Thank you sooo much for this! We have been doing Good and Beautiful since Kindergarten with my oldest and she’s now 2nd grade and just 6 weeks in we are both miserable 😢 I researched and have been stuck choosing between Apologia and Math with Confidence and was leaning towards Apologia but waiting for confirmation before purchasing. Then I found your video which just solidified Apologia for me! One of the things frustrating me about good and beautiful was the way it’s sometimes worded can be hard to teach, and it seems like Math with Confidence is also difficult to read on the teachers end from other sample lesson videos I’ve seen. So I’m so happy to now feel more confident with Apologia! A friend of mine who is a high school math teacher, but is now homeschooling her young kids, recommended Apologia as well. Which also helps me feel good about it! Going to order it tonight! Thanks so much :)

I’m so glad this was helpful to you in making your choice! I also have another video reviewing level 3. We previously used The Good and The Beautiful math. The old version of that math was more hands on, but the newer version of that math just seemed very crowded and I didn’t love how some of the things were taught. My oldest daughter asked to drop level 5 last year and then we have since dropped all levels. I moved my middle into Apologia Math and my youngest to Math with Confidence. I wanted to love MWC but it was too much reading and it was hard for me to skim it quickly to teach the lesson, plus I always had to gather random things to teach. I love that Apologia has less clutter and the hands on activities help with the concepts so much. Make sure to check out the learning with apologia group on Facebook. Kathryn Gomes (Apologia math author) adds so many great tips in there.

Thanks for the look inside! I have been curious about Apologia also:) we enjoy MWC here- it took me bit to learn the flow of it but now it's easier to execute. You're correct that level 1 also has both back & front of work like apologia, rather than a single side like K, and I believe it's at level 3 that it moves up to 3 pages. We are lucky to have so many great options for math!

My older kids have used apologia 3 and now 4. They did TGTB before that. Apologia is such a breath of fresh air after TGTB. My youngest daughter is doing MWC level 1 and she gets bored and frustrated with how long the lesson from the teachers guide takes. She loves the workbook pages though. So planning to switch her over to Apologia as well this fall. Since it does a shorter activity and a bit longer of a lesson. I wanted to try MWC since it is so loved and I wanted to compare it to Apologia. I do feel like the MWC workbook pages are slightly more aesthetically pleasing though.

I agree with you! I didn’t love the teacher guide to MWC. We did like the workbook pages though. My daughter was bored. She repeated kindergarten, so we were moving pretty fast in level k and doing multiple lessons each day. I’m really glad I switched her to apologia mid first semester. She is doing level 1 with very little problems. My middle said she really liked Apologia too. I’m really glad we found Apologia! Thanks for taking the time to share your experience with it!

I have also found MWC extremely hard to follow. The lessons took us a very long time. Thanks for the review.

Yes! I feel that way too. I ended up scrapping MWC today to move into Apologia 1 with my kindergartner. She seemed so bored with MWC because she really know most of the things we were doing in lessons. She is technically repeating kindergarten so I don’t feel too bad about her starting level 1 Apologia. Thanks for watching!

I prefer AP over MWC as well! 😆I keep meaning to make a video about it but.

You are just slightly busy 😉 I am so glad we made the switch to Apologia for my 3rd grader! I actually had level 1 a few years ago that I won from the company but we were happy with TGTB math at the time and so I ended up giving it away to someone else. Now I wish I kept it!

I would love an updated video of how you are still liking it! I'm till trying to decide between these two.

I can definitely do a follow up, but I’ll quickly say…I switched my youngest to Apologia in the fall after using Math With Confidence since last spring with her. I didn’t love Math With Confidence’s teacher guide. And we didn’t love the activities in level k. Technically, she is repeating kindergarten so I’m not sure if she was just passed level K math with confidence, but we were both bored. I think level 1 apologia has definitely been more of a challenge for her and she is doing great with it. I have another video on Applogia with my 3rd grader and she is also loving it! We have plans to continue on to level 4 after we complete level 3. One thing to keep in mind is definitely look at the teacher guide in apologia if you get it to see the skills that you need to review each day. But the hands on/activities at the beginning of most lessons are so great with apologia.

@schultesweeties thank you for the reply! I've watched your 3rd grade video on apologia too 😂 I'm watching and rewatching RU-vid videos on both MWC and apologia math trying to decide 😅😬 My main hang up is I like how MWC uses the ten block paper chart thing to teach addition and subtraction vs apologia seems to use the drill and kill with flash cards and showing some visuals....? Does that seem accurate? My 1st grader is struggling to memorize his math facts (using CLE). Considering doing like another RU-vidr has done and use addition facts that stick along side apologia 2.

@@Emily_Rudolph I will say we have used the 10 frames often with learning addition and subtraction lately. But one thing I love is that we don’t always use it! There are some different ways that concepts are taught. And many times it is through games. We do use flash cards to help with reinforcement but I definitely don’t consider Apologia to be drill and kill. There is a schedule of what skills you should review in the teacher book and often times you can find free printables and games to use on their site to help with that.

@@Emily_Rudolph We're in the same place: I have a 1st grader doing CLE math who is having a hard time despite how slow and basic it is, and now i'm trying to decide between Apologia and MWC. We literally just started Addition Facts that Stick today 😆

How clear is the review you are supposed to do for each lesson? Is it in the teachers guide and are there ideas on how to review? Thanks for the great video!!
@schultesweeties
@schultesweeties 2 месяца назад
So the teachers guide tells you the concept to review each day, but it doesn’t necessarily give you the tools. Although, if you create an account once you purchase, you can have access to tons of sites and printables. I also just like either making my own problems up to review or using flash cards. There is also a review page at the end of every chapter or so to cover past concepts.

I think there are samples either on apologia, rainbow resources or Christianbook that you may be able to see. But it is more in the teachers guide like this: review multiplication facts of 9 or review telling time

I also struggle teaching math with confidence level K. The execution of the lesson is hard to do. Too much going on. My daughter loves it and has developed a deep understanding of math with it so I already have first grade ready for her, but I wish I would have found apologia first. This looks easier for the parent to teach. How long does a lesson take? Also is the scripted part in the student book?
@schultesweeties
@schultesweeties 10 месяцев назад
I have only taught apologia to my 3rd grader. Including the skills practice, the game or hands on and going through the lesson, I think it would likely only take us 20-30 minutes. The other day we did one super quick because it was an easier lesson for her. The scripted part is in the student book but it isn’t much to read really. It seems to just flow really nice from the hands on activity that introduces the topic to what you need to go over
