Grace - An Irish Love Song (Cover) by Seth Staton Watkins
Happy Valentine's Day! I know I've done this one before but I wanted to sing this song today and I thought it deserved a remaster.
This beautiful Irish ballad was written in 1985 by Seán and Frank O'Meara. It was written about Grace Gifford, who married her fiancé, rebel leader Joseph Mary Plunkett, in Dublin's Kilmainham Gaol (featured as the backdrop of the video). Only seven hours after their wedding ceremony at the gaol's austere chapel, Plunkett was executed by firing squad for his part in the 1916 Easter Rising in Dublin. The best known version of "Grace" was recorded by Irish musician Jim McCann who was a member of the Irish folk group The Dubliners for a few years in the 1970's. My version is influenced heavily by the High Kings rendition.
Lyrics:
As we gather in the chapel here in old Kilmainham Gaol
I think about these past few weeks, oh will they say we've failed?
From our school days they have told us we must yearn for liberty
Yet all I want in this dark place is to have you here with me
Oh Grace just hold me in your arms and let this moment linger
They'll take me out at dawn and I will die
With all my love I place this wedding ring upon your finger
There won't be time to share our love for we must say goodbye
Now I know it's hard for you my love to ever understand
The love I bare for these brave men, the love for my dear land
But when Padraic called me to his side down in the GPO
I had to leave my own sick bed, to him I had to go
Oh, Grace just hold me in your arms and let this moment linger
They'll take me out at dawn and I will die
With all my love I'll place this wedding ring upon your finger
There won't be time to share our love for we must say goodbye
Now as the dawn is breaking, my heart is breaking too
On this May morn as I walk out, my thoughts will be of you
And I'll write some words upon the wall so everyone will know
I loved so much that I could see his blood upon the rose
Oh, Grace just hold me in your arms and let this moment linger
They'll take me out at dawn and I will die
With all my love I'll place this wedding ring upon your finger
There won't be time to share our love for we must say goodbye
There won't be time to share our love for we must say goodbye

Because the Irish have been through so much… we have been m-ed, oppressed, destroyed, overtaken, suppressed, and more for nearly 1000 years now… and we had to write these to survive and rise above our traumas and struggles. It’s no surprise that the songs to help these people survive are heartbreaking (aligning with my own post trauma writing)… it’s their strongest material because it makes them feel the deepest, and it brings about a coping that would otherwise be unreachable. When you comb through the depths of your soul, you find an utterly beautiful grief that needs to be told, and an inspiration merely divine! You write and write resilience until it comes to you… and theirs has inspired so many in the process… Fun fact from a researcher (and me) as well: Songs like these are traditional Irish music. Written by the Irish for the Irish… if at any point you hear a song that’s upbeat and it’s “Irish”, it has been tampered with… around the Act of the Union in 1801, the British purged the Irish music and rewrote many traditional songs so they were more upbeat and positive, as I suppose they didn’t approve of all of these depressing themes and wished to hear something that was more to their desires. They called these “Irish” songs, but much like the original county names of Ireland, they’ve been rewritten by the British and are no longer theirs.

A revolutionary is a romantic first and foremost and this song shows that. To love the cause you must love another .Revolutionary love transcends all love. Because it calls for sacrifice and dedication. A willingness to love truly until death do you part. A beautiful song that demonstrates love and revolutionary spirit hand in hand. Sung so beautifully by great folk hero

John 15:13 Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends. Jesus said that. And He did it. I think that revolutions tend to bring that kind of love to light because so many captured prisoners are executed (sometimes tortured). To say that revolutionary love transcends all other love is a bit much. Jesus laid down His life not only for His friends, but also for His enemies & for all generations. That being said, revolutionary love is very stirring; it's why we cry when we sing our national anthem & remember those who laid down their lives to secure the freedom that I enjoy. Do you happen to know the meaning of the line, "I loved so much that I could see his blood upon the rose"?
