I have a young plum tree (main trunk about 1" across) where half the branches died off (unknown reason) There is one healthy looking branch left. Can I take a bud off this branch and graft it on the main trunk, to effectively even up the eventual fruit tree?

No way you can go wrong with this type of video, whether you are a beginner, an intermediate, or an expert. Smart use of a single scion for multiple grafts 👍🏾. That was what enabled me to go 50 in a single day.

Last year I watched your videos, then got some tools, equipement, and scions and did some grafting. You made it look so easy, I was not prepared for how much learning and practice was required, LOL. But your teaching was very good, and I got almost complete success ratio. One whip and tonque didn't take because I was impatient and tried to take the tape off too soon. Thanks for making these very good videos! I'm working on an apple espalier this year.

Nice work! I have to put a disclaimer on my videos, like the one on the rear view mirrors (objects might be closer than they appear). In grafting, practice is everything. Some of my early grafting work wasn't as smooth, although it worked, nevertheless...Good luck, with your espalier tree and thanks for the comment.

@@JSacadura thank you for great video content. Its my second time i tried to graft apples this spring. Plum and pear tree too. First time it didnt work well - it was already too warm and dry. This time it seemed to me seedlings(small trees grown from seeds) to graft were still dormant but i had to take the risk and grafted them. Weather is warm enough, its wet and all the bigger trees in the garden are already sprouting. So excited to see the results in a few weeks. Its even pleasure to watch the videos, i am so much into it. Thanks again!

Thank you for the quality of your videos, I wouldn't like to repeat but they're really the best I could find on RU-vid. I have a great doubt about the best and precise moment for grafting, depending on the technique. For example for the three methods you reported here in this video when do I have the highest probability of success? When the buds start moving, when they start opening, when they've already opened, when the bark is getting slippery? I also wonder, in general, if I have the possibility of choosing when is the best moment for grafting: early spring, when the temperatures are getting warmer, late spring... Thank you very much for everything!

@@JSacadura I know what you mean. I tried making a few videos but with my 50-60 hour a week job and all the stuff that needs to get done in the yard it’s difficult for me to set up everything to film anything in particular, especially since I tend to jump from thing to thing sometimes without finishing the last project before the next starts, haha. I seriously enjoy your videos. You do such a great job filming, editing, and narrating them, they are a joy to watch.

Thank you so much for these great videos ! I have learned so much from your videos that I feel more confident on grafting than rooting my fig tree collection! Im having about 95% success rate on my grafts , on the other hand I am having about same rate of success on rooting but than when transplanting the rooted cuttings about 15-20% of them fail. Because of the grafts that I learn to do from your videos, I saved some very expensive scions that I failed to successfully root. Thank you so much again, and please keep them coming!
@JSacadura
@JSacadura 3 года назад
That was the main reason I invested time in grafting fig trees when, in most forums, people said they had poor results, specially when using whip and tongue. Now, if I want to be sure that I can keep a rare variety, instead of rooting I graft it and whip and tongue is the first technique I use if the scion allows it. The occasional failure is extremely rare and often due to scions in poor condition, to begin with.

My favorite grafting videos, but after trying the techniques, I find that he needs to add: "If blood flow is excessive, quickly wipe it off to avoid contaminating the cambian layer. After securing the graft, use a circular motion to wrap at least half of your wounds with paraffin to restrict blood flow, being careful not to wrap too much, as you probably have at least 6 remaining fingers and one thumb left and will need the rest of the tape for remaining grafts until late spring."

LOL. I’m currently wearing a band-aid on one finger because I grafted a peach scion the other day with my fancy saddle grafting tool, and didn’t notice that one finger was between the scissor blades while I focused on the saddle cutting blade. Oopsie! Apparently grafting can be dangerous even when no knife is involved.

@JSacadura
@JSacadura 3 года назад

Wow, this is the best YT grafting technique that I have ever seen. Your bud cutting sizes is so perfect match. I've fail all early spring grafting in three year in a row. I'm so impress with your grafting. I could not cut the same sizes whip tongue were the cambium to match on my jujube tree . perhaps 1)I did not cut deep enough, 2) can't find parafilm at homedepot or Lowe, i use electrical tape or plastic bag to wrap 3) I did not unwrap the electrical tap after 2 weeks, i expect the bud to shoot out of the electrical tap. Wait 2 month hoping for amiracle. Maybe the tape is too thick. I have watch other youtube vedio say ok to use electrical tape bc it sticks together best. Thank you for sharing your talent to the world, I' m amazed.
@JSacadura
@JSacadura 3 года назад
1- Practice is the key to make straight cuts that will match and improve your success ratio. 2- Parafilm can be bought from Amazon - Search "Parafilm Nursery Grafting Tape" - from Bemis. Its not cheap but its worth it. 3- Covering the buds with tape is not a good idea, as they can't break it and they will die (parafilm is a special wax based tape that the buds break easily). if you have to use electrical tape, don't cover the buds (when chip-budding) and don't cover the buds above the graft union (when using other techniques, like whip and tongue) and you will be fine. Thanks for the comment.

What technique do you recommend when the scion is larger in diameter than the rootstock? Btw. thanks for all your content, it's very informative.
@JSacadura
@JSacadura 3 года назад
You can try a Z-Graft. Its similar to the modified cleft graft but you make similar cuts in both the scion and the rootstock (the flap on the scion covers the top of the rootstock). main contact is done on the back cuts on both the scion and the rootstock. Apart from that not much will work, but you can always try to remove a few buds from the scion and use them with a bud-grafting technique.
