I've loved Grainger's music since playing some pieces (Country Garden, Molly, Morris) as a teenager in my local youth orchestra, in the late 1960's and early 1970's. This is such an enchanting piece, executed perfectly by this enthusiastic young orchestra, it is easy to allow it to get bogged down in some of the slow parts but the conductor kept it flowing freely and joyously. A brilliant heart warming performance.

This was a joy to watch. I played parts I, II & VI at all-region band many years ago and have loved Posy ever since. Seeing my friend Jerry conduct the UT Wind Ensemble in such a virtuoso performance has been the highlight of my day. Thank you, maestro and musicians all, from an LHB alumnus. Hook 'em!

The second piece Horkstow Grange is a north Lincolnshire folk song and it contains the lyric 'Steeleye Span'.

As a saxophone player, really wish for version 3B. Curious to know why Version A was played, knowing Grainger's preference.

Theo Smith just played this in my band, I was the soprano player for 3b and we had to change because one of the instruments in the beginning section couldn’t play. Very sad 😞

It has been speculated that Grainger preferred Version B because of his love for the soprano saxophone and its unique expressive qualities. That being said, a number of respected people in the profession have stated that when Grainger would conduct the work, he would almost always do Version A, which somewhat contradicts this so-called 'preference'. As a result, some conductors, including Professor Junkin, have come up with a Version C, in which Version A is played, but the solo instrument used is the soprano saxophone, rather than the flugelhorn.

It's hard to imagine just how many times Maestro Junkin has conducted this beautiful work. With that said, variety IS the spice of life and it's of great importance to have quality recordings of other versions of the piece.

Bates Recital Hall holds about 700 people and the majority all sit above the first 5 or 6 rows unless it's a packed house. The first row is almost stage level and it just goes upwards at almost a 45 degree angle up to the top. There's probably 400-500 people in attendance; you just can't see them.

Nice transparent sound. Conductor really trying to make music out of this. A lot of the other performances were thick and muddy. Easier to do with small ensemble here, but still....

You may be courageous, but you could use an editor. Spell check cannot help you when you get a wild hair to quote Scripture, in or out, of context.

@@Leisesturm Come on, for Pete's sale! Parishes exist because of churches don't they? The word of God was orally communicated to the illiterate through and in them before it was written, and writing isn't and can't be a perfect record of it. Correct spelling isn't an overriding religious duty but simply (and at least half-secular) community observance, and shouldn't be used as a stick to beat anyone or anything. These days and on this sort of page fingers slip and screens mislead. And Lincolnshire was a county whose culture was agricultural and oral.
