This first 30 minutes of the full, upcoming (July 12) Volume I documentary on Grace Vanderwaal goes pretty much chronologically through Grace's AGT experience, showing exquisitely the kind of extraordinary person Grace is and what she's gone through, resulting in "Stray" in 2019. The Vandervault folks did a wonderful job putting this captivating package together. I can't wait for the full Volume I to come out!

I haven’t seen this documentary! I will go find it though. Your review and this preview had tears streaming down my face. This has been an incredible journey with both highs and lows. It is difficult growing up from preteen to a young women before millions of people. Grace is doing it her way and she will make mistakes along the way, as we all do. I hope her fans realize that she can’t remain the adorable girl in the yellow pants forever. Her dad and I are so proud of her and how she has navigated these situations of her fans needing her to stay the same but she needs to grow and blossom like all kids do. She is becoming a young woman and her new style outside and in is reflected in her music as she is evolving. It truly is a magical thing to watch happen. ❤️ Thank you for posting this, I enjoyed watching 😉

Tina, “a magical thing” indeed! My subscribers and I are devoted fans of the person we regularly refer to as a genius and the greatest singer songwriter of her generation, without hyperbole. On top of that, unbelievably, we also think she is the most genuine and sweetest and most giving and funniest soul and spirit of her generation as well. Watching and enjoying Grace’s creative journey has been an absolute and deep joy for all of us, so I can only imagine the incredible journey for you and Dave and the kids! You probably don’t know this, but my subscribers and I regularly compliment you and Dave on the guidance, freedom and protection that you have obviously given Grace, especially during these difficult last four years. Our hats are off to you. From our hearts, we say thank you! And thank you so much for reaching out to me. I can hardly express properly my happiness at you doing so. My best to you and the family, and please tell Grace I said hello and keep having tons of fun!😉

So happy you found this Tina. Devoted fans who put this together, not to gain any profit but to show the world, who Grace is, is just as beautiful as Grace herself. And yes, Grace definetly got tired of the TS questions. I would suggest you contact Mark Lalonde since he is the main driving force behind the Vandervault. Also to re-emphasize, the Vandervault has always been self financed, with absolutely NO monetization on any of their works. The main function of the group is an OFF LINE secure storage of all things relevent to Grace's music and her growth as an artist. All this noted on their ".org " site.

You turned me to mush this morning. What a great production from the Vandervault people. Loved that teacher. He said what I've been saying about her use of chords ( in a better way, of course) She definitely doesn't follow the rules. He mentioned a few minor changes he did and I noticed that there was a change in key in Beautiful Thing. You see it in the video. They show her playing it before the performance and in a different key in the performance. He probably had something to do with that. I'm so glad you reacted to this. Thanks Dax! Great reaction. You're nicely filling the void we have now by Grace taking a break from public eye. About Simon and Howie instantly knowing how talented she was and what she will become: I think the judges get to hear a lot from the producers when there's a truly exciting contestant on the show. So Simon and Howie must have had seen Grace's videos long before the audition. And maybe they were expecting something great. But then got completely blown away. The producers wanted her to sing IDKMN again on the finals, she instead sang Clay. This is a typical thing when an artist makes a huge impact I think. The first song is presented in the finals in a more dramatic way, with bigger production behind it. I think that was their plan. Which also would come from knowing that she was a big deal. You can see, Grace probably thought that was a cheesy idea. So she sang another new song. BTW, I'm not a member of VanderVault. Lot of people seem to think I am, from seeing my name on this preview. I've mostly just done some adjustments to the final audio. All the hard work was done primarily by Mark Lalonde, Ernst Mullner and then the other names you see in the credits.

@@daxmusix I came to tell you the same. It's a fact that tells you so much about what we've seen from her since then. The fashion sense and the ideas about her music videos. Grace has said the initial pre-screeners for AGT, done at a local NY college, ended up having her perform and sing every song she knew on her ukulele. This would require substantially more time than normal, and would seem to indicate they knew they had someone extraordinary on their hands. It is indeed hard to believe that their findings, and likely the recordings from that session wouldn't have made it to Simon and perhaps Howie well before the later televised auditions. Reality TV is often far from real.

Taking the time for this is a real service. Thanks, Dax. Since I know you care about being accurate as we try to help Grace by helping others get to know her: the time between the banana-pants and the award speech was much more than a year, March 4 2016 to Nov 30 2017, almost a year and 9 months. It was six months between recording the audition and the AGT finale (Sept 14) and then over a year to the speech. Makes the metamorphosis more understandable. That said, you're doing great keeping dates straight and helping us place her music in the context of her story.

Among Grace’s many talents and abilities, Grace is the consummate performer. For example, because she wanted to showcase her vocal ability in Beautiful Thing, she waited until the audience’s applause has completely abated before starting her performance. This signaled her desire for the audience to remain silent throughout the performance, and they basically did. Light The Sky, on the other hand, was meant to be a participatory song, so she started her performance while the audience was still raucously applauding. And sure enough, the audience participated more or less on cue. Everything Grace did on AGT was calculated to showcase different aspects of her wide-ranging artistry. Mission accomplished. The amazing Grace VanderWaal!

Another excellent reaction here Dax. I have watched this preview 3+ times and your reaction adds depth and insight to those early years, especially AGT. I still feel that TS interview at the end is borderline abusive of Grace and doesn’t add to the doc - let HER say what she feels, that she wants to be Grace not anybody else; that interview adds nothing. Anyway overall it is a super well done doc and holds up well over multiple viewings I have noticed. I actually wonder if there is a “How Grace Wins AGT” doc that is needed, that really illuminates more what happened there... you touch on some of it in your comments... how both Howie and Simon saw her greatness in those 90 seconds, the look on Simon’s face you highlighted (it is like a look of recognition somehow), how she grows through those 4 performances, the back story with the producers, her arranging the songs with input on the production too I heard, etc., etc. The enormity of what she accomplished there, in so many ways. Anyway you added a lot here. Thanks!

Tom, The only thing I can figure about them keeping in that last horrible interview was showing us what Grace had to put up with, and how she still remains elegantly above it, which it does show. They even talk about it a little bit before the interview. I think I’m actually glad they kept it in, so we could see what she did have to go through. Hell, I was at the end of my rope! I’m actually not too happy that Simon found it necessary to compare Grace to Taylor Swift. I think he was showing off a bit. Grace is so universally different from Taylor, so wonderfully quirky and brilliant. And saying such a thing could potentially put enormous pressure on such a young person. If it weren’t for Grace herself and her wonderful family, that pressure could’ve been overwhelming. And of course, Simon gave the shallow media folks their universal hook for each interview, putting more pressure on Grace to remain above the fray, which she does spectacularly, but not without having to endure it.
@tomfrench954
@tomfrench954 4 года назад
OK Dax I better drop my complaint here. It was silly of me to suggest it didn’t add anything. I will say that I actually love the way she handles herself in the interview - it is an awesome display of self control under fire. However, I also love the way she defends herself in other interviews when asked the TS question, how articulate she is (at 12yo), her composure, her Grace, her non defensiveness. It is a question of focus and emphasis to me. More of those exchanges would do a better job showing what she had to put up with and how well she handled herself IMO. This is in there largely because visually and emotionally it is so powerful. In a way it is not possible to not have it in there.

The full bio-pic will not come out until the end of Summer, because of delays due to Covid-19. This project has run into a number of delays for various reasons. Personnel changes was the most recent cause of delay, before Covid. This has been an ambitious project from the get-go. I have feared that it might be abandoned because of the various difficulties that they have run into. But, fortunately they appear committed and continue to fight through the problems and move forward. I will not hold my breath for this to be completed and released at the current goal date. Good comments. I look forward to the whole documentary. Too Long; Don't Read. Note: most of the facts in my comments are from interviews that can be found in the Vandervault. I am amused how the documentary cut the chorus of "Twelve Stars." I wonder if that is a choice Grace has made from her awareness of how her songs influence people or a choice her label has made as a "not the Grace sound we want to promote." Twelve Stars is no longer on "Never Mind It's Just Me." You know how with children you have that one shot for them to decide whether they trust you or not? If you exude confidence, adults can be convinced to trust you over and over despite all evidence that you are untrustworthy (hence "confidence trick" and "confidence artist" normally shortened to "con artist"), but most children really seem to have a hard limit. The AGT producers told Grace what song to do for her initial TV audition and it was not what she wanted to do. Grace wanted to do "I Don't Know My Name," but they told her to prepare Florence and the Machine's "Dog Days are Over." So that's what she prepared and practiced from after the Queen's College audition until the TV show. Three days before the TV show, they told her to change to "I Don't Know My Name." That's when they lost her trust and she stopped doing what they said. Grace was nervous because she was not prepared and she had to remember all the changes she had made so her song would fit into the 90 second time slot she was allowed. Despite some major mistakes (Grace dropped "questions" off "don't ask me any questions") she persisted and finished triumphantly. Her unique voice and lyrics shown through. The cello accompaniment was Grace's idea. Clay was originally supposed to be about how she was grateful that those around her (I imagine the AGT producers had themselves in mind) had molded and shaped her to become a better performer/person. The song turned out to have a different (the exact opposite) message and one that resonated much better with people, leading to her win. Grace also started a trend of other people not trusting the AGT producers. Shin Lim did not do what the producers wanted him to do and he won. Grace mentioned in one interview that the only thing she remembered about winning was that woman screaming her name. Also, Grace didn't toss "some songs she had written while on tour with Imagine Dragons" as the documentary so kindly says. She tossed an entire ep (corrected thanks to Jeff_W) album that had been recorded and was about to be released. I can't even imagine the discussions with the record company that led up to that album not being released. Stray might not be one of your favorites for many of the same reasons that Darkness Keeps Chasing Me never will be, but you did hit the nail on the head when you said it was a pivotal song and very similar to Clay.

You know that the audition was highly edited. I'm not so sure that Grace dropped it off or it was post edited. If you listen close you can hear her start to say "questions" Slow the video down to .5.

She also was talking about songs she had "wrote" for a planned EP... not songs she had recorded. The doc characterizes this correctly. She talks about it also during the Grammy Museum performance. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-DPBUnGdr36E.html

There really does need to be a very long documentary on what Grace went through on AGT that gets into specifics all the way through, before Grace forgets much of the experience. She is, frankly, a historical figure in music, whether many people realize that or not yet. The AGT experience needs to be put on film at length right now.

@@nutella3356 I agree, HIGHLY edited. I really dislike the AGT editing process, not only for Grace, but for everyone. I can even see why a stupid editor would cut it. I'll listen again.

Well, the documentary if you can call it that is out, and what a letdown. It looks nothing like this preview.

OK. after some time to process and reflect I get that you decided the sequence from that terrible interview has to be there - as some others have said too. Well to me it isn’t that simple - if you want us to know how bad it was for her that is one thing, but if it is a matter of showing what she had to deal with (what Vandervault says is the reason they kept it in the. My point is that there are other ways to make this point and many examples of her saying she wants to be the next Grace Vandervaal. They go for the most dramatic and emotional footage (at her expense IMO). There are other better ways to show how well she dealt with all that and how well she expressed herself. To me it is typical - go for the dramatic most emotional footage. It is a very negative clip that doesn’t represent what was going on or shows only a very very narrow take on it all. It is an abusive interview and in a way it is a cheap shot IMO!

I don't see how including that one particular interview is a cheap shot, in that it's at least appropriate for her to be asked about the Taylor Swift comparison at that particular time, only three months after the finale. One could make a full-length movie just from interviewers asking the same question, from early June 2016 to the present. In a different interview with this same Access Television, Grace was asked what it felt like winning AGT, and what was going through her mind. The date? March 10, 2020, more than FOUR YEARS after her AGT audition was filmed. She cut off the line of questioning by basically claiming she had amnesia, and made it clear to the interviewers that she wasn't going to answer any more questions on the subject. Showing one clip from December 2016 (which Grace handled just fine in MY opinion) to demonstrate that endless parade of lazy reporting and interviewing is more than reasonable.
@tomfrench954
@tomfrench954 4 года назад
Reasonable? Well I guess so but I wouldn’t put it that way. Since you so well point out she has been hounded with this, my view is that one abusive interview doesn’t make the point very well. I know there is the collage of questions before this and her saying after that she wants to be Grace, but. really? She handled it so well so many many times - why not show how well she did vs showing a terrible abusive interview that she survived. It is a very positive story IMO that gets lost in this edit.

@@tomfrench954 You make your point well. I just want to point out that it's not set up to be a fawning, rose-colored love-fest, but a reasonably balanced view of the subject thesis - "I Now Know My Name". For people who don't know her story, or have never seen that particular interview or others like it (and there are lots), it's illustrative of the kinds of things Grace has had to put up with, and how Grace got to a point where she told the record label what to do with their "writer's room" and set off on her own musical path.
@tomfrench954

Harlechmaker Yes for sure, you make a lot of sense.Some of what you say at the end of your post I did not know. Of course I don’t mean to suggest anything about a love fest. I’d like to see more of the interviews where she says I want to be Grace (at the Bean Runner for example). I realized just recently how really big a deal this is for her - she named her youtube page after this issue and wrote a sarcastic very short little ditty about it... I always wondered about that name. My point is less about this particular interview we are talking about - terrible as it is - and more about getting deeper or more thoroughly into what she was going through with this. For people who don’t know her let’s show how well she handled all this pressure about TS vs. just her ability to take a punch which is what this interview is really about (awesome as that ability is).

I am watching this again, and noticed that when Olivia comes out after Howie's Golden Buzzer, you didn't mention that Olivia almost knocked Grace over. Did you know that Grace said in an interview that the slo-mo of that scene hides the fact that she almost fell. I wonder what a difference that would have made, if we had seen her fall and her and Olivia end up in a pile on the floor. 2nd note: There was less than 1% difference between the winner, Grace and the 3rd place finisher, John Dorenbos, a magician. If the two magic acts that finished in 2nd and 3rd place hadn't split the vote of the magic loving audience, Grace would have lost.
