As a 14 year old (in 1958) my fellow pupils and I had the great good fortune to have a great music teacher who was very open-minded as to the type of music each of us enjoyed. When she asked me who my favourite singer was - I replied Buddy Holly. As I was a parish church chorister this took her by surprise. I was even more surprised when she told me she loved Buddy Holly's music.
This version of Words of Love is just utterly gorgeous. I've always loved this song, particularly The Beatles' cover, but the slower tempo as well as the mournful backing voices at the end actually brought tears to my eyes.
This is a terrific video. Loved it. If the real Buddy Holly had lived he would have rivaled Elvis as the King of Rock and Roll. Look at the amount of great songs he recorded in such a short time. A real rock and roll genius. He created his own sound and so many other groups and musicians have been influenced by him.
buddy holly would have been number 1 over elvis anyday but before elvis was bill haley and comets.Bill haley was better than elvis as the true original number 1
I listened to Buddy Holly with my big brother in the very early sixties. Still love to hear his music, brings back great memories, sadly my big brother is no longer with us.
I don’t think people realize how ahead of his time he was!!! Musical genius. All Elvis did was sing songs that were written by someone else. Buddy wrote and produced his own music
@@jamesm2785 he could’ve been better than Elvis but he was only 22 and Elvis was 44 and basically broke records and dominated that’s why Elvis is the best however buddy could’ve been he’s still awesome though
I love Buddy Holly but better than Elvis? All the early Rock stars were the producers of their music. When Elvis went to RCA he was in charge of the material and sound it was not Steve Sholes. Sholes thought he would be fired after RCA heard Elvis's first session because they were not interested in Rock. Those guys had to record a song live in the studio and could put pieces together. Of course with money that Heartbreak Hotel made for them they built one of the most successful studios ever in Nashville
Elvis and Buddy played at the same club in Lubbock at least one night maybe twice. I read somewhere that Elvis busted the strings on his guitar, which he always did, and Buddy let him use his. I think Buddy didn't have or want a drummer in his band after he saw Elvis the first time in Lubbock but when Elvis was back with DJ as the drummer of their band Buddy went out and got his drummer. I don't know if this is true or not but I do know Elvis liked Buddy and told a girl he was with that Buddy was great after she had said she didn't think he was that good. When Buddy was killed in the plane crash Elvis sent a letter to Buddy's widow saying how sorry he was to hear what happened. Elvis was in the Army in Germany at the time. Elvis covered a lot songs and his people would suggest songs sometimes from certain singers that he admired and there were a few times I know where he would just say I can't a better job on a song he thought was perfect. He never recorded a Roy Orbison song and wouldn't doubt that's why he never did one of Buddy's especially one of his ballads
A musical genius. His music encapsulated the dreams and hopes of young people as we headed towards the 1960s. His songs resonated with those of us who became teenagers in the '60s: love found, love lost and the dream of the perfect love. Some of us found it, others didn't, sometimes we didn't recognise the love till it was too late. For all the amazing music that was the soundtrack to our growing up, thank you Buddy 👩❤️👨
The 50's era of the best music ever. No one will ever touch Buddy Holly & the Crickets. Amazing musicians who really knew music. Great state of Texas can be proud. mosrite60
This is a clip from the best London West End show I have ever seen. 20 plus years later I still remember that night as being the most fantastic night I've ever turned out for. The trombone player made the evening, but the musicians, all playing live made it a memorable event for me and my wife. I hope wherever you all are, life is being kind and thank you for your performance.
I have a complete collection of everything he recorded. Including a tape I picked up for two dollars at a garage sale which has his original version of Maybe Baby - the version that got turned down. Extremely rare. He changed the rhythm on it and re-recorded it as the version that became a hit. I wasn’t a fan until I heard “Rave On” two years after he died. After that I bought every Buddy Holly song I could get my hands on.
my dad put this stuff on I can remember him uploading, it May 22 2020 he died from parkinksons then covid I will never know what bat in chinnese sauce tastese like, so there you go
@@wesleycook7687 I don't have the box set. I bought most of my albums and singles as issued on their original Coral Records label. I don't know of any song he recorded that I don't have. Probably the most significant moment for me as a Buddy Holly fan was when I visited his gravesite in Lubbock in 2014.
@@secondsamadhi I have all his original albums and the ones that were issued after his death but the box set has a booklet that's very helpful plus every record Buddy ever made and tapes that later were made into records. MCA.
This guy would have been bigger than elvis Presley if he would have lived. God bless you Buddy holly Ritchie valens and the Big Bopper keep on rocking with the Angels
You do the right to be done, I'm proud of you, but I keep on missing you, and I would like to see U one time more, just see, but it's all right it's all right ‼I do understand ‼
Dennis Burrier.I was a senior at Solon High in 1959 and Buddy was my favorite.I've been to Clear Lake many times for the Buddy Holly Tribute.Especially by John Mueller✌💕
I’ve been to every major city in Texas. The one place I always wanted to go to was Lubbock. My friends would ask “ what’s wrong with you? Nothing there”. I’d say, “ Buddy Holly and they would say “ got that”.
Lovely that you remembered poor Roger Paterson siobhan, so many forget he was just as important as everyone else killed, may they all rest in peace & ofcourse The King too.
Man, Words of Love almost made me wanna cry. Gus was born for the part. I'm 52 and have loved Buddy since I was 9. My dad raised me right. Such an innevator of many styles. Taken way too soon. Thank you for sharing this!!!
As a young boy, I heard the Beatles do this song and thought, WOW, these guys know how to write slow love songs too. Woa, said one of my bandmates - that song was written by Charles Hardin Holl(e)y. Who? Ok, let me go and check on this guy... Buddy Holly. I have been playing his music ever since. TIMELESS classics that have provided so much influence to those in R&R. I was at a Grateful Dead concert back in the early '70's, and they started to play Not Fade Away. I smiled when someone near me said that Dead songs are the best! I couldn't resist telling him that this was not Jerry or Bob who wrote that song, but a young man named Buddy. Like Michelangelo, he created masterpieces at such a young age, and has made so many happy with his art. God Bless him each and every day!
Ii saw this musical last week at first. I was so impressed of this singer Angus McGregor. He played this role so fantastic. I couldn´t imagin, what a great actor he was. He sang several songs of Buddy much better. But I cannot find an adress of this singer and songwriter. He is not much popular, I think.
This is awesome...I hope this show comes near DC in the future...I'm 38 and always wished I grew up on this musical era...my 9 yr old girl loves Buddy Holly, Glad we came across this video...
Is he Scottish? Angus MacGregor? If he is he completely disappears into this role and sounds like a Texas boy. Wow. It just goes to show what a great and musically talented actor/musician can do.
Gus Macgregor was born in Blackpool, England, he truly was outstanding as Buddy. You can find Gus Macgregor on RU-vid with his own written music very talented singer himself.
Buddy Holly Brings "Words Of Love", In His Songs, My Parents Brought Me Up On Buddy Holly, And My Grandparents Was "Crying, Waiting, Hoping" After The Accident In Clearlake Iowa... Buddy Holly Fan From Scotland!!!
A great movie. It still chokes me up when at the end Buddy says : "See ya next year" and there is just a freeze frame. Good tast willed out and we are not forced to witness a reenactment of the plane crash like they would when doing the Patsy Cline Story (but still a very good movie).
This July 4th weekend was amazing Two things off my bucket list!! My brother and I drove down to the goodguy national car show in Des Moines Iowa and we visited Buddy Holly's crash site and the surf ballroom! So surreal 😪 RIP Buddy holly Richie valans and Jp Richardson (the big bopper)
I want to visit the crash site some day. I live near Lubbock, TX, Buddy's hometown and my parents are buried in the same cemetery as Buddy. I visit his grave often (have to drive by it to get to my parents...not that far apart). Many people visit his grave and leave all kinds of mementos there. He was/is loved to this day. Glad you got to go to the Surf Ballroom too.
The Crickets were actually considering naming the band The Beetles, But they thought the cricket was the least nasty insect of the two. if you think of a beetle getting smashed. Love Buddy Holly, Love The Beatles! Rock on! :)
Carson Runyon if they called themselves the beetles, the beatles we know today would of just named themselves the crickets or another bug because they loved buddy and thats what inspired the name.
@@ueray4 Exactly. I love Buddy's music with all of my heart, his voice takes me back to when I typed this comment and things were so care free and not filled with stress. Best of luck to you and rock on! :)
BUDDY BEING FROM TEXAS AND ALL, THAT LITTLE JUMP AND KICK, SHOWS HE MIGHT OF HAD A LITTLE WILD SIDE TO HIM... .I WAS ONLY 10 YEARS OLD,WHEN BUDDY HIT THE STAGE...LOVE THIS VIDEO THANKS FOR POSTING..
Love it a reenactment from the Movie The Buddy Holy Story ... He like ,, Imitating Gary Busey playing as Buddy Holy from the Movie ... The guy is Very Talented ..
No, it's the actual stage production of The Buddy Holly Story. Far more accurate historically than the movie with Gary Busey. Not to downplay the movie, it's very enjoyable and Gary Busey is great. But it was incredible inaccurate.
The Beatles were inspired by Buddy Holly music and it showed in their pop songs. Rock N Roll music died on that same day in February 1959 with Buddy Holly. Could you imagine if he lived to write more songs that would have changed the music world.
