Thanks Rod for not being afraid to sing a song about Irish history , there are English people calling it anti English what a bizarre understanding of the song , it’s a song of sadness of two young people who loved each other separated for ever by conflict ...
To me this is just so disrespectful to the brave men and women of 1916. It's sad when celebrity just get's it all so very wrong and it's just another nail in the coffin of true Irish history which is so misunderstood or forgotten. As Pearse said, The fools, the fools, the fools...
@@liamjpbrady And completely wrong and in my view disrespectful to the executed of 1916, what they stood for, who they fought against and full of incorrect supposed "facts" (in fact they are so wrong it would be laughable if it wasn't so bad) so you must also be completely devoid of knowledge around the Easter Rising and the aftermath and obviously not understand the irony of this spectacle and how offensive it is to people like me who absolutely love and adore these brave men and women. Look at James Connolly's last statement and if you still don't get it, there is no hope for you on the subject I'm afraid.
It's a great song and you might understand the whole story but unfortunately Rod obviously doesn't from what I have just heard, and as an Englishman do you really understand the whole story, I wonder, unfortunately even most Irish don't.
The ultimate price for a great love is not paid by the one who dies, but by the one who must endure an eternity of heartbreak after. I learned this recently when my parents died.
I first heard this in Turkey in an Irish bar before a Celtic match. The bar plays it every time there is an Irish or Scottish Celtic match. I heard it in Glasgow in Argyle street a month ago it is such a great reminder of what went on at that time, I’m neither Scottish or Catholic but this is such a be beautiful song about a tragedy that it should resound with everyone.

Her name was Grace Gifford and she never had another husband she was a true lady and there is many more people during the rising who didn't get talked about but in Ireland they are legends and never be forgotten
@@markbowes4704 I think this marriage has made Joseph Mary Plunkett and Grace Gifford story has made them immortal..it's a beautiful song. Rod does a great job but i cant get past Jim McCann's version..
And that he got most of the details wrong. Grace was 28 years old when she married and was 67 years old when she died in 1955. She would have been 81 years old in 1969 had she lived until then and not many people born in 1888 like she was, did so. Joseph was 29 years old when they married and so was a year older than her, rather than the other way around.
@@seanscanlon9067 He was not shot the next morning, He was taken out and shot when the 15 minutes was over. Salute to Rod for singing this heartbreaking love song, but Jim McCann sings it like no other.
Love the fact rod Stewart sings this song after hearing it at a Celtic football match, it really got to him and he has visited kilmanin gaol and the graves of all who died in the name of freedom 💕🙏 and 22 yr old grace Clifford never married, again ,,now that's true love 💕

Arguably the most powerful love song of all time . They had 10 minutes together , then Joseph Mary plunket was shot to death and grace Gifford became a widow . Heart breaking
I believe she lived until the 60s she never remarried and was also involved in the 1916 uprising they were very young Patrick was a young man who suffered from tuberculosis but was instrumental as a writer because he was one of the main signatories of the proclamation he was sentenced to death and Grace was a talented artist after the majority of Ireland gained independence she lived her life quietly in Dublin
Actually quite a heartbreaking story behind this, is true he married grace but she didn't have it easy in anyway shape or form after he was killed, his parents done everything they could to stop her inheritance from him and she lived in poverty for many years

Rod you have done your self proud really good version love it because when you're in a pub in the north of Ireland they will play your version of this great song no Matter how is in the bar 👍👌🇨🇮 🏴
As an immensely proud Irish-American, Grace is one of my dearest songs, taught it to my children (My daughter's middle name is Grace) as toddlers. Together as a family we traveled to Ireland and Northern Ireland and learned and walked the grounds of the GPO and Kilmainham Goal, me as a grand-child and namesake for a 1916 Uprising Survivor and my children, my son is also a namesake of his great grandfather. Fast forward to 2016 my son a Sgt. in the United States Marines Corps attended the 100th Anniversary celebration of the uprising as a member of then Vice-President Biden's security detail, walking the street toting a gun just like his Great Grandfather that day in 2016. I still get chills when I hear this song and yes I do tear up.
Michael Crowe , yes I agree, terrific version, I’m sure he’s rehearsed it many many times to get it right, fair play , although for me , Jim Mcann of the Dubliners does the best version
Michael Criwe, Jim McCann sang it well, but unfortunately gave a lot of 'information' which was totally wrong. At the time of the wedding Grace was 28, Joe was 29. Grace died in December 1955, not 1969. At the tine of her death she lived alone. I don't know where he got the misinformation.
My late wife Cathleen and I were big Rod fans. Jim McCann's rendition is magnificent and heart rending with depth , quality and emotion. I am pleased that this song has been brought to a worldwide audience but really Rod's version is truly awful - it just does not suit him at all (he is still a wonderful entertainer but should stick to what he is good at). I am a stickler for accuracy and was disappointed that research of the facts was so sloppy !!!
My brother-in-law passed late last year aged 59 and this was played at his funeral at his request. Every time it is played it brings tears to my eyes RIP Eddie Burns.
So much going on beneath the surface with this performance, Rod inhaling at the start finding his voice, fingerwagging the backing vocals to sit back because he'd found his peak. Greatest performance. Talent and material rhyme.
I noticed that as well. It could be seen as rude, but it wasn't. He was just making sure they knew he was gonna go for it alone. They were smiling and then joined him again later. I bet he's a great guy to work for 🎶 💚

james o keeffe: He does need to have the story right, though. He probably took the incorrect information from what Jim McCann said. I have no idea where he got what he said, but it was very inaccurate. One other thing: Rod Stewart referred to 12 executions. There were 14 in Kilmainham, plus Thomas Kent in Cork Jail and Roger Casement in London.
Pirate Commander, yes, several people have sent me videos of Celtic fans singing "Grace". Very impressive that they all seem to know all of the words, not just the chorus. It is touching to hear thousands of them singing about my relative.
I am of Irish desent and when I heard the song Grace boy could I connect with that song! In our family ancestry going back to 1815 none of my relatives have ever gotten divorced. We had a motto in our family and that is this One love ❤️ One life.
I'm roaring after watching this, lol,as you say,one of the most beautiful and saddest songs ever written.Fair play to oul' Rod ,he did it justice.I could tell it really means something to him.
I am an old fan of Rod Stewart. I remember buying the single Maggie May. I'm an Irishman and it is very nice to hear Rod singing this song and empathizing with one of Ireland's great patriots. Right on Rod!
I am an old fan of Rod too, since the Gasoline Alley days but now Sir Rod Stewart has no right to sing this song after having accepted the knighthood from the very crown and empire who caused this, who raped Ireland and killed Irishmen and woman!

Here are the lyrics of the full song. As we gather in the chapel here in old Kilmainham Jail I think about these past few weeks, oh will they say we've failed? From our school days they have told us we must yearn for liberty Yet all I want in this dark place is to have you here with me Oh Grace just hold me in your arms and let this moment linger They'll take me out at dawn and I will die With all my love I place this wedding ring upon your finger There won't be time to share our love for we must say goodbye Now I know it's hard for you my love to ever understand The love I bare for these brave men, the love for my dear land But when Pádraic called me to his side down in the GPO I had to leave my own sick bed, to him I had to go Oh, Grace just hold me in your arms and let this moment linger They'll take me out at dawn and I will die With all my love I'll place this wedding ring upon your finger There won't be time to share our love for we must say goodbye Now as the dawn is breaking, my heart is breaking too On this May morn as I walk out, my thoughts will be of you And I'll write some words upon the wall so everyone will know I loved so much that I could see his blood upon the rose Oh, Grace just hold me in your arms and let this moment linger They'll take me out at dawn and I will die With all my love I'll place this wedding ring upon your finger There won't be time to share our love for we must say goodbye For we must say goodbye
Every irsh person iever met only goes on about the past but most of them cant wait to fucking get out usa australia or england. Hypocrites or as we say here in Colorado bitches lol

Go into any pub in Ireland and you'll find a better singer than jim Mccann, Rod is well past his best but I'll bet his studio cut of this is the best version ever and i enjoyed this live version more than mccanns.
Edward Donnachie I've never claimed Jim McCann was better than Rod and I'm sure they're are better singers than him. But Jim's version is my favourite of any one I've heard. It's just set in my mind. Xxx
Mairead Meehan Mairead I'm right beside you on my favourite person to sing it with out a doubt in my opinion Jim is by far the best it's just the information you said Jim give's at the start is incorrect as if you look at other comments you will learn the correct information on the BEAUTIFUL SONG well if you haven't already done that Mairead ✌💚🍀☘✔
Edward Donnachie And that is why EAVERY ONE is unique I'll be looking out for ROD'S PERFORMANCE and I'm sure it will be another proud moment for lots of us I'm sure it will be for me ✌🖒🍀☘in any way ✌🍀☘💚

By the week rod Stewart goes higher and higher in my estimations as an artist and a human being stay healthy Rod music wouldn't be the same without you
For me it's about the song and the two people who the song is, about!! Irish history is written in song and this one is exceptionally great. It causes a tear every time.. Rebels we will always be until every corner of our land is free. England itself will always be in chains until Ireland is in bondage no more..
Well if the English had a referendum to leave irland and Scotland The English would let you stand on your own 2 feet . we voted to leave uerope .you can see by comments English basterds etc the Irish poeple saying these things were not about at time of killing.unlike the English who in the 70s lost love ones . English poeple don't know what all the trouble is about they would give your country back with a vote and every one happy. They give Scottish a vote to leave they don't give the English a vote to leave Scottish. Hopefully we be split in to our own country s and peace and recentment gone

rod as a devoted celtic fan i hope you will giVe the 2 old men you met in ireland wat a amazing song such a beautiful story SO SAD GD LUCK ON THE NEW ALBUM
A few details: Joe was 29 at the time of his marriage and execution in 1916. Grace was 28. They were meant to be married on Easter Sunday at the same time as Joe's sister, Geraldine, whose wedding to Tom Dillon did go ahead. Because of preparations for the Rising Joe could not get away and his and Grace's wedding was deferred. On 3rd May (after her brother-in-law, Thomas MacDonagh, had been executed at dawn that morning) Grace got word that permission gad been granted for a wedding in Kilmainham Gaol. She went and bought a wedding ring and went to the Gaol at 6 p.m., as instructed. She was left for 4 hours in a cold, dirty, damp, dark room, then brought to the Gaol chapel which was lit by candles and where she was met by a priest from a local church and told that neither she nor Joe could speak nor touch each other outside of the wedding ceremony. There were two soldiers who were to act as witnesses. Joe was brought in through a different door, handcuffed. The handcuffs were removed. The wedding ceremony was performed. Joe's handcuffs were replaced and he was taken back out through the same door through which he had entered. The priest brought Grace to a house nearby so that she could rest. At 2 a.m. some soldiers came to the house to bring her back to the Gaol for a final visit before Joe's execution. Grace was brought to Joe's cell which was crowded with arned soldiers. One soldier had a watch and told them they had 10 minutes. Under the circumstances they could not have a personal conversation. After 10 minutes Grace was brought out. Some time between 3.30 a.m. and 4 a.m. Joe was shot. Grace died in December 1955. I remember her well.
Marie I'm not saying you are not telling the truth about age and year of death may the LORD BLESS JOSEPH AND GRACE but it will be something I will be looking up tomorrow as I am half asleep sending this comment if it's true I am greatfull for you eďucating my self and others it's just I allway's went with Jim McCann's story nice and proud story from you Marie ontill tomorrow God bless
Popes Army Yeee Haaa, you are more than welcome to research the information I have given. I don't know if Jim McCann ever met Grace but it seems unlikely that he did, since what he said was wrong. He was a great singer and sang beautifully and the story of the wedding obviously touched him, but he didn't check the facts.
Muriel McAuley It was a pleasure to do that small bit of research and a pleasure in telling people that I know about the small experience I had in doing it and you are 100% the right person to get the correct information on the situation as you gave in an earlier comment thank you very much MURIEL 💚☘

Rod heard the celtic fans singing this song at a cup final and fell in love with it and wanted to record it. But before he recorded the song he wanted to know more about it so he came to Ireland and visited kilmainham gaol and some of the other 1916 rising sites. According to Muriel McAuley who commented below, Rod got some of his info wrong but we won't hold that against as he done such a beautiful job singing the song. R.I.P Joe and Grace and all of the 1916 rebels. God's curse on you england, you cruel-hearted monster, Your deeds they would shame, all the devils in hell.
Just an observation as Englishman who has studied the Easter Rising with an absolute passion for the past 35 years, have prayed by their gravesides at Abour Hill many, many times, attended the 100th anniversary at the GPO and have even written songs about these great men and women, I note you quote from the James Connolly's song, however, let's not forget also the words contained within Connolly's late statement before his execution, "We went out to break the connection between this country and the British Empire". Rod was very much part of my youth (happy days) and whilst as you say Rod got "most of his facts completly wrong" my only issue with Rod singing this song is the fact that Sir Rod is of course also a CBE (Commander of The British Empire), the medal of which carries an image of King George V (King at the time of the Rising) and also carries the words "For God and The Empire" an Empire the Rebels gave their lives fighting against to Free Their Country from British Rule. John Lennon famously of course returned his MBE to the Queen out of principle and the likes of David Bowie refused offers of both a CBE and a Knighthood and huge respect to them for doing that, perhaps Rod should consider doing the same thing "out of principle" if he is so sincere about the subject and those events of 1916.
@@Lissadell1916 I admire your passion for a subject i know you would have heard nothing about while you were in school. Would i be right in thinking there's an Irish connection somewhere in your family. [ I'd be very surprised if there's not ] As for Rod, i don't think he would be into the whole republican thing, i'd say for him it's more to the point that he's a mad Celtic supporter "and as i said earlier" he heard it being sung at a cup final and just wanted to know more about it. I have to say, in my book any English man that wants to know a bit more of what went on over here during those years is more than welcome because i have spoken to many lads from England during my life time and to no surprise they knew nothing of the history between out two countries.
@@garyconnolly4128 I am really surprised that Rod only seems to have gained knowledge of the Easter Rising in recent years as his very early music and career (and that of his contemporaries) was actively promoted by the grandson of one of the bravest and most honourable of the 1916 Rebels and martyr's of course (and one of my personal hero's), the same grandson also having a massive impact on British youth culture in the 60's and 70's. I also had the privilege of chatting to his other grandson at the 100th anniversary outside the GPO.
