Those of us in Boston didn't know at the time how we were blessed with a radio station that could treat us to live music like this in our daily lives. What an era.....
@donwilcox501...I to was blessed with the music of my generation/era only to realize now in my "golden (ha) years" what gems i had been listening to all along. And now to really understand the songs & stories that were being told in the most outstanding way, in the way of the great singer/songwriters.....so not only did we have the best singers, there were the poets/lyricists that provided the stories to be told.
I read somewhere, that when asked shortly after Gram had passed "What was she going to do now?" Emmylou said something like, "I don't know, I thought I was going to be playing with Gram for the rest of my life."
He was also a fucking idiot. Keith Richards tried to stop him from killing himself with drugs - non-documented pharmaceuticals. Keith , the indestructible Keith, was trying to stop Gram from excessive drug use. Amazing.
Correct you are. Those of us listening in Boston, were blessed with BCN. They had a good run. Radio today is in a sad state and those GOOD OLD.DAYS on the radio are long gone.
God bless this fallen angel, Gram a forgotten artist and a strange cat , however Emma and Gram had a sound that lives on . Thank you for finding this recording and interview.
Just finding my way to Gram. He was sweet and troubled and smart and weak and absorbed a lot of hurt but still showed a lot of love imo. You can still hear the muted pain of it all when Emmylou still talks about it. She was going to be a star anyway but he gave her a path and a platform and shared her growth with the world. RIP Gram hope you found peace.
I have said this on other posts the greatness of Emmylou’S voice is something that gram recognized right away and he knew that to nurture and cultivate Emmylou’S talents was the best thing for both of them. This radio station stop off is probably one of the best or the best Recordings of that. Song period.!!’ Simply based on its organic form “ RIGHT OUT OF THE GATE” You just can’t get better this. Two people who’s hearts were in total love with music they were. Creating, some great history here. Thanks STEPHEN L. GARDnER
Such a beautiful combination, Gram and Emmylou's voices intertwined together! I don't click like on a whole lot videos, but this one gets a huge thumbs up from me. Thanks, David!
Love hurts sure having open heart surgery with a blunt tea spoon...now that hurts but love lasts forever ask Emmylou. ... Finally found my true love her name is Shiri she so fine blows my mind every day...she taught me the meaning of unconditional love... bye the way this is truly superb ....you can hear the love..... Greetings from IRELAND 😉 salamat for this gem Gram and Emmylou always and forever....
THANKS! in 1973 the world was being transformed by a youth music culture and for all the fleshy excess of the the VMA's, today's music scene no longer speaks with the same heartfelt intensity or impact. Listening with a mono FM transistor radio was all it took to be part of what was happening.
No its not, yes Emmy has gone on to have a successful solo career, but like Bobo says she was a great back up singer and imho that was what she did best weave around Gram's incredible emotionally torn voice, on her own she is to be honest a little antiseptic and clinical . She owes him the world as she would never have made it without his patronage.
@@MrPhilfridge - I'm not sure if I can agree, entirely. Emmy Lou has an unusual, magnificent voice - it's her main "instrument." Her voice is her most valuable possession, and she was bound to be "discovered" by someone sooner or later. She mostly sings straight, so that people can hear and understand her sing; it's what they paid for to see. She wisely lets her backup band(The Hot Band) take care of the fireworks. She can growl or "crack the whip" if she wants(I've seen her do it - in RU-vid videos too), but avoids it; it's not the best thing for your voice, just ask a voice coach. It was her great fortune to join forces with a musician like him; Gram's backing band on his "GP" album was Elvis' Las Vegas band(and became the basis of the Hot Band when she started to tour). So she's always associated with top-flight musicians. This is just awesome to hear - in a radio station, and you can hear the quality of their voices in harmony. The Scottish hard-rock band Nazareth heard Gram's posthumous album and had a huge hit worldwide with "Love Hurts" in 1975. They've admitted it, in a Dutch TV video you can see on RU-vid. Thanks for sharing this.
Love hurts. 46 years later it still hurts her. There are still parts of this American Romeo and Juliet story that haven’t been told. This is a great recording. Thank you. Emmy, if you ever need someone to help with those memoirs let me know.
They were a beautiful couple, so in love w/each other, beautiful people. I lost my love the year before but went on. However, Emmy still needs the LORD to make it to heaven. Jesus said 'unless a man is BORN again he cannot see the kingdom of God.' I was age 31 when I "Called upon JESUS" & then was BORN AGAIN by the LORD'S grace alone. CALL UPON HIM now you Must. You do not want to go to the other place (Rev 13)---
Lived in Vegas 28 Yrs 68 thru 96 Gram n Emmy Lou become this song sometimes art lkicks you right in the solar plexiglas glad for it Oh yeah “Sin City” total trip
Great Goodness what a Beautiful Treasure of an American Legend ! Great interview and Song Amazing Thank You ! Somebody stated the Father of Americans Music is so Right ...missin Gram Angels are Singing !
OMG...what beautiful voices welded onto the heart of humanity with the strings of a guitar...the tragedy of youth is not forgotten in old age...for those of us who survive on God's stage..."love hurts" and loss hurts...the Good Lord left us Emmylou though he took you...!!!
'BCN played a lot of in studio stuff back in the day. Somewhere I have a couple cassettes of a live interview with Neil Young & David Crosby recorded just before the world premier of Journey Through the Past at the Orson Welles Cinema.
Never met Emmy lou but when Gram was with Burrito brothers I got totally out of it at the Palomino and they all were just as drunk but we went to a ranch I Topanga canyon and we all fell asleep in our clothes on a mattress on the floor. We all woke up going what happened !!!!
Freak me out hearing lo tech soul music on my high tech gadget . Am grateful . Says more to me than what i hear . Pick up yr guitar brothers and sisters and talk to your neighbour . Chance they be a picker or singer .
back when the radio had something worth listening to.....wbcn before they sold out to corporate money....commercial radio is complete garbage....thank you president clinton for deregulating the airways....
Where did you get the photo? Its a little blurry when I blow it up to see Emmy. Please post more if you have more photos. They look really sweet together.
I think there is more to this. I remember Gram telling Emmy Lou to "Sing in to that black thing over there!" because the mic wasn't picking her up. I don't remember what song that was on but I think it was from this interview.
It's from this tour with the Fallen Angels but from the radio concert recorded on Long Island, later released as Gram Parsons Fallen Angels Live 1973. I have the CD. That exchange is just after We'll Sweep Out the Ashes. Fantastic album. So much energy!
He's gob shit-faced, as usual, but that was what was real about the pain and everything in his (mostly cover) songs. But...why was he so sad and driven to self-destructive behavior? He was from a wealthy family, and was pursuing his (originally) dilettante dream of retro (Nudie suits) country music into a great success..
Carolyn, his mother remarried into a family (Parsons) that at the time owned a huge portion of the orange groves in Florida. Gram was probably set for life financially, whether or not his career in music was successful. And to Nick, above, It's called, MENTAL ILLNESS/Depression, something that can be genetic, i.e. runs in families. Not saying Gram didn't need a good swift kick in the ass from time to time from someone he respected, but being wealthy and charismatic and being swept up in the lifestyle of unlimited pleasures and into the life-sucking vortex that was the Rolling Stones in the late 60s/early 70s wasn't conducive to his leading a healthier lifestyle, physically or mentally. And without adequate support (human, not material), mental illness and/or addiction often lead to untimely death. With Gram we see the results.
