My parents survived WWII in Holland. My dad was arrested as a nineteen year old Dutch citizen and was forced into a German concentration work camp for three years and survived. We all immigrated to the United States in 1953 through Ellis Island. My mom said that most people cried for joy when our Dutch ship passed the Statue of Liberty! We all became American citizens and displayed the American flag proudly. I served in the Marines and Army and worked as a civil servant for the Air Force in Space and Missile Command. I served this great country of ours for 35 years. I love this country and am 69 years old now and would fight and die for her if asked! It's time that all Americans work together and start to love and respect one another!

The first time walking into a waiting room of a VA hospital pharmacy after separating, it wasn't like going to a civilian medical center. It felt strange. I looked around and saw a bunch of older gentlemen, most wearing Vietnam War hats, one was a WWII veteran in a wheelchair. Although these men were older, far past their prime, and I was easily the youngest individual in there.. I could never even begin to fathom what experiences, horrors, pain, and (hopefully) recovery these men had to endure. It's strange. To me, I look at my previous experiences in the military as "just a job", because that's all it was. But these gentlemen who went in decades before me are like heroes to me, but I'd be willing to bet that they'd say that their time in service was also "just their job".
Yes, I'm a disabled vet. I see service dogs to help PTSD soldiers. I see combat gear and I see what violence does to a body. As a German, 2nd generation after WW2, I too went through what we call "processing the past". It was painful, but necessary, so that history would never repeat itself. I had a granddad who was in the war, but never talked much about what happened there. Me and my mum suspected that he also took part in the raiding of Greek villages. Fortunately he was not violent towards his wife or children, but he was obviously deeply mentally disturbed by what he experienced during the war. The state of the US today reminds me actually more of 1933, the "Reichstagsbrand", which was the fire of the parliament building and the seizure of power by the Nazis shortly after that. My half great uncle was a card carrying member of the Nazi Party and helped to organise Krisstalnacht in part of Berlin . A shameful stain on our family history . I think Trump's worst sin is that he promotes division within the country instead of unity. There will always be division within a country, but the role of a leader is to bring people together and to respect people's differences, not to drive people apart. A good leader is a peacemaker, not a war maker. The root of the problem is Trump's active encouragement of division within the U.S.A. The rest of the problems he has caused are mostly symptoms of that. As Arnold says, "we need to look past ourselves, our parties, and disagreements and put our democracy first." Democracy is about evolution, not revolution.

It amazes me that grown, intelligent, educated men can be so blind to the truth. I can accept the truth regardless of where it lands. Some people won't. My father would at times hint at similar experiences he suffered during the War in Europe. He would also drink to forget. He was a good father and raised a family of six children. He died young. Thanks for your father's service. Many brave Canadian soldiers helped liberate my country. I heard many stories how when my father was 8 years old, his parents lodged two Canadian soldiers in their own house in 1945. After 5 years of occupation they had very little left, but did everything they could to thank their liberators.

That is just one. Going to war as an 18 or 19 year old and seeing your friends and brothers die will scar a person deeply. Coming back to a country that hates you, full of soft, entitled people would also wound. Not having any of the promised benefits for enlisting, of education or healthcare, after having your spine compressed carrying 80-plus pounds of gear on your back every day, or shrapnel from near misses, or concussions from IEDs and gunfire. Veterans are used up and discarded.
Not only did they lose the war, but most of the deaths were civilians. Imagine being a Iraq or Afghanistan Veteran. Yup. We lost both wars but now imagine 40% of everybody you know in your community is dead or dying and your country is now occupied by dozens of different countries Armies. You money turned to pennies on the 100 dollar bill.
