For those asking - of course the "stock" measurement was done after fixing the mounting fault. Otherwise we'd have no idea how much of the thermal improvement was due to de-shrouding versus the tighter mounting. The footage you see from 3:29 was when I first realized how bad the problem was - so I fixed it, installed the original shroud and fans, and re-tested it to give us the "stock" / before de-shrouding measurement.

Also one of the selling points for which I chose strix version of 2080Ti was that extra fan headers. But it's quite useless. It's 4 pin yet has DC control and no way to change it, so if you have RGB fans you get them turned off, also they have quite crappy control logic, by default it's something where it's off until temperature reaches 60*C and it goes right to 100% Theoretically you can change it in asus' GPU tweak software but it's garbage and it doesn't save profile on GPU, so if you restart the PC it goes away, even if you run the software on startup it still doesn't update those settings.

Honestly I would love that. I'm running a PowerColor Red Dragon 5700XT and to keep the thermals in check (below 80C TJunc in my preference) I have a very aggressive fan curve meaning during games my GPU fans regularly reach 1800-2100rpm and can spike up to 2400. Fortunately I can have my PC a decent distance away, about 4 feet (~120cm), so the noise isn't terrible.

Some adjustments to your video since I deshrouded my strix rx 5700xt myself: -Asus uses a strange 7 pin sort of fan splitting header. The mini 4 pin you mention is for the rgb on the shroud. I tried to figure out which wires I needed to make a 4 pin pwm signal for the fans, but the fans wouldn't spin. You have to use the Asus software, but that doesn't allow much of an undervolt. I settled on argus monitor and put the fans on the AIO pump header on the mobo. Perfect solution! - you HAVE to bend the tabs on the shroud and you have to bend them pretty far for certain fans in order to fit the fans and not get the tabs in the fan blades. Even if you do it carefully, you will damage the heatsink a bit and will probably void warranty if they need to take the shroud off.

Obviously because of case clearance issue. A graphics card with a 120mm fan would be too tall to fit inside most of the compact cases. If the graphics card used in this video came with a heat sink designed for 120mm fans, it would have never been able to fit inside this case. Any case that can't fit a 120mm CPU cooler won't be able to fit a graphics card with 120mm fans.
@hughjazz44

@@krazyfrog A triple slot GPU would already not fit in most compact cases, so your argument is mostly irrelevant. Having more flexibility in normal ATX and mATX cases would be better and cover most use cases.
@LiveType
@LiveType 3 года назад
Cost, manufacturing efficiency, and size constraints. But mostly cost. A half decent 120mm fan would likely cost 4-5x as much as they pay for those flimsy excuses for cooling fans. I mean I would gladly pay an extra ~$30-40 if a manufacturer actually adopted them but only time will tell. Why would they spend more on the fans when they can just slap a bigger heatsink on? My guess is the best you'll get is that it becomes easier to mount your own 120mm fans in the future. Example: Have you seen the fans inside of the Mac Pro? Those are some ludicrously expensive fans in classic over-engineered apple fashion. They're there because the user base won't even bat an eye at the ~$150-200 spent on fans.

@@t4iga121 if you're doing design work on thermal solutions for silicon components you most assuredly are a "fan expert," in the professional sense. Modeling Air flow through such a system is a pretty basic engineering task that any junior level mechanical engineering student could undertake. All this is to say that, yes, the only reason the thermals on your gpu are lackluster and the noise is too high is because the engineers working on them are operating within market parameters defined by what the consumer will put up with, not what provides the best absolute performance.
@lucastonoli3256
@lucastonoli3256 3 года назад
@@t4iga121 This mostly comes down to marketing. People demand fancy shrouds, lights and pretty shit, not going past the 3 slot height makes it more compatible with every case. Plus, if the thing still achieves the right FPS, they ensure the sale regardless of whether the cooling design is optimal or not. Ideal PC would have a horizontal layout to avoid piling up heat sources and major components would have tower-like heatsinks on top (pretty much like CPU cooling).

@antisniper70

Yes the exhaust fans blow down onto the table out of the case. The reason it’s cooler is because there is much more space to bring air from within the case than intaking from the small area under the case, this also takes out warm air from the case

Yeah I'd imagine it's because after 20min or so the small case is otherwise saturated with ambient heat from all the intakes. Having one of them as exhaust alleviates this; perhaps even lay the case on its side so it can exhaust the hot air unobstructed.

EVGA Black Edition is 2-slot card? Are you using different case, thicker fans or made shrouds for fans? Because otherwise you should have a gap bellow fans and M1 bottom -- fans don't blow all of the air outside of the case. Also even with shrouds/proper spacing it's reasonable to think that slim heatsinks work worse with exhaust -- as with such configuration fans pull air through the heatsink from it's sides (and there is less area from side profile).
@DClaville
@DClaville 3 года назад
where are you exhausting to ? sucking air from the heat sink will very rarely be better it only works in the case in the video where the fans can blow the air out the case directly. in a normal case and GPU placement you will want to have it blowing into the heat sinks. . i also thing the VRM temps where higher in the exhaust setup in the video but might not have been monitored in that part of the test.

I've got a deshrouded Gigabyte 2070 super in my H1 and it made a huge difference to noise/ thermals. I have two noctua NF-A12x15s attached; no issues with protruding brackets but you do have to get creative with zip ties to attach the fans. Felt very crude whilst I was building it but actually I think the end result looks better than stock. If reducing noise is in your interests I'd also recommend swapping the stock psu for an SF750 or similar - the stock psu isn't loud, but I found the stop start switching in and out of passive mode a little intrusive.
