Graham Nash performs a cover of Buddy Holly's "Peggy Sue", on Buddy's original guitar. Part of the EMP|SFM Oral History Live! series, Nash was interviewed live in JBL Theater by EMP|SFM Curator Jasen Emmons. www.empsfm.org/oralhistory
In the 1980’s I curated the Hard Rock Cafe collection and we had this guitar. When I played Not Fade Away on it everyone within earshot got goosebumps. I’ve played a lot of famous guitars in my career and this one has more mojo than all the others put together!
I'm from Levelland a small town 15 minutes outside of Lubbock. Buddy Holley inspires alot of the music I create and my girlfriend took me to the museum which I've heard about but never went. The energy of buddy and his belongings were so strong I was sick to my stomach and shaking. I've never felt energy like that in my life and it brought me to tears. It didn't help I took a hit of good LSD the night before. It was the most powerful moments in my life seeing buddy's guitars, bed and other belongings. I will never forget that feeling.
That's awesome! A legend playing on a legendary guitar. I would get excited to just hold a famous guitar but to see Graham Nash get excited over Buddy Holly's guitar is neat. That's respect!
Other than Elvis and the Beatles, could there ever be a peer to Buddy Holly? Had Buddy's plane not crashed that night, I think rock and roll would be different today. Our loss, but Buddy's glory forever.
I just watched this and .....I have nothing to say. I bet after 10 years it's all been said. But that flame story hit me 4 sure. I hope this guitar is stil around telling a story, the story that Buddy never finished..
He didn't diss them he was drawing attention to the fact that ALL of the Hollies had named their group as an acknowledgment of how much they admired his music.
Buddy is the real KING of rock n roll. He wrote his songs while Elvis was an entertainer. I know Elvis fans will disagree. Then of course Chuck Berry is iconic as well. I’m not saying anything that has already been said.
The hollies and the beatles both got their names and their juice to be musicians from Buddy Holly. Many others did too. The Texas et al rockabilly roots came from Elvis coming through and the Brits all got inspired by Holly touring europe (or was it just england).
And Gene Vincent and Carl Perkins and Chuck Berry and The Everley brothers wasn't just Holly and Elvis it was a whole bunch of the American rock n roll artists that inspired the Beatles and the British invasion.
He looks so much like Mark Lawrenceson, That aside,I love this clip.the awe that he genuinellly has and the respect he shows. GN once of "The Hollies" plays Buddy Holly. Great
It’s crazy how Buddy Holly is so revered but only had a few songs. Life was so much smaller back then in the sense that everyone was exposed to the same things.
i only knew about Buddy after watching the biopic the Buddy Holly story, anybody's grandparents see him in concert? maybe in that winter dance tour of 59 with ritchie vallens and the bopper?
Bill Flagg and Rockabillies. He had a hand made guitar cover before Elvis or Buddy.Ihave pictures on stage in mid fifties .I have that D28 and the cover ,but just front cover, the rest was mildew.
"Touching the flame....". Loved this video. Graham seemed to get a bit emotional as did I as he admired the guitar, probably one of the mostic iconic pieces of Rock history. Would like to know how many owners this guitar has had...Anybody know?
Can someone explain how the hell Buddy tooled the leather sleeve on it, I work with leather myself and I want to attempt to make one just like it but my only question is.. once it’s on how do you take it off?? Lol would love some feed back!
there is a video from the early 90's of Gary Busey playing this guitar on the Arsineo Hall show...he mentions he bought it and played it for buddys parents....after playing buddy in the movie....does Gary still own it or is it in the care of a museum?
I thought Gary Busey owned that guitar? No bs, you can watch him all coked out on the Arsenio Hall on RU-vid. He sings and plays on that guitar, and talks about buying it from Buddy Holly’s family.
Buddy's Gibson guitar was made in WW2 it is called a "banner" guitar because the golden banner decal states "Only a Gibson is Good Enough". That was when women replaced many of the men at the Kalamazoo plant. Indeed, the guitars from this era are reckoned to have been very good instruments. Here's a link to show I am not kidding! www.voanews.com/a/gibson-guitar-women-kalamazoo-girls/1622199.html
I think that he is using one of the 18 replica (more on the line of offspring because how it was made) of the buddy holly guitar. I MAY BE WRONG AND PLEASE CALL ME OUT ON IT! But the thing is that there is an organization named the buddy holly guitar foundation. Its perpus is to lend out one of the 18 replica (offspring) guitar that gary beusy own. The story gose that gary took the guitar to get it repaired. And when it was repaired, all 18 ferts where where replaced. So time pass and a someone found out about the original ferts. so they bought them, teamed up with the person who fixed the original guitar and made 18 duplicates of that guitar with each one having one original fert. With the blessing of buddy's wife to use buddy's name that team created an educational organization that lent out those 18 guitars to teach people the story of buddy holly and the importance of music. Graham is one of the charman (i think) to this organization and that is indeed buddys guitar (or the child or duplication NOT recreation)
Ah, Graham, i've said it before, ....who needs politicians ! This world needs people who speak from the heart,..speak from 'Spirit', ..speak from the soul, speak about cosmic truth...shine on dear friend..!!
"The Hollies ?" I feel that is a tad disrespectful for the Band that started him on his stellar career path. The Hollies did their best work.....after he left !
@@jmshaw357 he's referring to buddy covering the guitar in leather not Nash covering the song. You don't have to play guitar very long to know that old gibson would sound 5 times better without the leather muffling the sound.
Yeah..I do get it the nostalgia and history of this guitar...because it was Buddy's. Its like 2 separate issues in my head. AMAZING...just amazing to hold & play that instrument. Yet still the point remains that the tone of the guitar will be badly affected by the leather...will it not? I have played pro with a 6 piece band behind me for 24 years....I think I know exactly how getting "it" feels.
Many thanks for the compliment. I play a Gibson J180 in my "Neil" show...so I do appreciate how wonderful these guitars are. Being a tribute show, it has its limitations...but, hey, it's been better than a "proper" job! lol!
Absolutely, the leather serves as a mute and doesn't allow the spruce top to vibrate. Ole' Waylon did it to his telecaster. To each his own I guess but I would NEVER do it.
I wish Graham would stop putting the Hollies down they were a great little Brit band with some classic tunes, and they put him on the road to his success.
