Best to place a zip tie on the stem you’re splitting as a stop point. Use Teflon tape at the graft point. Put another zip tie at the node with a toothpick on either side of the split.
Farmer George, Too great a risk of clogging the graft or culturing a contaminant. I normally apply Beeswax Chapstick over the Teflon and Stem to seal the entire graft area. The Ziplock over the Stem is unnecessary with a Wax Seal. The edge of the zip ties make a good reservoir. 😳 Now you got me giving away more of my tricks. 😁
This is the first time I have the opportunity to see how to graft a plant , the easy way. No complication and no fuss with applying wax on the union and wrapping a cloth or tape. Thank you Farmer George. incidently, I've heard you can graft peppers, tomatoe and eggplant all together on one plant. Would be Interesting to see that.
Bhalchandra Desai thank you! The reason people used tape or wrap is so the union doesn’t dry out. So make sure yours don’t dry out or they won’t heal. I’ve also heard about the eggplant and tomatoes on pepper plants (and vice versa), I’m assuming it works because they’re all part of the nightshade family. Good luck and let me know how it goes!
Thought I was the only one that tried doing too much at the same time. I knick myself all the time. Glad you didn't edit. I live where it gets too cold for now but I'll be moving to a warm climate in a few years and I'm gonna like doing this thanks!
Effo Anderson you’re welcome, thank you for the comment and watching. I try to be transparent in my videos. Just a normal dude, trying to share my experiences and hope to learn from others as well.
I had the wrong approach, I grafted then watched the how to videos. My leaves wilted as it was in the heat. Dunked it in the sink and the leaves were rehydrated just 2 hours later. Thats a very lucky graft I think. Then day 2 I learnt to cover with bags... Its how not to graft but still succeed video. Also watch for the sharps!
Cassandra Buchanan yep! Here’s how I overwintered the same plant. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Z0AdcxflaKE.html Unfortunately, fungus gnats got to it in my garage and it is really struggling. It’ll be interesting if it comes back! Thanks for watching! 🔥👨🌾
Well it's not the best way to show a graft but anyway thank you very much for showing us your knowledge.... I'm doing it but I'm using Teflon tape to tight the Union.... And also a small plastic bag to keep it moisture..
Question. Are there benefits of grafting plants that are of the same species? Like if I have 2 chili peppers with seeds that came from the same fruit, are there any benefits of grafting one onto the other? Does there need to be an age difference between the scion and the rootstock? Does the rootstock need to be older than the scion so it can make use of the longer roots, or does the scion have to be older than the rootstock so it can grow fruit easier?
Hey sorry it took so long to respond... to answer your questions: - I haven’t experimented enough to know about the same species. But I don’t think it matters too much. I’ve heard you can graft peppers to tomato plants or vice versa (double check on that). - I don’t know about the age difference, but I think plants in the middle-aged group would work best - to me, a scion that is mature would be fine, but you’re probably growing plants at the same time unless you have some from indoors you want to bring outdoors?
carlos velasquez of course! Make sure and try with a little less mature plants than what I illustrate in the video for better results. The plant will be able to recover easier
Nice video do you have an update of the progress? How old is the plant? How long can a pepper plant survive. I would like to try this but the zone I'm in would require me to weather the plant indoors in the winter.
The plant was in its first year. I think it was probably 9 or 10 months old at the time of grafting. Pepper plants can survive for years if you over winter them properly. Here’s the plant 9-month after this video was made. It over-wintered beautifully (let me know if you want the link to that video on how to over winter), but the grafts ultimately dried out. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3lkvj3mz7pI.html
Can you graft any pepper? I'd like some slender peppers like Thai Dragon and Jalapeno to use daily and some hot ones like Habanero for occasional use on the same plant.
In theory yes, but some pepper species require different environments than others. The peppers you are referring to should work, though! That sounds like a fun plant. Hopefully the grafts take for ya! 🔥👨🌾
Hi, I am Ravi from India.. I like ur methods.. I inspired from ur garden tecnics.. Am interested in planting.. Especially Carolina reaper chilli pepper plant. But I don't have any original pepper seeds. Can you help me. Pls..
Grafting knife works. Clean knife with 70% isopropyl alcohol. Clean tools after cutting one plant before cutting the next with the alcohol. Grafting tape works well also and isn't that expensive. Rooting hormone helps.
I have to say, your peppers looking nice! What is the size of the container you planted them in? How many gallons Oh yea and also, do hot peppers get less hot if you graft them on a less hot pepper? Let’s say you grafted a Carolina reaper on a bell pepper, will it still be hot? And can you graft any plant on any other plant?
Thank you! I believe they were 7 gallon containers. And not they do not change at all when they are grafted. They keep the same genetics as the original plant it came from. Therefore Carolina Reapers will not be less hot if grafted to a Bell. If you are grafting chili peppers to other chili peppers I’m pretty sure you can use any type! Thanks for watching and the comment 🔥👨🌾
BD Beatz thank you! Make sure you use slightly younger/greener branches. My plant is still over wintered and kickin’ in my garage. One graft is strong, I think one more may have took, and I think the third didn’t take. But only time and warmth will tell!
Three fifths of a centimetre, not heard a measurement expressed that way before, how many millimetres please? Interesting way to have a variety on one plant rather than too many of the same. An old fashioned wooden spring clothes peg with its round ‘hole’ would be an option to try to hold the graft in place.
I was curious, would it affect the fruit if you grafted a plant as such? ex. A>B>A>B so rootstock to scion then rootstock variety on to that and again the scion variety on the end?
I’m not sure, but I don’t think so. Think of the branches like pathways for food and water and structure but they’ll still produce the same flowers as the would if on the original plant.
Just curious, what do you do with all those peppers. I yielded about 75 ghost peppers this year after trying them for the first time, and i just dont know what to do with them all. Thanks
When in doubt dry ‘em out! Then grind into powder and flakes. You can also make ghost pepper jelly. Here’s a how to video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-HjvgUdSGc6U.html please let me know if you have any more questions!
Can you graft ghost pepper on cyanne pepper, i got a health 5+ year old cyanne pepper loaded with chilli and 2 month old ghost pepper with 1 to 4 pepper a month
I really can't see a reason to graft pepper plants unless one variety has superior rooting skills and you want to increase the fruiting of another variety by using superior roots. Not saying this is a bad thing to do, it looks fun and educational... experimenting is always fun. But if there is a reason to do this that I missed let me know. I love growing peppers so love the video. I subscribed.
John Liberty thanks! This was just to get more than one variety on the same plant. Helps if you have limited growing space. Thanks for watching and subscribing 🙏
@@FarmerGeorge Have you found a particular variety to have more vigorous roots? I have some varieties that do not perform as well as others and I am wondering if Grafting will change things. I am also finding that my Carolina Reapers will not pollenate on their own, I have to put them under other varieties of peppers to get pollination. Maybe grafting a different variety with them might help with pollination. Your channel has me thinking up uses for grafting.
John Liberty I have not yet found a difference in root vigor because I haven’t thought about it- but that’s a good idea. Sorry about the Reaper. My Reapers don’t do well in very hot temperatures so maybe by putting them under the other plants shades them and that’s why they do better? Grafting a Reaper to a plant that pollinates in the heat would be a cool experiment. Thanks - I am glad my channel has got you thinking. I like to hear from you and to learn about what I need to do as well. Maybe I’ll keep my Reaper in a partially shaded spot this year and see if it does better.
@@FarmerGeorge I am wondering how to test for root vigor, after all I do not have soil penetrating radar eyes lol. Cayenne Peppers produce the fastest out of the peppers I grow, not sure if its because they will flower at a cooler temperature in early spring or if because they establish their roots faster. I guess if I take a few clones/cuttings and see what roots the fastest I will know who has the best root vigor. Maybe using that as rootstock and grafting a favorite pepper that does not produce many fruits on its own will have positive results.
what if you use aloe to join them? i've had a cannabis plant snap a branch and i just smeared aloe all over the damaged area and used electrical tape to support it, healed great with a huge knot LOL
From the aloe plant, I just snapped a small piece off and kinda squeezed it out onto the break. Figured it helps us heal, why not work on another plant
Sir I have a query. I am from India. Can I germinate chilli roots using grafting techniques. If possible pls reply and give some how to produce one new chilli plant by using 2 different species of chilli with the help of grafting techniques.
Love the vids, I come back to this one frequently for advice! Also, even if you don’t reply to this one, I love how involved you are with your fans, and even people that just have questions in the comments! Thanks for working hard to be in touch with us and recording and editing these videos for us!
I just found u re channel..i learn how to planting.and im very curious.my pepper plant already growth but i want learn more.i have much time at home cos corona.
D'nania P I’m assuming they are bringing aphids to your plants. It’s hard to tell without a picture. You can put organic ant traps outside to try and control them. Also, many things cause yellowing of the leaves. Is your soil very wet? If so, let it dry out a little bit. Peppers like to be watered when they need it. I like to let mine wilt and then water them a lot and the perk back up. I let the plants tell me when they want water. Hope this helps!
Susan Mulenga think of grafting as like a way for your plants to get water and nutrients only. You might be onto something though. If you add your bell cuttings to your cayenne plant that has more branches than your bell (this is my assumption), you might increase your yield.
Great question, yes you can! In fact, I haven’t tried this but I read that you can graft peppers to tomato plants. I’m guessing you can graft to eggplants too because they are all part of the nightshade family.
Jay for fun of course! You can have many different peppers from one plant. Also, if your plants suffer damage like from a storm, this is a way you can save plants by grafting the broken branches back on the affected plants or onto other plants.
Grafting is often used to match a disease resistant root-stock with some other top. Many melons and cucumbers are grafted for this reason. Tomatoes are often grafted onto eggplant roots both for disease and tolerance to flooding. Also you may want stronger roots to anchor a plant that is normally easy to tip over. In fruit trees the roots can be adapted to the type of soil and the roots can also be used to cause the top to grow as a dwarf.
Qryptonaut great idea! In the meantime if you go to 7:53 of my most recent video you can get a glimpse of the overwintered ghost from my balcony. I think an update is a great upcoming video. Thank you! Here’s the link: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9m7XDEqzoVI.html
Thanks again for the idea. Here is the link: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3lkvj3mz7pI.html It'll be available to watch today after 6:30PM EST. Hope you enjoy!
Kingslayer 12 the pepper plant I am grafting onto is a Ghost/Trinidad Moruga Scorpion. I grafted Choco Habanero, Orange Habanero and Carolina Reaper onto it.
Farmer George yes I used bailing twin and bees wax when I was 18 I grafted 250 each of peach apple and pear trees. Recently I have researched a methods of using just plastic wrap check it out and I always used tong and grove method over the one u used the tongues lock each other better. I and for my first time grafting I was blest with outrageous results flowers galore keeps me gardening to this day
