Regarded as one of the best yellow flowering roses, Graham Thomas is also one of David Austins most popular roses. It is free flowering, has an upright habit and with masses of rich yellow flowers from spring through summer and into early winter in warmer climates this a great rose to use as a shrub, train as a climber or grow it as a pillar rose.
Height and spread will depend on the climate and soil. For us it easily reaches 2 metres (6ft) in height with a similar spread. We prune it very hard each year back to under 1 metre (3ft).
The buds emerge yellow with a flash of pink, open to large cup shaped blooms and then fade to near white as they age. Fragrance is spicy and light.
Deadheading after flowering will promote more flushes of flowers and you can take a bit off the height when deadheading as well.
Prune in winter and don’t be afraid to prune it back hard. This is a hardy and vigorouse rose, and also has good disease resistance.
Fertilise in spring with a specialist rose fertiliser or and organic type fertiliser, we use some aged cow manure and a cow release organic fertiliser water in well and then mulch around the plant.
Once established this is a rose that is very easy care, we rarely water it even in our hot summers and it thrives.
So to sum up
• The Graham Thomas Rose was awarded the RHS Garden of Merit Award in 1993
• It was named after Graham Thomas regarded as one of Britains Greatest
Gardeners
• It was voted as the worlds favourite rose
• It produces masses of flowers, in fact more flowers than most other roses.
• It handle heat well and grows well in full sun.
• You can grow it as a shrub or a climber, but maybe best as a pillar rose.
• It is a tough and hardy rose and will grow in wide range of climate zones
• It has good disease resistance

I think we have several of the same roses as you. This garden was established in the late 70s, we bought the property 7 years ago and I don’t know the name of any of the roses. But we have two that look like these.

Hello Trina, Graham Thomas has been widely used because its so reliable and flowers well. In Australia it grows more vigorously than described in UK catalogues. Try matching the flowers and the growth habit with the video, or google images.

I have thought about planting a Graham Thomas rose. Do bees like it? I have two Rosa Mutabilis plants which bees love and one Gertrude Jekyll rose which does not seem to attract bees. The Gertrude Jekyll rose does not like wind and rain, which really ruin the lovely flowers. Every rose I plant gets black spot really quickly. I used to have a Gold Bunny rose which was hardy however I gave it to one my daughters who, by neglecting it, is having great success with it. How does Graham Thomas react to windy rainy conditions? My garden has to deal with a rough westerly wind at times. You know what Melbourne's westerly winds are like.

Firstly, the bees do like it, however not as much as some other pants. Ours is in the open, exposed to wind and rain and it thrives. We get the northerly winds and its OK with those. The canes are strong and flexible. never had wind damage. It is a a vigorous rose so don't be afraid of using loppers as well as secateurs. As for Gold Bunny, we have that as a climber on an old shed. It thrives on neglect, might do a video on that one Title would be 'Looking For a Tough Rose ? Try Gold Bunny'. I think all roses thrive on a bit of neglect except , for Double Delight, which likes to sulk if you look at it the wrong way.

@@johnnyAGardening I guess that explains all those roses blooming magnificently right now in Melbourne in the front yards of houses that are clearly empty and have been empty for some time. It is amazing how resilient those old roses are. Interesting to hear about your Gold Bunny rose on the shed. I'd be interested in a video on the Gold Bunny rose and include your thoughts on why this rose thrives on neglect.

I just bought two of these, very young and they're beautiful but seem to be struggling for me. How do you recommend to feed it?
@johnnyAGardening
@johnnyAGardening 3 года назад
Hard to tell with knowing location and conditions. SO Good sun, good soil and good drainage. Fertilise with any rose fertiliser, Sudden Impact for Roses is one. Provide some water during dry hot summers. Mulch around the plant to maintain a cool moist root run.

@@johnnyAGardening I'm in zone 9b/10a, in California bay area. Lots of clay about 1-2 feet down. We have good sun and soil, now I just hope for the best!
@johnnyAGardening
@johnnyAGardening 3 года назад
@@idardik In that Zone should be OK. Fertiliser, Water, Mulch. Take into account that they are young plants and will need some love and care through the first few summers, and yes, hope for best.

I’ve got one in a pot and it’s got black spot, do you think it’s stressed?
@johnnyAGardening
@johnnyAGardening 7 месяцев назад
Hello Susie, If you have lots of humidity then that could be the problem. You would to : Increase air flow around the rose. Avoid wet leaves at night. Use a fungicide. Clean up all fallen leaves. And yes stress can weaken the rose and make it more vulnerable SO: Give it a feed of specialist rose fertiliser. Use a wet/dry watering cycle - water well and allow the soil to dry a little before watering again. Make sure the pot is drainibg freely to avoid root problems. If its been in the pot for a long time, the potting mix may be breaking down and it could need repotting (in winter or early spring). Hope one or more of these sounds like a solution.
