That is a 6v-53. The blower is actually required for it to run and isn’t considered a supercharger. Please don’t destroy it. They are getting harder to find. Put it into a pickup or on a tractor instead. The one in the ford is probably also a GM 8.2 diesel, as they were common in those trucks. I enjoy your videos!

We had a 6v72 in our old '68 Allis Charmers 2 yard endloader. Allis Charmers were easily converted to use Detroiters in a lot of their equiptment.

That’s a rare truck with a 6v-53, very few came equipped that way. The truck itself is trash, but that’s an excellent engine (and fairly rare) to keep. Great find. Your new cameraman did a good job.

Way back when the racers and rat rod guys would clamor over the blower on those engines , even if the rest was junk those blowers were a hot item.

Not necessarily an excellent engine as most 4 stroke diesels of that era were better, but definitely a cool one. Destroying is the wrong move for sure. Gotta keep it.

A bulk feed truck. I never doubt starting a 2 stroke Detroit. They usually start on the first hit of the starter. We used to have an old 6v91 in a 78 gmc general
@brocluno01
@brocluno01 2 года назад
I-H made some really tough gas truck engines. 304 to 549 cu in, and all sizes in between. IIRC, everything from 392 on up had positive valve rotators and other HD parts. Keep them tuned up and they'd run all day on the governor 🙃 That V6 Detroit used to be common as dirt. But nowadays, they are gettin a bit scarce in good running condition. It needs to get turbo'd and stuck in a 1-ton 😁 Cameraman did great. That CAT will take a bit more work, and should be next on the list. Wish you would have grabbed the old Freightliner 3 axle with the 8V92. Tuned up to 500 HP it would have been a fine shop truck.

This truck is so cool. My family had a 1972 International Sileage truck that was similar to this one, only it had an open-air belly-dump. The only achilles heel that truck had was, if you didn't clean it out, thoroughly, it rusted out over time. It sure was cool watching those belts/pulleys/augers/bars working in unison with each other though.

For safeties sake instead of straddling the front tire , and when trying to start any vehicle , and while you're showing off you may want to consider standing to the side of the tire just in case it starts , and accidentally goes into gear !

Probably an international 392 or possibly a 345 in the school bus. They put 392's in a lot of them back in the day. A little underpowered but a great old motor international made! Used in lots of stuff from pickups to busses and farm trucks
@robsshed

G,day Bruce you have made the same assumption as most people that the blower is a supercharger, infact it is not. The purpose of the blower is to "scavenge" the cylinder to remove the burnt gas and replenish it with fresh air for the compression stroke. The silver engine with the turbo is supercharged with the turbo force feeding the blower. Hope this helps. Cheers Rob.
@Patrick-jt4dk
@Patrick-jt4dk Год назад
I work on Detroits daily and have been working on them for over 25yrs now and have my own business for over 15yrs now. The main thing to do with the ones that have been sitting for a long time is to pull one of the valve covers off and put a pair of vise grips on the fuel rack very tight and then you have control of the engine and it can’t run away on you. If you ever had one run away it’s not something you want to experience again. Rule of diesel engines before anything else is to know how to kill it FIRST. SECOND is how to start it. You obey the rules you will be fine.
@myallisg3388
@myallisg3388 2 года назад
I’d say that ole motor would be either a 6V53, 6V71 or 6V92 and Bruce you always wanna check each fuel rack because it might seem good on one side but the other side might have a stuck injector…

@myallisg3388 2 года назад
@@watchjaredwork1487 yes sir you are correct, don’t know how I didn’t notice that before but yeah all 53 series engines have the valve cover bolts on the outside. Yeah also would be a 53 mainly because the valve cover bolts and the governor being at the back of the engine. And the bigger ones etc. 6v71 and the 6v92 have the governor at the front of the engine

If anyone can get those buses running, you will never forget the way those engines purr. I road one of them way back in the first and second grades all the way back in 1985. That bus has an IH 345 (I think) v8. Yes, they built motors. Having a 6-53 in a loadstar was rare especially on later models like the one y’all were starting. The butterfly hood (bus) is earlier and the conventional style hood is later.

Nuh... Old Internationals ARE IN. The music an ol' Detroit makes just sweetens the deal ever more. Get it functional. Lower it in the front, west coast bumper, ditch the apparatus on the ass, topside marine paint, 22.5" Alcoas with lo-pros, dual 6" tall stacks and fab a stepside bed. That truck would sell for very good coin.

It brought back memories. As soon as I heard it, I knew it was a DD 6V53. I drove trucks powered by that engine for 4 years. It was coupled to a 10 speed Fuller Roadranger RT610. We also had Jake brakes on them. 230 WB with 18x19.5 Super Singles on the rear tandems. Most were reframed and stretched Ford C800s. Some FWD 6x6 and Cook Brothers prime movers. The “supercharger” was called a scavenging blower. I dreamed of having that engine in a pickup. It’s really noisy.
