I’ll be the test dummy, if anything it’ll roll to the side, they can’t roll forward or back cause the RHS runs parallel to the chassis, but yeah, won’t happen but I’ll post it if it does haha.
@@timmyhasheart was thinking about it and it could actually be beneficial to have a weak point in the tray like that...if you hit something hard enough to bend them you'd of probably broken something else anyway
They are right in what you have been told about those brackets rolling. The only strength is in the forward and backward motion. There is no strength for side loading and the 3mm wall will not provide much protection against sliding into anything. You also need to take into account the G forces when cornering if you have any load on the tray. Constant sideways movement back and forth will soften those mounts and they will eventually tear and break. Get a strip of 40 or 50mm wide( whatever the size of box section you have used) x4mm thick flat and weld it on 1 side of the box section mounts so they are not hollow and see through. You will still have access to the mounting bolts and it will provide strength for side loading. Remember... things always seem to break when you are using them, so I would hate to see you half way through a track and see your tray start to fall off. Do it now while you have easy access and remember to cover and protect your fuel tank from welding sparks.
Cheers dude, I’d cover the fuel tank if it was a petrol, but not worried about a diesel tank. As for the mounts, I’ve addressed it on other comments which I reckon you’ve probably read, it’s painted now and honestly I’m more interested now to see if they do bend, but I sought advice from fabricators I trust about it after I got a few comments, the general consensus was that patrol tray mounts crack and break away from the chassis, and it’s better that the blocks have a bit of give than those. And so if they start to give, I’ll address it, if the tray falls off in the bush, I’ll ratchet strap the c*nt and be on my way. 😂 Im all for learning, but it’s been measured, considered and we’re moving on 👌🏻
@timmyhasheart I work away on the mines for 4 weeks on and 1 off, so limited 😅 Oh, for the fact that I can't have an awning while im camping, basically have to camp on only sunny day/clear nights, sucks in NSW
Love it mate plan to do the same build on my 105. Any idea how much the tray weighs ? And in comparison to the weight of it as a wagon, would be interesting. Always wondered weight difference of a wagon with full bar work compared to a single cab with a tough tray.
Thanks mate glad you like it 🙏🏻🙏🏻 Yeah I wish I had weighed it before and after, all I know is with both boxes on the back, with tools and spares in one & camping gear in the other, the whole car weighs 2.5t without anyone in it.
I didn't really appreciate how good that colour is fully until this episode with the tray on etc but that Burgundy or whatever you chose looks class. Hopefully the Predator paint holds up I will keen to see how resilient it is vs Raptor and Bully Liners.
Yeah oath it’s definitely as good as texture paint can look, it’s amazing how much the sparkle comes through still compared to raptor but yeah, at the end of the day I am just glad it’s painted I needed it done, was doin my head in prepping it haha.
Looks good mate. What's you plans for the tray a dog box style canopy?. As far as mounts go I've seen full canopies mounted with more flimsy mounts than that. She'll be fine better to bend them then bend your chassis
Yeah I can’t see em bending haha, and if they do it’s a few nips with the grinder ain’t the end of the world! Na no canopy on this bus mate, she’s just a play car, the GU will get the touring setup 👌🏻
Yeah my engineer wanted it to exit at the rear and if I wanted to dump it out The side it had to be out the driver side, which is opposite to where they go from factory. Eventually I’ll dump it out the side up high, that’s what I did with my GU one it’s just gotta be there for the time being
not hating here but , real talk time mate , that box mount might work for front to rear forces , but wont be anywhere near strong enough to take a good hit from the side , you do need to brace it thats a given , and tbh the gauge steel wont be close to strong enough , boiler maker by trade so have background knowledge have fun though mate , and good luck
Cheers dude, I don’t see any of it as hate haha, I enjoy the input, but still just can’t see all 8 of them laying over however - if it does happen I’ll post about it so everyone can learn from it for sure. 🙏🏻
Na dude, got this far just fine without either haha, rear winch wouldn’t be a bad addition but never really needed one & as for the drawer, maybe if it was a tourer but it’s just a bush pig nowadays, GU is the tourer
Yeah mint haha, yeah had to do something. cape, Fraser and glassy did a number on the poor old wags, I didn’t put it on RU-vid but let’s just say I know the feeling of rusty roof repairs on GQs ;) she’s all clean now though. Ahaha yeah she was a darling but the GU will treat you right 🙏🏻
Hey man saw you had a GU steering wheel in the beast. Just wondering what it took to make it fit in the series 1 and is it sketch? Would love to know. Cheers.
Yeah mate D22 wheel, spline is the same bolts straight in, you have to do a bit of plastic tinkering to make the horn work though. All pretty obvious when you start tinkering 🙏🏻
Kinda basic and rough compared to that 105 series body lol. Just messin around Do you think you lost any weight doing the chop? Or still about the same?
Not quite a direct comparison, but I’ve got both an MK wagon at home, and Dad’s got an MK Ute with a steel tray (wooden floor), and my wagon weighs about 2.2 tonnes whereas the Ute weighs about 2.4, so there’s an extra 200kg in the tray somewhere. Maybe different on a custom built tray but I dunno, I can’t see thin wagon sheet metal weighing much.
I’ve definitely lost weight for the time being but it was also always constantly packed with all my tools, spares & camping gear so I’ll have to wait and see, I was thinking about this the other day I should have weighed it
Yeah mate absolutely, once the tray is finished I’ll chuck the sliders on and do front and rear brush bars, it might not be before tyler comes depending on time but it’ll happen for sure 👌🏻
You probably want to leave those mounts un braced as you have them now. If it takes a hard enough hit to bend them, better to have them give than to transfer the impact elsewhere.
Oh for sure but like.. it’s just who I am I don’t mind if I’m wrong ahaha I just don’t see it being an issue, the fella who bent up the headboard actually said exactly what you said, best they bend than anything else breaking 👌🏻
@@timmyhasheart Good stuff, I respect your approach. Just sick of small creators getting bogged down by armchair comments. Really looking forward to the "end" results and what you have planned next (budget permitting as always lol). Keep up the good work. Cheers.
@@timmyhasheart something to stop heavy objects coming through the rear window is a must. A mate is in a wheelchair after a compressor came through the rear wall of his ute. Yours is probably stronger but window is big.
The tray? Hmm I don’t actually know I bought it all in bits, maybe $1000 in steel and $500 in paint and grinding/welding supplies roughly? Certainly wouldn’t be over $1500
