Sunburst - $299, Black - $299, Olympic White - $349 -- and it's probably your fault since that's the one that you wanted 👉! Ooh - Swapping that to gold hardware would be gorgeous.
Definitely nothing to do with me! The vids only been up fopr 20mins 😂 The Black one is no longer on the Fender website though - So I reckon that's already discontinued 😬
Looking forward to seeing the mods.😎 My Baja Telecaster neck has gone from pale to more vintage amber due to sunlight exposure👍.......but I guess you don't get enough sun in Scotland.🤔😇
A crimson one with gently toasted neck and stainless steel fretwork. A propriety brand of humbackers that gives ceramic or alnico outputs balanced at volume and tone controls with circuitry to provide sweet gentle sounds at low volume output along with full jangly chords avoiding mish-mash. Ranging to an option that will do grunge as easy as setting volume pot to 8 or higher. On the white-cream one. Scratch the gold. It looks okay on a merc but tatty on a Ford Fiesta go for cream, pale mint or aged white pickups n trim, locking tuners natch and headstock color matched to body
ooooft! The Crimson one sounds awesome 😎👌 I'd love to go all brass for the hardware, but I think I'll struggle to find all matching colours of parts. Also the Trem I'm looking at comes in Gold&Black, unfortunately no brass options for that :(
If you like em and can find them for around £250 new - It's a total steal! On Ebay, people want between £250 and £300 for used 🙄 I could be wrong, but it certainly smells like they're gonna be discontinued. The Black one has already vanished from fender.com and there's a new version of the white one out 😬 Red one looks classy too! 😎👌
@@stevecassidyguitar believe me, I’m having the same issue with my project. Not really sure what pick ups I want to go with on it. Thanks for your content, I get to hear different types and make a solid choice!
Those are definitely on the list. I do have a set of Fender Fidelitrons, I've been dying to try out but... they're chrome! 😭 and if that's not 1st world problems - I don't know what is 🙈
Very Cool, Thankyou Steve. Wow, Stunning Guitar, definitely my favorite Starcaster colour scheme. Have never owned a Starcaster, that may need to change... All the Best, Cheers.
Cheers mate! 😀🙏 A lot of people seem to be digging this one. Since I gave the truss rod a wee turn and lowered the bridge it's been playing like a dream! I can't put it down 😀👍
Wasn't prepared for how good this guitar looks - I wasn't aware there was an affordable Starcaster with the proper headstock. Shame it'll be discontinued, as I've no plans to get a new guitar any time soon but I'd love to finally own a Starcaster. I'd probably Gretsch mine up.
Not confirmed it will be discontinued yet... but it certainly smells like it, the black one has vanished from the Fender website and with the new white affinity model out, it doesn't make much sense to have 2 models out in the same colour and with the same name but... different 😬 Luckily you see then regularly on the used makret, but a lot of people are asking new prices for used 👎
In the 80s (when I was at college) I first saw the seminal Guitar Handbook by Ralph Denyer. In That book I saw a history of Fender guitars including the short lived 60s model the Starcaster. Essentially a footnote in Fender history. Throughout the rest of the 80s, 90s & 2000s, it was a guitar that I thought I'd imagined as no bugger else seemed to have heard of them. Then... in the last few years , suddenly they're back in vogue. Just goes to show that if you hang around long enough you become trendy again. I'm on a mission to disprove that with my playing😁. Oh, and by the way... get used to making old man noises. They get more frequent as you "collect more birthdays" (my doctor's phrase). Cool looking guitar, apart from the headstock though... can't quite get past that... sorry
I know the book very well mate! That's where I first seen the Starcaster too. I used to borrow that book from the library regularly until I got my own copy. Still got it 😃👍 They only made the Starcaster for a few years - I think it was 76 - 82. Then that was it until 2013. Got a great story about that I'm still saving 😁 No need to apologise about the headstock tho mate 😂👍 it's definitely a marmite situation.
@@stevecassidyguitar I first saw a Starcaster in a guitar shop window in Leeds circa 1978/79. It was natural finish, and obviously made an impression on my young punk rocker eyes. Unfortunately it was way above my pay grade [Dole money - the 1970s unofficial Govt sponsorship scheme funding unemployable members of punk bands]
I've got the metalic gunmetal contemporary with active pickups and love it. It's actually my wife who kept telling me how much she loves the look of it and convinced me to finally pick it up. Great guitar.
Nice unboxing- btw, when opening a box like this, open both sides so the insides come out easily. Well, I like the colour. Looking forward to the mods and results!
Soz! 🤣 This one has become my new favourite too! 😁 It's not even been modded yet, but after a wee truss rod tweak and lowering the bridge it's playing like a dream! 😎👌
Throwing my 2 cents into the conversation - put some Alnico pickups on it. I've grown to love my Yamaha Alnicos - not as bright or forgiving as ceramic ones, but able to carry more emotion to the listener.
Kinda cool looking in white with the maple fretboard, but i just cant love that headstock. only a mother could love that. It will be nice to hear it with vintage style pickups, i have had good results with tonerider pickups. but they were single coils. Hope you have fun modding and playing your new purchase. thanks for posting.
Cheers mate! 😀🙏 Yeah It's definitely a Marmite headstock 😂 I've since gave the truss rod a wee tweak and lowered the bridge - it's playing amazingly now - Love it! 😀👌
Cheers mate! 😀🙏 Since the unboxing, I've gave the truss rod a wee tweak and lowered the bridge, it's playing amazingly now. I've not been able to put it down! Defo becoming a new favourite - can't wait to "improve" it more 😀👍 A lot of sellers on eBay are asking £250 - £300 for used on these too 😬
Just had a look at that one online - Cheers! 😀👍 Never tried a Fralin pickup before, A bit pricey, but the description seems to fit the bill for the neck - It's on the list now - Thank ya! 😀🙏
Hi Steve, the guitar looks stunning. I've only tried a Starcaster once. It was back in about 1976 and I was looking for my first good guitar. I saw a second hand one in a local guitar emporium. As I remember it looked very similar to your new guitar but the pickups had chrome covers. The price at the time was £150. I loved the guitar but £150 was about 6 weeks wages at the time. I saved some money and borrowed a bit and went back to buy it about three weeks later, but too late it was already sold. I ended up getting a Tele a week or two later.
Wow! That's awesome you got to try one of the originals! 76 was the first year of production too 😀 But also such a shame you missed out on it. You can grab a 2013 re-issue Fender Starcaster (modern player Series - MIC) used for around the same price these days (around £750 -£900) those originals go for about £3k-4k now! 🤯
I think so! Looking at them 2nd hand on ebay, people want around £250 - £300. More than new in some cases - Bonkers! 🤯 and YES! I'm still looking at them on eBay 😂🙈
Beautiful White Affinity Starcaster with maple fretboard! A Seymour Duncan P-Rail in the neck will give you a great P90 tone plus you have a split rail single and humbucker tones, and with a Triple Shot ring can wire series/parallel and in/out phase. I'm with you on the headstock, it's bad news they tossed the cool unique one for a Strat headstock in the new models. I haven't played one yet got to try one.
Thank ya mate! 😀👍 Great suggestion too! I had the P-Rail and Triple shot as top of the list, but unfortunately they only come in creme or black and apparently (according to forums) the triple shot doesn't have enough space for a standard covered humbucker
Aaaah how great, you included a pic of my starcaster project in your vid. I'm totally honored! Looking forward to see your mods on this wonderful instrument 👌. As for the neck pickup. It might sound dull but why not just put a '57 style humbucker in there? They are quite bright and sound a little single coily (p90 ish).
Ah it's you! Apologies mate - I always get confused with usernames and Instagram pages etc soz for not giving proper credit 😬 And cheers for the suggestion - will add it to the list of ones to consider 😃👍
Enjoyed your video. I have no experience with Starcaster. I have an old T400 DeArmond a sub brand of Fender which I really like that has found it’s way onto several recordings over the years. The Starcaster looks interesting - maybe some toaster style pickups similar to those on my DeArmond might be interesting.
Cheers mate! 😀🙏 Yeah that kinda more quirky, jangly sound is the kind of tones I really dig these days. I have a set of Fender Fidelitrons, I've been dying to chuck in something. I'll keep mulling it over 😁👍
This is usually due to cheap pots and capacitors. Replace the pots with Bournes or CTS and a quality capacitor and you will be surprised how much better even stock pickups can sound!😉👍✨
@@BudgetPedalChap Cheers mate! Ideally I'd like to go brass, but with either option it will be hard to find matching shades/colours. Might go Black & Gold based off of the Guyker trem I've been looking at 👍
@@gringogreen4719 Well I'll definitely be looking to have the Bridge pickup splittable via push/push anyway, regardelss of what goes in the bridge. I like the changes it brings to the middle position. My tech is gonna hate me for asking to fit a push/push in this guitar 😂
Hell yeah a mod project! White n golds a classy choice, you goin for black witch hats with gold reflectors? Or for a bit of fun... marshall amp knobs ;) Pickups... mojo pickups are always a good shout, sunbears too or tried n true bareknuckle. But black bobbins gold pole pieces and gold cover/frame type (havent the foggiest what youd call it but the cover with the main top cut out), thatd tie the black surrounds into gold hardware nicely ;) Also twin push/push for phase and either coil split or parallell :) thatd sound insane :) Good shout on the practice neck, them stains can be a sod to apply ;) Crackin vid as always sir :) n a bloody beaut of a geetar right there :)
Thank ya kindly mate! Loads great suggestions here 😃👍 Have heard great stuff about sunbears 😎👍 Defo coil split on the bridge - hopefully via push/push pot if the body is deep enough or a switch will do 😃👍
that needs some nice chromed metal pickup rings, that'll really give it some instant extra class. They revolutionised the appearance of my Eastcost Baritone, along with some glorious Entwistle HV58s (flagship of the range for a reason, and they come in cream & black bobbin) for bridge I have other favourites too, for neck pickup they are the best that there is available at any price in my experience .
Black Dog Music carry metal pickup rings , and ebay does them even cheaper. Chrome is great as there seems to be only one colour of Chrome. "Gold" is hard work as no two companies seem to agree on what colour gold is, so it can be hard work to match colours. I'm honestly in no mood to try that again. Choose wisely.
I too like that headstock. Don't have 1 as maple is heavy & the guitar seems never to weigh less than 7lbs. May have to do some serious weight engineering on this 1 like adding a backplate & block removal....
As I said on the stream, you did point out that people associate you with Superstrats but I associate you just as much with the Starcaster. There's a little bit of Indie kid in you ;)
Ha! Thank you! 😀🙏 I'd like to think I'm equal parts Strat and Starcaster 😜 and Althought I'm not such a big fan these days, it was Oasis that got me started on Guitar 😀
Ooooh! Cheers mate! 😀👍 I could be wrong but it does smell like they're gonna be discontinued soon. The black one has already vanished from Fender.com and there's a new version out in white now
Recently tried some mini humbuckers in the neck position paired with a humbucker in the bridge, really enjoy them lovely warm sound. Also being narrowfield they don't get muddy. I'd definitely do chrome covers on that Olympic white starcaster. Dig the new guitar, Cheers m8! 🍻
Thank ya kindly mate! 😀🙏 I've been getting very curious about mini hums recently. I know this doesn't make any sense but... I wonder if there's such a thing as Humbucker sized Mini Hums 🤔
Ooo that looks rather nice, hmmm I don’t have a Semi……. noo noo GAS!!! 😂 I do actually want a Semi, I like the shape of the body and neck so……. I think if I was going to mod it, I’d replace the pots, switch and jack and here’s the biggie…. Filtertron pickups!!! 🔥 Plus maybe a Guyker trem!
I could be wrong, but it certainly smells like they're gonna be discontinued. The Black one has already vanished from fender.com and there's a new version of the white one out. As for Trons - I've got a set of Fender Fidelitrons I've been dying to try out 😁
Sounds good, squier is having to up the ante because of jet and HB etc. Just bought a squier affinity telecaster mocha and fallen for it big time but severely tempted by one of these.
I'm now in love with the affinity necks! Love the profile! 😀 I could be wrong, but it certainly smells like they're gonna be discontinued. The Black one has already vanished from fender.com and there's a new version of the white one out
If yo do stay with the 'olympic white' & black look, I would only change the pickups (zebra for more modern, Filtertron for classy and Fishman fluence for something completely different) and maybe color the bottom part of the headstock black. I do not think gold hw would work with it and black would be to dark overall. Plus you lose the classy style of the starcaster. Not a fan of the knobs but I wonder what would work better. Perhaps something more 'fatter' like SC-Style Speedknobs Regarding the color range.. yeah not much in there for me. SB, white and black.. wow really going for some style there. Oh look there is also a CAR. At least they have a binding, but on the side.. would have been nicer on the top. Missed trying one out during my last visit to T.. will try on the next trip.
Ooooh!! I've never tried Fishman! 😃 I wonder how much of a hassle that would be 🤔 Ideally I'd like to brass rather than gold, but don't think I'll manage to find the hardware all matching in colour. The guyker trem options are black, gold, or black & Gold. Still mulling it over. And I'm hoping go for a "headstock cap" seen this cool thing on Instagram 😎👍
I'm a GFS fan and my go to would be the Surf 90 pickups (chrome and the fiberboard bobin top). But see if you can find something similar to that in the UK or Europe.
@@stevecassidyguitar We've talked about it before. I mention the Surf 90s as they are a cross of a DeArmond meets a P-90 so something that isn't a humbucker or a P-90. I'm not sure what the shipping and tariffs would be it definitely is a great pickup. In the middle it's him canceling.
Ah yeah... I know the stuff you mean... I think that might work best on a black finish 🤔 Or if this was a polar/snow white, but it's got a wee touch of yellow in it 👍 I've been looking at the black & gold trem tho. Unfortunately it doesn't have the flat arm I prefer. Getting very fussy in ma old age 😂🙈
@@stevecassidyguitar I was thinking the black and gold too. I just won a epiphone dot from daily guitar draw haven’t owned a true semihollow. Had the Gibson Blueshawk many years ago. The starcaster headstock would grow on me there are a lot worse out there🤣
I love the guitar. Not a fan of the headstock. I wanna pick up one with the 70s style headstock that they have just released.just think looks a little better. Another mod project for me. That will be number 12 in my growing collection .
Awesome! 😀👍 To be honest, If I didn't already have the Fender Starcaster in aged Cherry burst, I'd definitely get that new affinity in Sienna Sunburst 🤩 (But I'd probably put that spare neck on it, because I love the original headstock) It's definitely a Marmite headstock 😂👍
@@davidkay3443 I'd guess they're probably different models. Likely cheaper for fender to source a load of new OEM covered buckers than bother to tweak the old ones. But I could be wrong though. I'm hoping to get a hold of one of the new ones if they get them in stock in my local shop. and can hopefully do a comparison before I start modding this one 😂
HA! I get ya mate! It's the headstock for a lot of people - Very Marmite! 😂 and cheers for "Oxymoron" - I was looking for that word yesterday in a comment! I was pondering wether Humbucker sized mini Humbuckers exist 😂🙈
That's the question! 🤓👍 It's either Ali Express or TEMU. Theydon't even have lenses in 😂🙈 Long story... I had to make a vid about it: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-LKLu7dve2gc.htmlsi=fYeFlbR_xYab_x5M
