I have a question- normally when you graft a big scion on a smaller rootstock they tell you to line up the cambium on one side. It looked like he centered the larger scion on the smaller rootstock and none of the cambium lined up? Did I miss something or do loquats not really matter if the cambium touches? Is the cambium layer extra wide on loquats?
@PeteKanarisGreenDreamsFL
@PeteKanarisGreenDreamsFL 4 года назад
M G you’re correct. He centers it and it works fine. In fact most all of these trees have already budded out and are growing. Typically when they’re close I line up just one side like you mentioned.
@danfarnsworth5368
@danfarnsworth5368 Месяц назад
@@PeteKanarisGreenDreamsFL It looked to me like at the tip of the scionwood there was a narrowing place where there could have been a cambium match. There has to be a crossing point somewhere, I've never heard of cambium in the center of a cut...that's heart wood there.

truly the best ISO is lab grade 99% as you cant have 100% due to just being exposed to moisture in the air ,it does evaporate fast but leaving the least crap behind as its pure also working fast , lesser amount is just water added , for home medical use it burns less , works less but stays on longer so disinfects in more time with lesser the purity , i only keep and use 99% for many things,its the best , if you feel you need less just dilute with some distilled water

....another great vid, Pete! Thanks Adam for your time and awesome “how to’s”! Just an FYI.... The 91% alcohol works better because the evaporation of alcohol is the factor that kills the microbes. It dries them out and The faster the better/more effective... it’s the other types of sanitizers (like Lysol or such) that need more time to be effects because they work more along the lines of absorption/internal saturation

Somewhat crappy regular Loquats that are put out for a lush green landscaping. Usually smaller & sour fruit, that if harvested at the right time & don't rot can make a pretty good White Wine. They are all over in Florida lawns.

Does the cambium layer of the scion have to touch the cambium layer of the plant? In your video, I believe you said the cambium layer of the scion just needed to touch anywhere in the fresh cut under the bark. From there, just make sure it is wrapped snug but not too tight. Am I correct? Does it take about 8 weeks to be healed? I currently have over 100 trees, 1 to 4 years old. All grown from seed. I want to graft them all this year. My first attempt a couple of years ago was a total failure, unfortunately. Thank you

Nice video. I was curious - web search: "Spanish cultivar with very large, smooth fruits of "Japanese loquat". The variety "Peluche" is from SE Spain, where commercial plantations have flourished during recent decades. Peluche originated as a seedling or mutation of cv. Algerie. Peluche is a regular producer of large smooth yellow pale fruits, juicy with sweet, slightly acid flavour. The tree shape is perfect: robust, with a low spreading crown. Sweetness index: 11,63 º Brix Acidity: 6,07 g/l Malic Acid Firmness: 1,02 kg/cm2"

I will try grafting some loquats for my folks in the Panhandle. I've heard that quince works very well for dwarfing them and will try that. (Also good for compatible types of European pears, though relatively few of the good ones are both fireblight resistant & low-chill. Asian pears don't like the prunasin cyanide in quince, so the "Oriental" [hybrids, old Southern canning pears] are unlikely to be compatible.). Because loquat blooms at a different time than other fireblight hosts, it is less likely to get the disease unless from dirty tools [fireblight seems to be a plant STD, transmitted by infected "body fluids" of sap or nectar], but pears and other spring bloomers would be exposed]. My big-city Extension agents are completely worthless, probably patronage hires (I'm not in FL but rather a Midwestern, corrupt area), that post cookie recipes but know nothing about plants or agriculture. So I will ask you: can fireblight (Erwinia amylovora) travel down the sap of a resistant scion (e.g. Warren pear) to infect the rootstock? Quinces are susceptible to fireblight, and if the roots die, so will the plant even if the scion is asymptomatic.

Thanks for this Pete and Adam - it's reassuring to see how forgiving this stuff can be - helps to steady my shaking newbie hands a bit... I know I'm a little late to the party here - but what are the chances of success for a similar side veneer graft on the trunk in a situation where you plan to multigraft the loquat and keep ( ie not cut off) the named, grafted canopy above? In my particular case, I would like to side veneer graft maybe two varieties 1-2 feet up the trunk (and below the lowest existing branches) on my 5' Champagne Loquat tree. I'd like to keep the rest of the canopy growth above as Champagne -for now. Am I wrong to think this would be preferable to continually cleft grafting higher and higher on the few available laterals - which don't even begin until about 3 - 4 feet up the trunk? Also, if what I propose is indeed doable, how low on the trunk should I begin? Thanks for any input you can offer!

You make this look so easy ☺️ Loquats are probably one of my favorite fruits 💓 I have 3 loquat trees grown from seed. I have about 5 Jaboticaba. All less than 3 years old.

Jessica Powell that is how growing a loquat should be done.....from a seed! Not by grafting! So not right!

@@SueCL1480 my friend shared lots of loquats with me and now I have 100s of seedlings 😳 I may have went over board. I have a few hundred seeds away. And a few seedlings away.

Perfect ! I have yet to become a big grafter & I know I need to simply find the time and dive in. But I have a couple loquat scions that if still viable, I want to graft to my Christmas loquat. Loquat, like some citrus, seems a little more difficult to line up, unlike stone fruits and figs, etc. Great, timely video, Pete !! :)

It’s so much fun Jeff! I spent most of yesterday grafting by myself. Not only am I getting better but it was so relaxing.

We must have purchased a loquat tree that is a grafted one. It has an UGLY shape. And, it has been 4 years and still isnt baring any fruit! Wish I had known, wish the nursery would have disclosed that it was a grafted tree from another loquat. Wouldn't have gotten it. So disappointed with a grafted loquat tree! So not right to mess with nature and doing what your doing!

Grafting doesn’t destroy the shape of the tree sir. I have 100’s of beautiful grafted loquats.
