Charted at #8 in July 1916. Recorded March 18, 1916. From the 1914 musical, "The Girl From Utah". Written by Herbert Reynolds and Jerome Kern. Sung by Mario Lanza and Kathryn Grayson in "That Midnight Kiss". Reed Miller also recorded as James Reed. "They Didn't Believe Me" also charted at #9 for Gladys Rice & Walter Van Brunt in January 1916 (which I've also posted) and #1 for Harry Macdonough and Olive Kline in November 1915. The other side of this record is "Kiss Me Again" by Grace Kerns.

This recording of “They Didn’t Believe Me” is impressive on multiple levels. Both singers deliver beautiful performances with skilled vocalizing and solid rhythm. The balance between the vocals and the orchestra is also excellent. The key of this performance - B-flat major - is higher than most published scores of this song, which are frequently found in G or A-flat major in modern sources. One wonders whether these performers could have had any notion that this song would stand the test of time and that, more than one hundred years later, their recording would continue to have an impact on today’s listeners.

Until comparatively recently I didn’t realise that the last song of the film Oh What a Lovely War was based on this original. Only when I saw it featured in the excellent series Boardwalk Empire was it clear

Thanks for mentioning Boardwalk. I couldn't remember where I had heard it in later years.

How refreshing to hear a song sung (and the music played) exactly as it was intended. I won't listen to anything that has been changed to suit the "mood" of the performer. A song should be sung as written.

Very nice. I don't think I have heard this version before. I do like the Harry MacDonough - Olive Kline version very much. (I think she's listed as Alice Green on that one, one of he pseudonyms...)
