Hi Paul, I think that buddy tape should be stretched a little and wrapped tightly but single wrapping (no overlap) over the buds so they can break out more easily. I would also recommend people use cut proof gloves if possible to make sure they don't cut themselves. Rocking back and forth helps too so no sudden jerky movements that can result in the blade going into your hands/fingers. I use rubber bands to squeeze the graft union together, you just have to be sure to cut the bands once you get good growth or it will cut off circulation and kill your graft. After that I put on sticks to support the graft and tie the stick well so the wind doesn't break the graft.

I'm experiment with strips of plastic bags initially to wrap the graft union & then put 2 or 3 cable ties/ zip ties over that to really sinch that union close. I've even been using normal electrical tape as my binding material for graft unions too.

Oh you use a clothespin to keep the graft pinched together? Such a good idea. I try to wrap it really tight with the plastic tape but the clothespin sounds like good additional pressure.

Think source/sink relationships. A mature leaf is a source, not a sink, they don’t take energy. Good to keep a few so there is some photosynthesis.

parafilm M is what the buddy tape is, I believe. regular grafting tape is a bit stronger, and that's used for keeping the graft joint tightly wrapped. I think the tape is used to keep the moisture in the scion, not necessarily keeping the rain out. these hot days will dry out the scion in no time. then it will dry out and turn black .

I’m growing a few Kensington pride mangoes here in eastern Australia. They’re going well so far. Only 1-2 yo but I’d love to watch what you do for your avocados. I’m yet to graft with them. Mainly knowing what root stock to use.

Just grafted my first mango scion to seedling. The straight cuts are not as easy as they look! We'll see if they make it.

I usually use bread wrapper of plastic grocery sacks cut into strips,it's free. I grafted some pepper plants last year or the year before and those are really slick and they slip and slide all over the place or squeeze out of the split so they are harder than trees to graft but at least part of them did take. I did try grafting some mulberry scions onto a seedling that i thought was mulberry but none of them took, I noticed that the leaves on one I was trying to graft to were not as thick and leathery as the ones on my mulberry tree plus later in the summer it's like they changed their shape into a totally different shape so I don't know what's wrong there, I may be saving worthless seedlings. I guess I will have to practice grafting them back to the tree I cut them off of like you suggested.

I've taken cuttings and "rooted" them using aloe vera...it works real good
@geriannroth449
@geriannroth449 Месяц назад
I prefer Sleepy Lizard's way of using a the wire from a clothes hanger & a large enough plastic bag to "tent" the potted plant grafts as opposed to wrapping the scion.

The leaves create the energy but they use and expel water. I’d think they would be good below the graft because they create energy to fuel the graft. They are fine with water because they are fed directly from the roots. You need to cut the leaves after the graft because it’s hard to get water through the graft joint so all water must be conserved which means the leaves must be removed above the graft. Seems to make sense right?

Can you PLEASE ask Alex from Tropical Acres Farms this question?? Has he tried the Miyazaki mango from Japan? Its a luxurious expensive mango(over $100 to $300) that is a unique ruby red shape that is over 350 grams with 15% or more sugar content. Does the USDA in Cutler Ridge Miami have the Miyazaki mango?? If they do does Alex plan to grow this mango if given the opportunity. P.S. Thank you soo much for the grafting video!!

What is the best time of year to do grafts on a Mango I have since read below about timing the graft. After pulling the last fruit 2 month ago I gave the tree a major haircut. New push is doing fine. Is this the best time to graft , Tampabay Love the vids

Thank you so much Paul! Question: I planted a bunch of mango seeds back in Mid june. They are in 7 gallon containers and growing nicely. I want to wait until after winter to plant them in the ground but the roots seem to already (at 3+ months) be outgrowing the pots. I watched your video with Alex where he says that Mango seedlings that stay in the pots too long and become root bound don’t do well when they are planted. Do I have 5 more months to wait or should I just plant them in the ground? I don’t want them to die off in January. How long is too long in a container? Any advice is appreciated. Thank you 🙏

What about moving them into a bigger pot until next spring?
@THEPEACEFLOWOFJESUS
@THEPEACEFLOWOFJESUS 10 месяцев назад
@@dirtywhiteboy7922 thank you for the reply. I don’t really have enough room to put them in larger pots where they can be protected. They are in a fenced off area which the squirrels can’t get to. If I move them out of that area they will be exposed to those little seed thieves..

I grafted two avocado seedlings that are a year old back in Mid June but they didn’t take. Good thing I only did a branch on each and didn’t cut the whole thing. Someone told me that it’s better to graft after rainy season. Later in the fall or winter. Now I’m getting ready to graft some mango seedlings. What do you think? Is now a good time? Thanks
