Great job Steven...interesting species of apple and one I have not heard about before ! I recently purchased a grafting tool and will "give it a go" this spring ! The "Changing" weather has definitely "shown its face" here in zone 6A (And everywhere else in the world as well) and I actually planted 1 whole month early in 2018 and was "lucky" not to have succumbed to that pre-memorial day frost..."Bumper crop" ! Can"t wait till spring and begin the "process" again !

thank you for explaining how to graft, that was very good explaining, could you tell, me where did you buy the parafilm, is it sticky on one side so when you wrap it on the graft it sticks to it or is it just stretchy tape.good luck with your grafting. I appreciate your answer. thank you.

Ooh nice tip thank you! Would help increase chances of survival. Just like when pruning trees it's a good idea to cleanse the shears before moving on to the next tree to prevent spread of disease.

can I ask why the grafted rooting stocks are not placed into water right away instead of into the dry wood shavings.? would you want to hydrate the rooting stocks as soon as you can to improve the chance of success ?

Great question. Either by air layering or even easier, take a dormant cutting in winter and stick it in some potting soil. Keep it moist and it will root and sprout leaves in spring/summer. I'll be putting out another video on propagation by cutting. Then you'll know how to create new trees from basically any type of tree, vine or herb :)

hmmm have some questions, can i graft a rooting Guava tree to a fruiting Apple tree? or can i only graft the same type of tree? and why graft? will it fruit earlier than it suppose to? or just to have a different type of fruit? or is there any more powerful benefit? and Paul Gautschi from the back to eden gardening grafts with black tape, would you reccomend that, or is this a new information? thank you, great video as always. keep inspiring people :)
@NaturesAlwaysRight
@NaturesAlwaysRight 6 лет назад
Thanks Ano I'll try my best! You can't graft a guava to an apple rootstock. Has to be the same type of tree. Rootstocks are bred to be rootstocks for specific species or varieties of trees/plants of the same families. So pome fruit rootsock with pome fruit scion wood. Stone fruit with stone fruit. We graft to guarantee genetics of the fruit we want. By seed takes years and does not guarantee a fertile or good tasting fruit. I'm not sure what the black tape is but I doubt it matters much, which tape you use. I don't like the sound of black because that attracts heat. I recommended what I believe to be the best based on the local experts who taught me and I have personally had great success with.

I would add that grafting is also another way to protect your planting investment . Fireblight is a major problem for some varieties of pears. So if im going to plant a suseptible variety like a Forelle, I graft an "interstem" of a non-suseptible variety between the rootstock and the Forellle branches. That way if fireblight kills off my Forelle branches I still have my back up variety (anjou)that has been growing along with the tree.
@mikeld1455
@mikeld1455 6 лет назад
Also you can play around with rootstocks to change the growing characteristics of your tree. Some rootstocks can intentionally dwarf the size of your tree. My cherry growing friends do this a lot in order to reduce the need for ladders when harvest roles around.
@NaturesAlwaysRight
@NaturesAlwaysRight 6 лет назад
Mikel D Nice! That's a great point amd strategy.
@anofritz
@anofritz 6 лет назад
Nature's Always Right thank you for the answer, i now understand that i can only graft the sane type of tree. oh that's a very great reason, so i understand that grafting saves time and also ensures that i have the fruit that i want, from another, former tree. ahh, okay i won't use black tape then. thank you very much :)

I have never grafted anything before but I've watched several videos and one of the guys said that you never do the split down the middle you do it off center just a little but I don't know and I don't know if it makes a difference either just saying great video though thanks

你所使用的嫁接方式應該是割接(Cleft grafting),而不是楔接(Wedge grafting)、倒鞍接(Inverted shaddle grafting)。

Can these principles be used on an existing tree branch to produce a tree that bears 2 different kinds of fruits on one tree? And IF so, must they be of the same "kinds" of fruits? Could you graft, for example, a pear tree onto an existing apple tree or must it be say, 2 different varieties of apples...such as a Granny Smith onto a Red Delicious tree? Since you said that after the graft would be the kind of tree it will become, and you didn't use an apple tree as the root stock. That suggests that is could be possible. Also, If using branches as small as you used in this video, would a scalpel or an exacto knife work? They are extremely sharp, but they also tend to have rather thin blades!
@NaturesAlwaysRight
@NaturesAlwaysRight 5 лет назад
Yes you can do what you are describing, as long as the rootstock and fruiting stock are compatible it will work. So pom fruits with pom fruits, stone fruits with stone fruits, etc. For multi-grafts they can be done a myriad of ways, before the root stock is planted or a few years after the tree is established. The wedge graft is one of the ways, a bud graft is another, bark graft is another. I've never done more advanced grafts though, only the wedge. Yes some people use exacto knives to make the cut, try it out and see how you like the control of the cut, I've only tried larger flat blades. Multi grafts are really cool, I had a rootstock this year that had a y-split so I grafted two types of apple to the same root stock using the method in this video. Good luck on yours!
@alexriddles492

What you are suggesting is possible. I have 5 apple trees that bear 12 different varieties. There are several things to be cautious about. First, timing is critical. With an established tree you want to do the grafting in early spring just before the buds begin to swell. At this time of year the tree is putting its energy into the bark the sap is rising. You sometimes hear people talking about the bark slipping. This is the ideal time to graft. The second thing is the age of the branch you are grafting onto. It should be last year's growth. The bark will be a little greener. If you trace the branch back toward the trunk you will find a place where there are several rings in the bark around the branch. This marks the end of one years growth and the beginning of the next. I have never had a graft take on two year old wood. On last year's growth I'm about 80%. As for different kinds of fruit, they must be of the same species. If you find the botanical (latin) name of the fruit it is obvious what is compatible. For example all apples and crab apples are of the species Malus and can be grafted. However, pears are of the species Pyrus and would not be compatible with an apple. The species Prunus includes peaches, apricots, plums, cherries, and almonds. So these are all potentially compatible. I have a plum that bears three different varieties and I have grafted plums onto a cherry tree.

Can a tree while it's in air layering have grafts added on? Then when ready to prune be planted and live?
@NaturesAlwaysRight
@NaturesAlwaysRight 5 лет назад
I'm not 100% sure on that but I would guess that is not a good idea. The cutting already has to heal and root the air layer, then you are forcing it to do that in another or multiple areas, all from stored energy. But go for it and experiment ;)

@@NaturesAlwaysRight is it illegal to graft / air layer a tree / plant in CA?
@NaturesAlwaysRight
@NaturesAlwaysRight 5 лет назад
@@thomasthurman2723 No not at all, and I wouldn't follow any law that said I couldn't. It's nature. The actual law is related to intellectual property protection of certain modern cultivars and crosses like Apriums (cotton candy). So you can't graft and sell patented cultivars.
@thomasthurman2723
@thomasthurman2723 5 лет назад
@@NaturesAlwaysRight can you use muiti-graft scenarios to both trees/pants and sell? Or Use different layering scenarios ... Etc. Sell ... I know you can buy things and if you can make it and sell it just like them without have to having permits and or license to do so. ... I understand how it all works (I'm no professional, just love it and enjoy seeing it done) just don't know if it's legal or not?
@NaturesAlwaysRight
@NaturesAlwaysRight 5 лет назад
@@thomasthurman2723 Yes of course, but you can not sell if any part of it is a patented cultivar, which not many are. If using patented cultivar for personal non-commercial use then I believe it legal. Just like you can record a TV show but not sell that recording. You've got to think beyond "Legality." Slavery was legal, putting Jews on trains was legal, putting the Japanese in internment camps was legal. Following government law does not equal morality, usually it's quite the opposite.

I got the graft cutting tool that is supposed to make the perfect v cut into root stock and the perfect wedge on the scion. I did everything like I thought but none of them took. Any advice?
@NaturesAlwaysRight
@NaturesAlwaysRight 6 лет назад
I have used that tool before but all the grafting I've done has been with a knife so I don't really know what typically goes wrong with that tool but I've heard that tool isn't as good as they claim success rate wise. Last year our grafts succeeded over 90% with only a knife cut wedge graft. If you take the parafilm off the graft, see if the graft healed or what happened that might help narrow it down. I'd have to look at it to give an educated guess, too many variables. Could have dried out, not been wrapped and completely sealed, didn't water soil enough to keep the roots alive, too much direct sun and high heat on the graft.
@ajones8699
@ajones8699 5 лет назад
Nikki try a few cleft grafts,be sure to get a good fit, and use a grafting rubber. Use good rootstock and scion wood, you will be successful.then watch some whip and tongue,how to videos. And up your game.

I've never grafted an avocado before. But you can graft them with a wedge graft as well. You need an avocado root stock to do it. There are may varieties of rootstocks for the various fruit trees. Different rootstocks are chosen for different reasons.
