same time.
"It can't, it's actually impossible to get the emission profile they want over the next six years, make sure we've got affordable cars in the types of models we drive here in Australia."

The government won't force you to buy an EV. They will simply introduce more and more regulations like these new fuel efficiency standards to the point that you can no longer drive your existing ICE vehicle thus giving you a 'choice' to buy an EV. And if you don't want to make the 'choice' to buy an EV then you don't have a vehicle at all. See how they're not forcing you? It's a free choice. Just like a recent event where if you didn't make a certain 'choice' then you were out of a job.

In Australia over 600 thousand caravans are registered, everything from a small camper trailer to full size caravan and if 2 persons own these caravans, that adds up to 1.2 million people add all the tradies and ofroad 4x4 people that adds up to a lot of people power. We need to somehow tell Mr Bowen and Labor Greens government that we can make up our own minds which car we think is right for us. After steam, in the 1940s came diesel electric locomotives. The Toyota Prius was produced starting in 1997 as a gas hybrid. Edison Motors has now built a hybrid logging truck. All 3 of these technologies that have worked for years have had little to no change in the infrastructure because they are all based on existing technologies. But now we run off and want batteries to do the whole job without a backup plan. And that precivilization is a dead end. E VS without infrastructure are basically junk. The whole world is pushing EVS, and now we see that EVS are Catching Fire "literally." So we have a fire hazard and an infrastructure problem, Plus EV sales are dropping like a proverbial rock. When will all of these super smart multinational billionaire corporations Going to figure out that batteries explode and prius,s Get thirty five percent better fuel economy and run forever. Sometimes I think the people who are in the positions to do things aren't good enough to clean my toilet.

The threat of EV fires is a media beatup. ICE's are a much greater risk. From the EV Firesafe website, set up to advise emergency workers on EV fires: "Too often, misinformation & misconceptions are driving news & online media coverage about EV traction battery fires. Through the course of this project, we've found that the poorly informed FUD (fear, uncertainty, doubt) factor is causing some unnecessary apprehension in Australia's firefighting & automotive community."

Does Albanese think he can fine a NON Australian company? The Car industry deserted Australia years ago. Vehicles are sold through distributors. Manufactures will simply sell what ever they sell in the EU and up the price to Australia claiming compliance costs. If Albanese tries to push them around they will simply show him the middle finger and not export to Australia. Australia is simply not a big enough market to worry about for the majority of manufactures.

And a lot of these EVs has limitations especially if used by tradies which most do carry capacity means reduced range then add trailers that reduces it even more so they spend more time charging than on the job or reduces the amount of jobs they can attend to. And you think that won't impact prices to the consumer especially when they talk about productivity. On top of all that how many people live in houses with off street parking councils already cracking down on extension cords the rest in units good luck with that. But as others it is force by stealth with emissions standards, then clean air tax or Ultra Low Emissions Zones (ULEZ) like in the UK.

Otherwise, the EV will need a recovery vehicle to come collect it. Let's hope you are not in a phone blackspot or you could be sitting in the sun for a long time. When you do get to a town, best of luck finding a special EV tyre which will cost more than double a regular tyre. Australia does not have an electricity grid that will support a 50% EV ownership. A lot of people say it can, but they are relying on data from today. The electricity usage in Australia is growing year on year, but the infrastructure is not even keeping up with demands on hot days. People have had their AC turned down by the suppliers to stop the grid crashing in some areas at times. EV owners are always complaining that they can't find charging stations that work in rural areas. I suppose at least the diesel powered tow truck owners are making a profit out of this debacle. An equivalent EV SUV will have a battery capacity of between 60 to 120 kilowatts depending on the size and type of vehicle. If you were to charge (supercharge) 10 EVs with 120 kilowatt batteries at the same time, that is 1.2 megawatts, enough power for 80 homes daily use. The big question is? Wind and solar will not be enough to charge masses amounts of these vehicles. Then there is the disposal of thees Lithium ion batteries once their use by date has expired, and who would buy a secondhand EV if you have to pay $30,000 dollars upward for replacement batteries.

Dumping ground my rs. When Australia took pride in itself and manufactured cars here, we were the second country in the world, after the USA, to adopt emission standards. This was brought in on January 1, 1968 - Positive crankcase ventilation (PCV). When I started work on Mercedes-Benz products in 1978, only 4 countries -USA, Australia, Sweden and Japan had ANY tailpipe emission standards. Germany didn't have them until 1991! It takes about 10 years for a vehicle to hit the market, from idea, through design concept and marketing to prototypes and release. US standards are not being achieved. Ford has stopped production of its EV pick-ups and like here, they have no infrastructure. BTW, why do most EVs run without a radiator grill? They still have a radiator and liquid cooling system for the battery packs. It seems like another potential cause of thermal run-away, which would be a bushfire hazard in rural Australia.

The issue is not fuel! Its emissions EVs are no replacement for diesel or petrol.

We do not have the infrastructurer in place to handle the charging, many people do not live in domestic situations that enable charging to be practical e.g, Flats Apartment buildings etc, Insurance companies are more likely to write off an EV following a crash as there is a worry about a battery fire in a situation where the fire could spread, panel beaters don't want them inside their shops because a damaged EV can be a time bomb if a damaged cell fires up. A fire in a tunnel following an EV crash could kill many people because the temperature of an EV battery fire is many times worse than a petrol fire and in the close proximity with the other vehicle involved you could have the Luton car park fire in the tunnel packed with people trapped in their cars. Also, the amount of energy and polution the comes from the mining of the necessary ingredients is enormous. The authorities in Melbourne have forbidden the EV cement mixer trucks from using the tunnels probably? because of the truck that self immolated recently. Some people have resorted torunning extension cords accross a footpath to charge in the street, now there is a Lawyers picnic if someone gets electrocuted.

This is just another way of pushing electric vehicles - so that we won't have petrol / diesel version that can access the outback - meaning we'll all be confined to the cities.

This is a load of bull-.... higher prices for the cheap cars so inefficient EVs will look cheaper. The ministers are really lying through their other mouth and spreading up to 10 hectares. To say it will bring in 1000extra in petrol savings, it will take 40 years to break even.

Yes the US likes the big trucks but a Dodge 1500 there starts at $40,000 and here that $90,000, Vehicles in this country were already stupidly expensive and this will just make them much worse

The way it works in the US is, if your vehicle has a large foot print you don't have to have a efficient vehicle, that's why they push huge vehicles. Small trucks can't match the efficiency required for there small foot print, so you cant buy a small truck. This is how bureaucracy works. Long live the monster truck.
