Another commander that loves Mutavault is Magda. "Whenever a Dwarf becomes tapped" really likes it when you have a land that is also a Dwarf. It's also generally good in Merfolk decks because it can randomly be a 5/5 islandwalker for effectively two mana.

Mutavault works as another solid backup egg to sacrifice in Atla Palani decks. Good for when you want to make a push with haste or a big baddie when you need another. 2 mana and negging a land for a titan Eldrazi or Avacyn is always clutch.... Also Umezawa's Jitte has a nice little home in my Licia voltron deck. Many cards buff her with double strike for quick player removal and the life gain synergizes quite well.

Grim hierling is an A+ imo. If you can hit each of your opponents it makes up to 6 treasures. And it basically can function as the removal on umizawa's jitte. It can consistently murder 2/2's and if your built around it like in a prosper deck it's just spot removal on a stick that gets around indestructible and can't be countered only redirected.

Hi guys! Happy to see my bell icon with your video as always! As I mostly play predominantly commander decks I agree with your rating of D+ to Beanstalk Giant.. For me B. Giant looks like a mini card advantage card as it does 2 things but the Opportunity Cost of not using other ramp cards instead of this sure is hard to justify especially on decks that don't care about big creatures.. Also love how you rate cards not just on how it looks like on the bubble but also considering the edh environment, other cards and your personal experiences as well.. @mightyone3737
@mightyone3737 2 года назад
Yep, the land entering untapped is a big deal sometimes, not many ramp spells get untapped lands for you to work with. It's like if Wood Elves was instead a giant, and in any deck that expects to hit reasonably high land counts (and needs both ramp spells and creatures) it plays fine. It's probably best suited to decks that are a 3-6, so it makes sense if a High Power centric show would rate the card badly, it's out of it's element there. I think I've cast it as a creature, but it's not unusual to not need it, and you just had a 3 mana ramp spell that you could maybe double spell with, and it's a dirt cheap card fwiw. I only run it in my mono-Green beaters, and have never felt the need to add it to any of my other Green decks (I only have the 1 copy tbh), but now that I think of it, it might make sense in my Gruul Eldrazi, where I'd care about both the body and run at least some other land ramping spells/effects.

The F grade is pretty harsh for Mutavault. It is very easy to build around so I would personally give it at least a C-. F just makes it sound like it's totally unplayable, this is an untapped land with upside. The fact that it's tribal doest even matter, the point is it's a land that can turn into a creature. Are you saying every other land that turns into a creature is an F as well? Because as far as those go this one is quite efficient.

One time I was playing my Captain Sisay deck and had a huge board of creatures including Avacyn, Angel of Hope, Ulamog the Ceaseless Hunger with Eldrazi Consciption on it, and Odric, Lunarch Marshall to spread around all the good keywords. I went for an alpha strike and my opponenets didn't have much on the board so I was sure the game was over... but I happened to be playing against Sisay, Weatherlight Captain, and that player had 5 mana open, and was able to tutor Massacre Girl into play in the middle of combat, which killed all my huge indestructible creatures and basically took me out of the game because I had committed so much to the board and lost the best creatures in my deck without any way of getting them back in the near future of that game. I was pretty much flabbergasted because at that time I had forgotten that Massacre Girl even existed but in that moment it was literally the perfect answer and I don't think there are any other cards that could have been tutored out with Sisay, Weatherlight Captain at that moment that would have been that effective. So now I have a lot of respect for Massacre Girl, which looks like a mediocre card, but can have an incredibly high impact in the right situation.

I threw Jitte into a Lurrus deck with a little bit of an equipment theme (intentionally nerfed that way to take a break from Lurrus going infinite easily all the time), and while it was never incredible it always performed better that I expected it to. It was really just thrown in because it’s such a sweet card in vintage cube and stuff, but I think the pump meant a little more because of Lurrus’ lifelink as well. Between that and Blackblade Reforged it wasn’t uncommon to kill players with Lurrus commander damage which is always unexpected. Plus if they wrath the board you just cast Lurrus again, cast Puresteel Paladin from the graveyard and reequip everything. Pretty sweet deck.

Thanks for the video! To play devils advocate on some of the lower ratings: Autumn's veil sees play at cEDH level, but yes TBF it's not going to be as relevant at kitchen tables. Mishra's factory has a place in Darreti or other artifacts matters decks. Also manlands have utility. E.g. hold two mana for your counterspell, then if ou don't end up needing it; you can simply pay one in your opponents end step to turn it into an Artifact creature then tap it to put a counter on it (many decks are find to hold up two mana), do that 2+ times then you have a relevant creature that also doesn't die to a board wipe.... mutavault in Omnath (rage) has tremendous utility). Retrofitter factory is expensive b/c low supply (as mentioned) and it goes infinite with infinite mana...but who does that, right? Jitte is medocre to bad in a vacuum but goes well in proliferate decks, consistently having 6+ counters on this is relevant.

Grim hireling says "Whenever one or more creatures..." so doesn't that mean it only makes 2 treasure tokens at most per attack? Even if you Hit 3 opponents at the same time, Grim Hireling will only make 2 tokens as it says "one or more creatures" rather than "Whenever a creature.."
@tactiCole_
@tactiCole_ 2 года назад
I think the part to look at is "a player" - so in Commander this potentially makes 6 in a turn if you deal damage to 3 other players. If you hit a single player with 5 creatures, it only makes 2 treasure, but if you hit 3 players with 1 each it will make 6. I was confused when I first read it too, the "one or more creatures" part is so you don't make 2 treasures per creature.

Okay I have some solid card ideas and questions from my personal favorite WB sacrifice blink deck!! I'd love to hear your thoughts on them (but for some of them I just wanna rant about what I think are some of the secret gods of commander) :DD DEMON OF DARK SCHEMES - I personally love the nether out of this card? Genuinely great, it does hit the whole board but that also makes it an alternate sac outlet and gives you cheap graveyard wins? I don't know about you guys but I'd honestly put this at like B- or B - not quite hyperbusted but I've honestly used this as an alternative to Meathook Massacre with some dang good results (granted I play Tokens so it usually hits my creatures too) VARRAGOTH, BLOODSKY SIRE - Every time he attacks, you get a bootleg Demonic Tutor that instead of drawing, goes to the top of your deck. I don't know how many games I've won literally ONLY because of this fool - I would love to hear your opinion but to me he should be in every black deck ever, and him as a commander would only be more horrifying. Side note - I expect his price to DRASTICALLY increase once people realize just what he can do for a game. A- or A without question, best tutor effect I've ever seen (and I do have demonic tutor in this deck too) -Buy him while he's 2 bucks, use him in your black deck, and if anyone else plays him first kill Varragoth on sight. Aetherworks Marvel - THIS is also one of my personal favorites. Sacrifice something? Get energy. Lose something? Get energy. Get too much energy? Tap it and get some random super-strong BS for free. Goes *really* well with sacrifice decks. I'd say it's like a C for most decks, but if you see it in a Black deck it shoots up to a B+ almost immediately, destroy it the moment it hits the board. Strionic Resonator - I find this kind of niche honestly, this may just be like a D / a card I need to replace. In a blink deck it's really cute because you can just pay two and tap it to duplicate a crucial ETB (aka my good old Abhorrent Overlord :D), but if you're not hitting exactly that kind of instant-win ETB effect it just sits there and does nothing. There MIGHT be a nutty combo i missed though. Spoils of Blood - the biggest "frick-you" combination you're ever going to see, a boardwipe and this sack of peanuts. One cost instant that turns any boardwipe into Phyrexian Horror II; Electric Boogaloo. In a sacrifice decks the token(s) work as meatshields and in other decks the horror works as a trample/haste target. I'd say it's a C- because the token doesn't get trample / haste on its own but it's still a very nice "emergency cheese button". Sacrifice - Combo city. An old spell (so old that it was called an interrupt instead of an instant) that sacs a creature and gives you its casting cost back as black mana - aka it's what would happen if Dark Ritual actually did something for your combos / blink decks! Strict upgrade to Dark Rit, I'd say it's around a C because of its pure combo potential and emergency value saving. Not a well known black staple, but it should be used over DR if your deck has any sort of graveyard or sacrifice games. There might be more eventually but I figured I'd drop these and rant about my favorite cards! I'd love to see you do a vide on them!

Joe, you're such a chad for having Stolen Goods as one of your favourite cards. I think that your friend who thinks pulling Divine Intervention off is a win is silly; if I had to deal with that, I'd probably be lower on the card too. That being said, I don't think drawing the game is so bad? It's one of the few ways White actually has to swiftly close out a game, and I'm not any more bothered by it than I am two card comboes (and Divine Intervention, like you said, is not a very good card). I know it's not winning but I don't really view that as breaking the social contract or whatever. Feels like a lot of the issue people have is just with the phrasing of draw, whereas if it was "everyone wins" people would complain less. I'm higher on Mutavault than you guys but I think the problem is a lot of the Tribal decks that need Changelings benefit off of Cast/ETB triggers, neither of which Mutavault offers which is...kind of a problem! Umezawa's Jitte isn't great but it's so cool that it works with Tetsuko Umezawa, so I'd always play it in that deck even though it does almost nothing for that deck (minus a few incidental synergies). For four mana you could probably do better but I guess you could use it in Rafiq? Or Balan? Regardless of our opinions on cardboard though, still enjoyed the video (and this series TBH) and appreciate the daily content!

Chains and Zur go really well with Teferi's Puzzle Box and Necropotence, it's an old competitive combo, viable since the day Zur was printed. It's clunky now, but it's still a lock that can be further protected (IE Zur can dig out Shroud for all the pieces involved, and can win via Voltron). Very high consistency for that deck, but not especially powerful. Autumn's Veil is a fine card in Green decks that need heaps of interaction (yet are stuck in mono Green), outside those fairly high power metas that crawl with interaction/counters it's a terrible card obviously. Veil drawing you a card is very minor compared to the effect of the card at higher level, it's the protection that matters, especially in a colour that is openly bad at interacting with the stack. It's also reasonable as a budget Flusterstorm, provided you have enough other interaction to hold this until later. It's a mono-Green card, and that will hurt it's ranking (IE very few decks need it). Mindslicer is all fun and good, but Tainted Specter can lock a player out of their normal draw, which is funny even for a heap of mana, so if your deck would prefer to do 'wtf!' level stuff over win, Specter is very fun. It's also a board pinger, so you can really hose a tokens deck I guess? Apparently Mutavault and stuff like it can be handy if you've got copy effects, if you copy the creature, you get a land, which can still become a creature in a pinch. This is obviously pretty situational, but in a deck that is trying to push it's versatility of effect (and likes creatures), Factory or a Nexus can offer you what you want. If you are just going to throw a manland into a deck that has no need for it, it'll play badly most of the time. Retrofitter Foundry is a very cuttable card in most decks, but in decks that really like tokens, it's a good card (that still feels a lot worse than something like Urza's Saga, which can give you 2 better tokens on the cheap, and can turn into a Sol Ring), but it's not even worth $10 in Commander. There are considerably *better* colourless infinite mana outlets, Staff of Domination is much cheaper and openly much better in Commander. Foundry is exactly like Jitte, it's too small for Commander, the same reason Dark Confidant doesn't see all that much play, even at higher levels (it sees some, but it's not an auto in cEDH decks with black), getting 1 card per turn can feel too small in a 4 player game. Archetype of Imagination gives your board flying (and takes it away from opponents). It was a bad 'hit' in my Polymorph deck until I replaced it, I *think* with Sphinx of the Second Sun, which is one of the most absurd cards in a Polymorph deck. I think it's too much mana, and the body is too small, but it is funny if you can Polymorph out both it and Stormtide Leviathan (until someone combos off and wins because you're busy building a pillow-fort).

I play both Beanstalk Giant and Leyline of Anticipation in my Rashmi, Eternity Crafter deck. Since Rashmi triggers once PER TURN, I want to be able to cast cards on other players' turns and Beanstalk Giant ramps me (getting land out of the deck because I want to cast free spells, not draw lands) AND it costs 7 mana when I cast Beanstalk Giant, which will make it easier to hit a lower cost card. I want to ramp into big, expensive spells to freecast my other stuff. What I do is play cards that have a lower alternative cost with a higher mana value. So cards with evoke and mutate let me cast stuff for less but still trigger Rashmi and hit lower cost cards. Combine that with scry effects to stack my deck.

And it does destroy all "other creatures" while only requiring that you cast it from you hand (so you can't flicker it or reanimate it) and that there be "5 other creatures" on the battlefield. 7 mana 5/6 flying dragon.

Joe, the probability of drawing 1 particular card in your opening hand is only a little more than 7%. It's equivalent to 7/99 which is 7.0707...% So I'd say Beezy was right about Leyline.

Your just WRONG Pissing off every one at the table IS the goal in magic ( some times called winning ) Diving Intervention does this more then most other cards. It’s A++ slam it the dare the board to stop you. Run with hexmage and do it instantly Run with proliferate or bounce/blink and keep the threat alive at your leisure.

I have a super weird niche use for Autumn's Veil in a Codie deck. It either eats up a counter from my opponents or makes the 0 CMC mana spell I "cascade" into effectively uncounterable. Veil of Summer is still much, much better (and Autumn should still probably get an F), but the $7 difference in price between them I'd rather invest somewhere else.

I don't think you guys understand Umezawa's Jitte... SUUUPER underestimated it. It doesn't have to hit a player, just deal damage. It can also be activated at instant speed on other people's turns outside of combat. Huge miss on the power or usefulness. This card is bonkers in lots of decks.
@marimi46

One note about Inkshield is that unlike other fogs it only prevents combat damage to you, and so if someone is doing a big lethal swing across the board with whatever they're trying to do, your other two opponents will get knocked out regardless, and so even if all of those inklings get boardwiped post combat, you still saved yourself while two other players were taken out. Granted, Teferi's protection would do the same thing, but Inkshield has that capability of giving you that giga army. Fun card! Also, Stolen Goods is pretty good in Umbris!

If you built and optimized or higher Hamza +1/+1 counter discount deck then Beanstalk giant would be playable then but I wouldn’t put it in mine. I just play a bunch of creatures and turn them all onto forests lands with ashaya and then ashaya is huge. There’s also a creature I used to have whose power was the combined mana value of all creatures you control and it’s power was never less than 40 in a deck like Hamza.

I am a big fan of Inkshield, specifically in your aristocrat decks. I have this in a Mardu aristocrat control deck that plays cards like impact tremors and purphoros god of the forge. Holding up five mana is hard.. Buttt, if you have some sneaky ways to quickly gain mana from sacrificing some of your own creatures, this card becomes so brutal! I recently played this and was able to get 15 creatures and deal 45 damage to each of my opponents from this card alone. not every deck will want it, but it is so fun when it works

I have won several games because of inkshield. It depends on your playgroup and if they play a lot of combat decks. It literally fogs them from over exerting their attack and then they lose on the crack back. Its also good because it lets damage kill your opponents just not you. I agree it can sit in your hand and 5 mana is a lot but id give it a B(B-). Id consider more as a FLYING token army in a can at instant speed than an expensive fog.

2/2 double strike commander with jitte kills in two turns. Turn one is 2x2 =4, turn two is 2x10=20 for a total of 24. After that the math gets wonky but you can save extra counters for removal

I have a massacre girl commander deck and it's so fun. It's not just constantly flickering her, I instead play her to cause a huge chain reaction to deal a ton of damage to all my opponents. She is like a fuze for dynamite and all my little 1/1's and aristocrat effects are the bomb itself. As long as I pack enough gun powder in there I'm going to win.

I feel like grading cards in this manner and how other channels also do is probably one of the bigger contributors to the homogenization of decks within the format. Grading cards as being the best of what they do because they're generic applicability to any deck that could host them leads to these generic shells of what a deck could look like that's pre-built with most of the things taken care of and then maybe 20 flex or flavor spots. Not complaining or saying this is bad just kind of thinking out loud in text form

I am sorry but I completely disagree with your take on Divine Intervention. Yeah you are right, technically it is a draw, but I am still considering it a personal victory. If I end the game the way my deck is intended to I am chalking that up as a win in my book. I have a mono green control deck whos main win cons are Hurricane type effects and I end most games with that deck in a draw with Hurricane where x= the highest total. Sure there are ways I could technically win like if I have a Glacial Chasm out, but if I kill everyone at once, I consider it a victory. Awesome video guys, love this content. Any more plans for battle box videos in the future?

Divine intervention was actually once a valid play. There was a stax player who tapped out for one turn, enchantment came in, nobody wanted to sit around the table for the next 5 hours, except the stax player who tried to pop it twice. I myself used a spell which's name I've forgotten to give it hexproof shroud or protection until end of turn even though it was not my permanent. I just wanted to spite that stax player. Game ended in a draw

In the latest command zone podcast they point out that you can use mutavault to "ramp", because you will get another mutavault when you clone the creature. Not very strong, but maybe viable in a clone deck? Idk but interesting nonetheless :D

Tbh it feels like the grade on the Jitte is based on your meta rather than the base value of the card, which is fair. The pump effect is often what people look to, but the removal aspect, as well as the fact that it can be activated even when it's not equipped is undervalued. As many low stat utility creatures and low stat value commanders that get out of hand as there are, it's really good in aggro decks that need some way of keeping the board in check. But, at the end of the day, it kills Volo, and that's all that matters.

Mutavault is good if you’re playing Orvar, because then you can animate it, cast one of your blue target spells and clone your mutavault so you have a new one that isn’t a creature yet, and you can just ramp. You could also clone it with phantasmal image.

Disagree your assessment on Jitte. It has instant speed interaction after combat and counters can be gained in first strike phase to manipulate combat outcomes. It's just block at your own risk or just give me counters.

I disagree with autmms veil I run it in my Yisan cedh deck and its definately not as good as veil of summer but it keeps your commander on the field for 1 mana. Its still great. Maybe niche cus Yisan doesnt care about the opportunity cost too much he just needs to stick. Run both cards in green heavy commander reliant decks.
