Actually, Craig wanted the audience to create their own story. He said he wanted the audience to interpret it how they wanted so you were partially correct! “Almost Home” tells the story of an encounter with an older homeless man. The narrator finds him covered in blankets behind a dumpster on a cold, winter’s day, thinking he might be dead. As he nudges the homeless man, who is, in fact, alive, the man tells him about all of the activities he had been doing in his dream. The narrator offers to drive him to a shelter, but the man declines, saying, “Man I wish you’d just left me alone, ‘cause I was almost home”. Morgan leaves the song open-ended on purpose. He wants his audience to interpret it whatever way they want. The homeless man may be almost to Heaven, or “almost home” in his dreams. How do you interpret the song? Watch Morgan perform it at the Opry below.

My dad was dying of Cancer and talking in his sleep. I could tell he was dreaming a childhood memory. After he woke up, he smiled at me and said this “ they say when you die, your whole life passes before your eyes, and I believe that’s true”. That song got me good.

Damn, Country Music songwriters and Artists like Craig Morgan are the greatest story tellers. On a side note. I was backstage at the Grand Ole Opry with Craig Morgan in July of 2016 and took pictures with him and was going to post them on social media the next day but that was the day his son died. For the record, Craig Morgan is a former US Army Ranger and recently reenlisted in the Army National Guard. He is a world class human being with a heart of Gold.

That's so cool. I was at the Opry last year with my daughter for the first time (Her first time) and we went around all the places in Nashville that I went before she was born. All the places that inspired me to write the songs on my first album. What a thrill for her to see the places in person that were my inspiration. This is a great song!

For years, I sang this song for karaoke. Now, I won't even be able to listen to it in public, thanks to you. For me, the story was always, it's cold outside. The only way I can getvwarm is to dream about it. Never, not even once, did it cross my mind the old man was dying. Literally being called home. What a beautiful song. I listened to it again, and I was right, waterworks. Man I wish you just left me alone, I can't sing anymore, Almost Home. No. Thank you for your insight. It holds new meaning for me. I'll enjoy it now as I never have before. If it's best for him, I hope he made it home. Nite, all.

Craig wrote a song "Rain for the Roses", (my last name is Rose) and it depicts my life as a kid on the farm in Dixfield Maine, I met him at the CMA fest in Nashville a number of years ago, and we talked about that and bow hunting, and he automatically comes across as a kind and wonderful person. VIA his bus driver, Dewey, he signed and gave me an Alvarez acoustic, ( when I worked at Hunts Outdoors in Hendersonville Tennessee) that I played for years, I never met his son, but when he passed, I cried out of respect, as a friend, and as a father, can only imagine the loss. God Bless you Craig, I miss you on the charts brother, I am still playing at 80, and teaching, and have over 450 song lyrics written to date, that will probably never go anywhere, but it's all good, and it makes a great diary...:-)

I remember how this song made me feel years ago, when I was younger... now, it feels so much more relatable. When you've lost so many people you've loved your whole life, and nowhere feels like home anymore.. you come to know that "wanting to go home" takes on a whole new meaning. I wish I didn't know that kind of wanting, but I'm incredibly grateful to have had all the love that I miss so much now. It's kinda like a good hurt.. and a hopeful sadness you keep hidden from everyone for years. Weirdly, you end up confessing it to a bunch of strangers all over the world on youtube, and you feel a little bit of peace or relief, because somehow you just know there are others who feel the same way..

Its easily interpreted both ways. I've always believed it to be a dream because of the second verse. Close enough to see his daddy and smell the cobbler. He just wanted the dream to continue so he could go inside his home and be with his parents again. Besides, you really can't wake someone from dying. But then again that could be heaven to him. Regardless, I still cry everytime because it is so reminiscent of my childhood.

Well, I’m late to this one, but I just wanted to add my two cents. The old man was not dying or freezing to death. He was in a better place when he was asleep. in his dream he was home again, or almost back to his childhood home but at that moment, when the young man who had good intentions, woke him up. he brought him back to this miserable world. What he is saying here in the song is that his fondest happiest memories are of his childhood. Those were the happiest years of his life.

I believe that you are right about that. Morgan wrote part of the song after his wife told him that she wished he didn’t travel so much on tour. So it started off as “it’s temporary. I’m almost home”. He mentioned dreaming about being home when you’re not helps. Then he spotted a homeless man and tied that into the song. But saying all that to say this, he won’t give a definite answer because he loves the way people interpret a song differently. It’s the magic of a well written song.

Over the next week or so, I searched the Internet to figure out who the singer was and what the name of the song was. THIS is the song that got me into country music. 🥲 Whether he was merely dreaming or in the process of dying is left up to the listener. That, by design, is how Craig Morgan wrote the song. A sad, rock song, you two should listen to is Queen's "Only the Good Die Young". A tribute to Freddie Mercury by the three remaining Queen members. 😞 On the positive side, Alexis had her baby! Congratulations!

Absolutely a beautiful song. Craig and his international harvester out done himself on this one. Instant classic ♥️ great choice 👍👍
