My GQ has lived a long life so far with MANY different iterations of bullbars, bullbar hoops, rock sliders, brush bars & scrub rails. Ever since I chopped it I had to remove some of the key elements from my old rock sliders that made them stout & reliable. So now, I scored myself a Speedwerx Tube/Pipe Bender ready to completely overhaul the bar work on my car to protect it on the tough tracks. Learn how to bend & notch tube with both professional & simple tools.

It’s a good point you make at the end Timmy, the situations you’re talking about can be frustrating but perspective is definitely something to keep in mind when it’s not going as smooth as you’d hoped

Great video. Adding to what you said @ the end. I am using a donor GU rail in my build & many of the factory welds are rather "ordinary" & some are down right shite. & I have found the same issue with just about every mass manufactured chassis rail that was welded manually by a human. On production lines way back even the start of the industrial revolution speed was the focus & as mass manifacturing evolved it become more about speed. Welders & assemblers were pushed & squeezed for speed, something usually has to give when that is the case & usually it is quality that is the 1st thing to suffer. With my GU rail we are bracing & jigging it & fixing all the imperfections with the fit & welds, this rail had never been in an accident. Will do the same with the body, doing it in such away that everything will still flex & move enough, without cracking but will be stronger, in places where it was lacking. Also when I made rock sliders for my daily drive all the tube section where I needed a mirror copy I fabricated them @ the same time as well as taking notes. I found I am less likely to forget a detail in the process & tend to get a more mirror identical result. Notching by hand is like anything it takes practice to get them good & you really have to pay attention, some don't have the patience or knack for it. My 1st manually fabricated notches were shite. When you start wasting through the material you either chuck a tanty & give up or you decide to get better. With sliders that don't quite fit, ratchet straps ratchet straps & ratchet straps & sometimes oxy-acetylene if you have it! Just be careful you don't set your straps on fire! :0*
@timmyhasheart
@timmyhasheart 8 месяцев назад
Haha thanks heaps mate, and interesting info too, I have seen with most mass produced chassis a lot of the welds end early or are undercut, but yeah every time I have welded to the chassis for whatever mod etc it’s all been signed off by an engineer I don’t mess about with that crap, especially putting my car on the internet it just puts a target on your back 👍🏻👍🏻

@saezarscanlan840 6 месяцев назад
Hey mate How did you find doing those chassis plate mounts as opposed to a mount that clamps the chassis?
@timmyhasheart
@timmyhasheart 6 месяцев назад
Soooo.. I believe it’s easier to build sliders with these plates provided you follow a strict welding procedure, as in once they’re all mocked up with tacks you cut the whole lot back off the chassis, then weld out, then weld back to the chassis, and also because I have 1 mount above the radius arm, a clamp wouldn’t work because it would hit the radius while trying to slide down off the chassis. But with all that being said, I think a chassis clamp would be stronger in the long run because it’s grabbing the whole beam as opposed to just grabbing the outside wall. So there is a bit of a compromise either way just depends what you favour more. 🤙🏻🤙🏻
@saezarscanlan840
@saezarscanlan840 6 месяцев назад
@@timmyhasheart yeah rightio, my current sliders have a clamp mount and I’ll be re doing all my barwork/tray very soon Heard people say about weld on chassis mounts being stronger but in saying that it’ll be a first time experience my this sort of stuff and could go wrong Cheers mate👍
