Grace Jones - The Russell Harty Show interview + Love is the Drug

The notorious interview from 18th November 1980 with all the boring bits cut out. The full 1/2 hour show is truly the BBC at its worst. The extra clips included here give you some idea what Grace had to put up with, something that is not obvious if you just watch the 'fight scene' out of context.
Featuring Grace Jones, W.A.Poucher and Patrick Lichfield.

@billmcdonald2445

@@luigiiodice3517 IMO she rivaled or exceeded Madonna's popularity in the late-70s to mid-80s in pop and disco. Grace's star faded in the late 80s while Madonna took it to another level, particularly with the song Vogue and popularizing "voguing". In the 90s Madonna kept going and also proved to be a more successful actress than Grace (but Jone's acting credits would surprise many). Madonna, a dancer, also took her choreography to another level, becoming a stellar performer. Grace, a model, didn't perform as much, but usually shocked with daring outfits and was always interesting to watch. Underrated, I don't think so. I actually used to think she was overrated, because though she could sing, she had very limited range, yet for-a-minute kept coming out with hits. She had a unique sound, was a style icon and was a visual phenomenon, an enigma, eccentric as well as being decidedly androgynous, before it was acceptable. Misunderstood, would probably be more fitting. She was/is an "artist".

Writing about the incident in her autobiography, she blamed the outburst on a combination of bad coke, hallucinations, and being covered in pigeon excrement. She penned: 'Bad coke was the last thing I wanted before I went on a live television show. The purest form, maybe, but anything else was not going into my body. 'I was meant to sit next to Russell Harty and keep still and quiet. I was all dressed up like an Amazonian seductress, and treated like the hired help. I thought, "This is no way to treat a guest." This wasn’t at all like what we’d rehearsed. 'Being stuck there while he ignored me made me feel very uncomfortable. I felt I was provoked. I was feeling exhausted, had no idea where I was, and was coated in pigeon s**t; now it seemed I was hallucinating that I was on a live chat show and the host was ignoring me. P***ed off, I poked him in the back.'

You don't see the previous 5 mins of petty sarcasm and passive aggression from him. Sure, she's clearly a bit sleep deprived and weird, but he's just firing off sarcy bullshit at her for a full 5 minutes before she snaps. Yes she picks up on the back turning thing which he has a legit excuse for, but that isn't what it's about. And literally who refers to someone as "she" and not their first name when in their company?? That is literally the first thing anyone ever taught me, beyond burping at the table.

The old guy is Walter Poucher (or W A Poucher), he was a research chemist for a perfume company. They allowed him to have rather extended time off for his walking and photography trips. He wrote a great number of books detailing and photographing hiking trails and more, also a number of perfume books. He was very well respected and renowned in both of his fields. The BBC made a programmer about him - The Perfumed Mountaineer He lived until he was 97

I can’t believe how rude he was to Grace. I think he was intimidated by her and tried his best to make her look stupid. Idiot of a man didn’t realise who he was speaking to. She’s an ICON and an artist. Oh I wonder what happened to his career after this interview. Grace is still going strong. She must have thought this: “Silly little man. Watch while I slay you with this performance” She rose above his stupidity, and petty behaviour. She reminded me of a LIONESS playing with a mouse. I thought she was going to explode. Grace really held her temper. Love Grace Jones. I hope she sees this.

If the BBC were paying her a fat fee then unlike the De Niro's who don't really participate yet take the money...all she was asking was for a little respect. Russell Harty was too establishment to understand the creative and original aspect of her. For all her lack of sleep? She was professional and slipped smoothly into her performance....thank you.

Are you serious? Dude was being straight up disrespectful with every question. Also, you don't know what he said or did before the cameras started rolling. Grace seemed like she was fed up with him from the start, so my only guess is he was being a bigoted a-hole prior to the show starting. Let's remember this was 1980s British television, when interviewers would get away with all types of inappropriate behavior and questions. Grace wasn't having any of it.

Harty was the epitome of rudeness towards her. I remember watching it at the time and not realising how badly he treated her. Don't know if that was because I was used to that kind of behaviour back then, or whether it was heavily edited. Regardless he was really rude and deserved her wrath.

You wouldn't pick up on it at the time because were just more used to it back then. Middle aged white men were just condescending in general, especially to women, and especially to black women, and especially to black women from another country. He had nothing but disdain for her despite the fact she was a global star and he was a tiny little talk show host. Thankfully times have moved on. A reaction like that today from someone in Grace's position would be heralded and the host would be made to apologize, rather than in those days when it was made out to be her being crazy. How much belittling and condescension is one expected to put up with? Another perfect example would be Michael Parkinson's interview with Helen Mirren in the 70s or 80s. At the time, nobody really noticed anything wrong with it and found Helen to be standoffish. Thankfully now we see how ridiculous his line of questioning was and he has even admitted himself that it was terribly sexist and misogynistic. It was just so common place at the time that people didn't notice it. And when people like Helen spoke up they were seen as trouble makers.

I'm a Scorpio and I am not surprised at all with the psychology in this video. Grace Jones blew the minds of everybody on the set especially interviewer Russell Harty. When the moon is in Scorpio all kinds of extremes can occur. Harty was about as arrogant as it can get with Grace so she delivered to him what he deserved - a jolly good old fashion GJ slapping to put him in his place. Grace Jones is so far ahead of her time here and she as per usual is all class. I rate Grace Jones one of the all-time greatest artistic music performers she is that classy.

I don't think anybody is ignoring the fact that she was not easy to interview here, she was sleep deprived (and for all we know, possibly high on something). But as an interviewer he did an awful job of managing that, instead choosing to belittle her to the other guests and be condescending towards her. We don't usually notice when guests are being like this because most hosts have the talent to manage the situation.
