Here's my review of Math With Confidence Grade 3. We're finishing up the year and I'm amazed at the simple and yet solid math fact practice we've received using this curriculum.
Kate Snow has made year 3 slightly differently than year 1 & 2, which I share in the video. It follows her same great style with a few slight changes to the "schedule" and goes from 2 to 3 pages/day...offering 1 additional page in the student book for the parent to complete with the student during the lesson using the teacher's guide.
Year 3 focuses heavily on multiplication (book A) and division (book B). I find my daughter still needs practice speeding up her math facts but I love that she's learning the why and not just to memorize math.
Watch video for slight differences between year 3 compared to 1 & 2.

Just a note on math facts, we took almost 6 months off of our math curriculum to do facts memorization. It was so helpful to have those down before jumping into level 4 math. It didn't put my son behind either, he was able to move very quickly once those facts were down. We were just finishing up division facts when we jumped back into end of 3rd grade/4th grade math.

I think that’s smart. I can totally see how one would slog through OR fly through year 4 equations and story problems depending on how well math facts are memorized.

This is so helpful and as I'm almost half way through first grade MWC. It's nice to see how things are later as we lay the foundation now. I am curious where to find the yearly math test online you were talking about. I would love to do something like this with mine.

It is called “Map” testing through homeschool boss (that’ll come up if you google it). It’s untimed, done at home, and there’s a reading, language, math, and optional science test (one subject each day). Results are given next day. I don’t know what the earliest grade they let you test for, but I’d say whenever they’re able to read the questions on their own (and some of the reading comprehension passages get long). My 1st grader did not test, but I did have my 3rd and 4th grader test this year, and as well as last year in 2nd and 3rd.

Im slogging through MWC 1, skipping much of the extras on the teachers Guide. Almost too many games... ive used various things from k thru 3rd with my oldest before landing on Saxon. So im stil torn on using MWC for 2 and 3. Great review thank you!

Thanks for sharing your experience! We skip things too if it seems too basic for where we’re at or if it’s too much game review. Can I ask how did Saxon go with your older child? I watched some reviews of people saying they liked the older grades 4 and up combined with Nicole the math lady subscription. We’re considering a change for my oldest because Singapore has been hard for me to teach to him.

We LOVE MWC! Although my daughter would make me play the games ALL day long if I let her 😆😆. I’ll be having my rising Kindergartener starting the program in the fall, so I’ll have 2 using different levels of the program. ❤

That’s awesome! Two levels is doable, and hopefully kinder is easy peasy since you’re used to how it works!

Thank you for your helpful review! Can you please share what online test you use for math benchmarking? Thanks so much!

It was Map testing via Homeschool Boss. If you google that it should pop up.

My daughter is a grade ahead of every year’s new grade level release. I so wish she could use MWC.

Same! What are you going with for her math for next year or what have you used so far?

@@LizBlueandHazel I have used Math U See for 5 years. I might just add a supplement or possibly do Christian Light Education. My daughter liked their Reading 4, and she asked to try it.

So my biggest thing for 3rd grade is the multiplication. Did you think the way that was taught was sufficient? Painful? I have done TGATB, and Math Mammoth for this grade, but for kid #3 I feel like I am still looking for the perfect multiplication program 😅
@LizBlueandHazel
@LizBlueandHazel 3 месяца назад
That’s a good q! I think that it taught multiplication pretty painlessly and gives tons of daily practice via games to review the math facts. She def teaches the concept of what is happening not just the algorithms, which is very similar to how my son was taught in Singapore Primary 2022, but MWC has done a much better job than Singapore at bringing in constant practice. I added in skip counting songs because I still use those as a grown up 😆 when I forget math facts but it’s not encouraged in this curriculum or Singapore. One thing my daughter didn’t like was how the curriculum forces you to use one multiple you know to figure out one you don’t. (It builds number sense but she didn’t like it) For example if you don’t know 6x6 then you could find 6x5 first and then add 6. It frustrated her to think that way and she’d rather just memorize. Hope that’s helpful!
