Salman: If you are using ArcGIS Online, any spreadsheet in decimal degrees will overlay automatically. If you are using ArcGIS Desktop, you need to make sure that you set the map projection to WGS 84 decimal degree for that same spreadsheet to overlay correctly. I hope that helps.
geographyuberalles well at the moment I have a shape file in GCS WGS 84, and I add that first so I the dataframe is also in that cordinate system and then I add the base map(which is also in WGS 84 I assume) but the points dont overlay at all. The shape file has points which were created using google map cordinates(which again is in WGS 84) in decimal degrees by locating them with the XY locator tool in ArcMap.
Salman Ahmed Salman sir - You are all OK except the base map. If you are in ArcGIS Desktop and start with the data, yes, you are right - this will set the data frame to WGS 84 GCS lat long. But your base map ... where is it from? If you are adding it from ArcGIS Online, then it is probably in Web Mercator, so that's why things are not overlaying.
geographyuberallesAh okay so my base map is in a different projection thanks. But just now I projected my data to Web Mercator and I don't see any change. The points are as incorrectly located as before.Here is my workflow-1. Created a point shape file with WGS 84 system2. Copied long lat for my location from Google maps3. Inputed this long lat into the 'Go to XY' tool (selected decimal degrees in units field)4. XY tool gave me a location which I digitized in my shape file.5. Added topographic base map from ArcGIS online to the data frame6. Added my shape file to the data frame(the point didn't overlay correctly)7. Projected the shape file to Web Mercator and added the newly created projected shape file to the data frame.8. Removed the previous shape file from the data frameNow the point in the new projected shape file is still incorrectly located as it was before the projection. No change at all.Could you please suggest what might be the problem still?
Salman Ahmed Strange... that should have worked. Here is another idea: FIRST add the ArcGIS online base map to your data frame so it is set to web mercator. THEN your other data should reproject on the fly. If that doesn't work, I'm sorry...you might have to use the Esri GeoNet forum or another forum and posing your question there because my expertise is not helping you very much, I regret to say.
