Heavy Train With Classic Locomotives Goes Up The Hill, Abandoned Railroad Spurs For Grain Customer & Mixed Freight With 3 Big Locomotives. 2 Short Line Railroads In Same Day! Indiana & Ohio Railway Chase & Cincinnati Eastern Railroad Attacks The Williamsburg Hill. Railroad Crossings And Train Horns On Two Separate Branch Line Railroads In Ohio.
For the first time ever I filmed 2 short line railroads on the same day. The video starts with the Cincinnati Eastern Railroad, CCET, although I filmed the Indiana & Ohio Railway, IORY, first. I wanted to make sure that the best part of the video is first so I show the CCET train going up the steep and curvy hill in Williamsburg. I was on my way home when I was notified of the westbound train with grain, rock, railroad ties and a couple of storage cars. I got this train going through Williamsburg, Ohio on the Norfolk Southern Peavine Line. CCET leases 69 route miles from NS. Listen to the classic EMD locomotives working on the grade. The first locomotive is a GP15-1 and the second locomotive is an MP15DC.
My day actually started in Sabina, Ohio on the ex CSX Midland Sub obtained by Indiana And Ohio Railway in 2004. Unfortunately, the grain spurs in Sabina have been out of service for a long time and a section of track was recently removed at the railroad crossing next to the bike trail. It is sad for the railroad to lose this customer but on average railroads lose 10 percent of their customers a year. We see the grain customer, a couple of nonrailfans who didn't appreciate the train coming and we see the train running south towards Cincinnati. This train has plenty of big power leading the mixed freight.
Next, we go to Cozaddale, Ohio to film the other side of the I&O train at a railroad crossing. The train was booking here! Listen to the wheels clanking over a connection in the rail. This line has continuous welded rail that was installed in 1979. I was here when the sectional rail was replaced and I saw the first train to pass over the welded rail. This is an old Baltimore And Ohio Railroad line that was owned by CSX. When I was in high school at nearby Goshen, Ohio, this line had about 10 to 12 trains every day. I remember the old line side signals that are now long gone. In the mid 80s I lived right next to this line on Obannonville Road in Goshen Township. At that time it still had 6 to 8 trains a day. In 1985 the line was in danger of being abandoned and all the trains were removed from the line except for a train in each direction per day. That is also the same year that CSX stopped using cabooses. Not long after that Indiana & Ohio Railway started leasing the line in 1986. I actually rode Amtrak across this line about 1979 and I rode the Chessie Steam Special to Chillicothe, Ohio about 1978. I am going by my memory and it is possible I could have a year wrong although I doubt it. I could look up my pictures from back then.
Best radio frequencies are 160.860 for CCET and 161.220 for IORY along with 452.9375 for EOT on both lines. EOT frequency is a must for both lines along with 457.9375 for front of train. Both lines are tree tunnels. Lol
The day that I filmed this I caught the I&O at several other locations and I will post a video of that soon. It will include some interesting things along the line. Don't forget to see what the Live Action Pets are up to and the slide show from this video.
Filmed Tuesday, July 30, 2024 in 1080p with 60fps. Thanks for watching!

Sorry to hear about the loss of the customer. Seeing that more and more with the smaller grain facillities switching to trucks. The seasonal grain car shortage doesn't help. 12 years ago I started wearing hats full time after getting several patches of skin cancer and I haven't had any since. Enjoyed the video much, thanks JT!

I agree with you and, I have also read that when a outfit like Genessee & Wyoming take over, they will emeditately raise the rates to where the small custom can not afford the raise in movements of their products. So the competition wins. Just another greedy outfit!!!!!

We lost a great customer on the Peavine Line about 15 years or so ago. Kiblers lumber company used to ship lumber in by flat car and boxcar. The frog on the switch broke and the track needed work but nobody wanted to spend the needed money so they went to trucks. I remember NS setting cars off there and there was almost always at least one boxcar on that siding. They took the switch out though

My Dad worked for C&O, started in Fulton Shops in Richmond, spent the rest of his career in Huntington, retired in 1986. He was one of the organizers of the American Freedom Train, the Reagan Train, the Chessie Steam Special, and the New River Trains. As a child, in the early 60’s, I got to ride C&O train #2 the George Washington, powered by beautiful E8’s from Huntington to Richmond a number of times. Your videos of CSX operations in Thurmond and Prince, WV reminded me of that. So I found all his boxes of papers,etc, and took them to the Chessie Museum in Clifton Forge and donated them last month.

Good to see 2414 having a nice day out! It's been a long time member of CCET loco fleet. Probably the best buy they made in their early days and a very useful little machine! It would look really great if it was painted in the black and red livery they use now. Also good to see I & O using their newly acquired former BNSF locos on a 70 odd car freight haul. I hope that the present desire to combat pollution and climate change will bring about more rail traffic as it is so much more efficient than road haulage over the longer distances and would benefit the country by making better use of the existing rail facilities. Thanks for taking the time to give us a look at the smaller railroads.

The Cincinnati Eastern train was working hard to bring the train of loaded grain hopper cars and rock cars up Williamsburg Hill. I was happy to see that you had a hat with a wide brim on it to protect your head and face from the hot sun. You don't need to get a bad sunburn. The Indiana & Ohio train that you caught in both Sabina and Cozaddale, Ohio was a decent size train. The three engines pulling the train provided enough power to move the train. Thank you for capturing the trains on these two short lines on 30 July 2024.for us to enjoy, Jaw Tooth! (Posted 21 July 2024 at 2245 CDT.)

At least you still have some grain mills left. Here in Oregon most of the flour/ grain mills I used to pickup samples for as a courier are long gone. Almost all the mills that used rail such as Continental, Centennial, United Grain are now no longer operating & demolished / vacant/ abandoned along with many timber mills here in Oregon too. I used to pickup the grain samples in Portland for delivery to the USDA for testing of protein content. Rail is the best most efficient way to haul bulk cargo like grains / flour. The wearing of a hat will also help protect your eyes from bight sunlight too. Especially if it has a brim or visor. We always wear our farms cap when out in bright sunlight now to protect our eyes. Have not yet begun losing hair yet at 68 1/2 years yet! Just a little gray here & there. Hows your horse doing? Ours are doing well. Almost had to use 1 to get parts for our trucks when they all had something wrong with them! Took a chance on 1 with a non-functioning temp. gauge to get a new fuel pump for our hay truck & a new temp gauge for the other 1.

My horse is doing fine but he is very old. He is somewhere around 23 years old. I was looking at pictures of him from ten years ago and he was much heavier. I give him grain and hay everyday along with the pasture that he is in. I hope he will be around for at least a few more years. He is the pet that I have had the longest. Is hay very expensive in Oregon like here ? Ours is up to almost 9 dollars per square bale. I might have to start growing hay instead of corn and soybeans. I also get letters all the time from the solar panel people wanting to lease my land. I can't see ruining my farm though. This area is popular with the solar panel ppl because we don't have zoning. Do you guys have the solar panels in Oregon?
@frederickbooth7970
@frederickbooth7970 Месяц назад
@@JawTooth Yep. Have solar farm right next to ours! The land is tied up for at least 25 years! Agreed don`t ruin your farm. We have an old chestnut gelding who is 19. He thinks he is all there however! He is a good foal sitter for any new colts. He keeps the mares we want not in foal properly ordered.Good alfalfa hay here is $25 / bale for 3-tie bales of about 110# or about $445 / ton. Grass hay that is any good is just as high or even more! Alfalfa has more nutrition & along with good Meadow Fox Tail grass of our pasture keeps all of the horses looking good. We have zoning but sadly does not mean much when big monied interests come & start throwing their weight around. Have had to almost use our Thoroughbreds for transport to get parts for the mechanical ones when all the trucks but 1 had some sort of problem!

Cozad, murderer, gambler, Ohio native, and father of painter Robert Henri. [...] Cozad also founded Cozaddale, Ohio, a small, unincorporated village 25 miles northeast of Cincinnati." How's _that_ for a random fact that three people on the planet will care about?

First, this is definitely one of your better videos. Second, I agree that it's sad to see railroads lose business. Here in New York (city), efforts have been made to bring cargo railroading back, but it still accounts for a tiny percentage of moving freight in and out of the area.

Certainly an interesting locomotive consists and quite the variety of freight cars on CCET. One of those really nice elongated ""S" curves and then the train just goes around the corner and Into the Woods. Too bad about that grain elevator quitting rail service perhaps within a year people will notice the poor condition of the roads being pounded by all the trucks instead. Nice full size Freight on IORY with 3 units no less and you got the usual 40 mis matched gondola hello like you usually do in Cincinnati. Always interesting to see how the Regionals are doing
@beeble2003
@beeble2003 Месяц назад
Those small rural elevators receive grain by truck from the local farms and ship it out by rail. So their truck traffic will basically double. OK, that's a lot of extra trucks, but they had a lot of trucks coming in already.

That grain elevator in Sabina sits along the ex abandoned Pennsylvania Railroad. Notice how the telegraph poles are especially high there. Thats where the PRR crossed the B&O. that bike trail is on the PRR right of way

Was the Cincinnati and eastern running on the same track as the I and O was because Cincinnati and Eastern run real slow but I and O they rolled through there, but anyway, another great video JT, and as always you stay safe out there and watch your back and another thing you reckon why they quit loading grain cars at that silo
@beeble2003
@beeble2003 Месяц назад
No. CCET runs east/southeast from Cincinnati to Peebles, about 60 miles. IORY has about 500 miles of track in several disconnected segments, but their main run is northeast from Cincinnati to Columbus, and a run north just into Michigan. Their name doesn't really make sense -- the great majority of their track is in Ohio, and they have about as much in Michigan as in Indiana.

Great video! That car was definitely not a railfan😮. I used to have a few of those glass insulators when i was a kid. WhenI'm outside in my yard i always have a hat on. I'm mostly bald now so need that hat. Thanks for the video Brian stay well roll on
@JawTooth
@JawTooth Месяц назад
I just mowed the grass and had the hat on. I should have been wearing one for a long time. I know a few areas where there are tons of glass insulators. The Peavine Line has a lot of them and the old B&O line in southern Ohio still has them in areas. I found a real unusual one near Piketon Ohio. I probably should have brought it home. Thanks for the Super Chats again Mark. I appreciate your support! I'm going to do more yard work tomorrow but I think Friday I will be filming again. Thanks again!
