Regarded as one of the best yellow flowering roses, Graham Thomas is also one of David Austins most popular roses. It is free flowering, has an upright habit and with masses of rich yellow flowers from spring through summer and into early winter in warmer climates this a great rose to use as a shrub, train as a climber or grow it as a pillar rose.
Height and spread will depend on the climate and soil. For us it easily reaches 2 metres (6ft) in height with a similar spread. We prune it very hard each year back to under 1 metre (3ft).
The buds emerge yellow with a flash of pink, open to large cup shaped blooms and then fade to near white as they age. Fragrance is spicy and light.
Deadheading after flowering will promote more flushes of flowers and you can take a bit off the height when deadheading as well.
Prune in winter and don’t be afraid to prune it back hard. This is a hardy and vigorouse rose, and also has good disease resistance.
Fertilise in spring with a specialist rose fertiliser or and organic type fertiliser, we use some aged cow manure and a cow release organic fertiliser water in well and then mulch around the plant.
Once established this is a rose that is very easy care, we rarely water it even in our hot summers and it thrives.
