Providing an overview of the restoration of this Grady White Seafarer. Purchased in 2017 with a blown motor. Restored from summer 2017 until spring of 2018.
I walk through the restoration elements and how my Dad and I brought this boat back to life. We really enjoy this boat. Very seaworthy. Reliable. A ton of usable space! I challenge you to find a 22' boat with as much room for fishing. Today's boats have stuff in the way!

Sir, you are an inspiration ! You have made a miraculous update to your boat. My 1985 Seafarer 226 is still original with the transom cutout because I'm not much of a project guy. But I love how your modification worked out. In particular, it adds over a foot of length to the cockpit with easier access to the rear swim platform/engine mount. That could be a really nice location for a bait prep/filet table that could double as a kitchenet for overnighting. We usually put the porta potty back there when overnighting in the cabin. I have considered raising the windshield too but found it was simpler to just add large clear plastic swing down "sun visors". These are hinged to the hard top instrument cabinet to serve as wind and spray shield when needed. Just keep them well coated in RainX. We can raise or lower the seat to get optimum visibility. This preserves the lines of the boat which are still great looking and continued on Grady Whites newest models.

Thanks for commenting! It was a labor of love and a great project. Not sure if you saw all the steps, but it was intense. :) I enjoyed using the boat but I did sell it last year. Our family's interests changed and I saw declining use. It was hard to see the boat sit. I found a couple who were downsizing from a 36' boat and then fell in love with the Grady. I have no regrets. Resurrected a classic and while maintaining some classic features, I also made it into something with excellent performance.

@@ModernCountryLiving I wish I had your ambition and your heated workshop. But these boats are pretty good as originally fit out and mine is not in bad shape. So no burning motivation. But what you did is a real accomplishment and actually seems the equal of their latest models. Her name really fits.

Awesome! I looked at a 24 offshore several years ago. It was sitting on an old trailer along the road for sale. It was full of water to the deck. Really sad. I wanted that boat pretty bad, but the guy wanted $7500. I couldn't justify that cost, but really liked it. I think the 24 would be a great boat. There are folks that say the older Grady's aren't worth much, don't have the new hull design, etc. They are WRONG! This boat runs fantastic and is secure. Trolling - very stable. Not rolling around. Good luck! Thanks for watching my videos.

Shawn Gross it was a great surprise. I was speechless! Hey - I do have a quick question about the tackle storage under the seats that I believe you said your Dad built. Those are fantastic! Any insight that you can offer into materials used, did he start from scratch or did he work with something commercially available and build upon it?, etc. Any info would be greatly appreciated! Thanks again!

@@josephmicara5708 I have been really struggling to find the windshield components. Taylor Made and others want a king's ransom to build a new windshield system. It's not that difficult or large, but finding the aluminum extrusions needed is impossible. I've even tried contacting aluminum extrusion manufacturers and they only want to deal with selling 1000's of pounds.... I will definitely do a video if I come up with a solution.

Thank you for the video. I just got my 2000 Grady white 226 back from the boat shop. We installed a new Yamaha 250, fiberglass the back just like yours with a new aluminum bracket. I noticed the motor is pretty deep in the water. How is your motor hight any issues? Did you have any problems with the height of the motor and performance ? I am more than happy to share pictures and videos. It looks like we both went through the same project however you did a lot more. I did actually end up cutting out all the compartments in the back and moving the batteries upfront to open up a lot more fishing space in the back.

That's a sickkkk resto man. I'm working on restoring a Sportcraft 270 right now (new stringer design, etc). I'm also on Lake Erie Central basin out of Lorain. What part of Erie are you fishing? There truly aren't much better boats for that dangerous of a lake, than Grady's with that high sweeping bow and wide base. Great job man!
@ModernCountryLiving
@ModernCountryLiving 3 года назад
Thank you. I am out of Erie, PA. I trailer, so I am primarily out of Lampe Marina. Yes, the GW has a nice bow flare. It's still a 22' boat, so it won't take you 30mph through the tight chop of Lake Erie in 4' waves. But, I feel safe and secure in it. I am thankful to be able to own it and enjoy it with my Dad.

Best 24 ft restored Grady out there, no new Grady is better. And new power = new boat. The hardtop frame is massive and I would say it’s not original. May I ask who fabricated it?
@ModernCountryLiving
@ModernCountryLiving 4 года назад
She's a 22 footer....I am very pleased with her! The hardtop is from WMW Marine who makes the original ones. I believe it was added later in the life of the boat but it is what Grady would have installed.

Great job! I’m doing a 1990 seafarer. I was fortunate enough to find one with the hull and transom in flawless condition. I rewired mine also , not fun. When you reglazed your windows did you mask it off and just use black silicone? What did you do about the inside weather strip around the windows in the cuddy? I can’t find that material. Thanks for any guidance you can offer . Also where did you move your fuel tank? Thanks

@ModernCountryLiving 3 года назад
Thanks for watching the videos! I made them because I couldn't find any and I believed people would enjoy them and use them to do their own restoration projects. Mission Accomplished! I bought TOTALBOAT deck paint. I give it a "B+" for performance. It has anti skid in it. That's nice. But, it's a challenge to scrub clean. It will scratch over time. The good thing: easy to repaint.

How are you doing with the front windshield design? I am also trying to find a solution. I was thinking about framing it a few legs with stainless steel then fiberglass year frame and popping in windshields to have a nice clear view. But that is going to cost me big it’s another project itself. Almost like building a pilot house.

Back then GW did not include sealed flotation foam?
@ModernCountryLiving
@ModernCountryLiving 4 года назад
Not sure what you're asking. Yes...there is foam in the boat. I added additional buoyancy with the bracket to increase the boat's capacity for carrying the extra weight of the outboard.
@robertp7209
@robertp7209 4 года назад
The closed cell spray in foam is under the fixed floor sections of the cockpit. To the port and starboard side of the gas tank. Perhaps some under the gunnels. Look up Brian Lynn, he did a 20 ft Grady center console where is pulled the entire liner out, you will see where exactly the factory foam was sprayed in.

I did my best to attempt to translate and understand your question. The motor is mounted such that the cavitation plate is higher than the bottom of the boat. A rule of thumb is 1" higher for every 1 foot of setback. I hope this helps.
