14 years ago, I was lucky enough to take part of a little film called Gran Torino starring Clint Eastwood. During the shoot here in the Metro Detroit, a friend and I decided to capture the Hmong actors’ experience.
For Hmong Americans, Gran Torino would mark a cinematic debut - the first time that they would participate as characters, cast and crew in a major Hollywood motion picture. The short documentary, Gran Torino: Next Door, produced by yours truly would later be featured on the Blue Ray release of the film.

My late father was a huge fan of Clint Eastwood, my family grew up watching almost all of his classic cowboy movies, my fav was The good the bad and the ugly. Watching any of Clint’s movies reminds me of my dad. Miss you dad.😢

Same with my dad. He got to meet Clint and get a photo with on set during the shoot. It’s blown up and hanging in his house like a shrine lol

I've watched the movie multiple times and you can tell that the Hmong actors were... amateurs. But IMO that "amateur feeling" we got from the actors was really really really powerful. It made the movie feel more "real", it made the movie feel less like a big Hollywood production with snooty high-paid actors bitching about the size of their dressing room while getting paid millions of dollars. The Hmong acting was far from bad or unacceptable so don't get me wrong. As an audience member, I enjoy seeing unknown up-and-coming young actors get big roles in movies and tv. The TV show Breaking Bad for example, the only actor I knew before the show was Brian Cranston ... the rest of the cast, while they had acting experience, where relatively unknown at the time they made BB. Its that "new face" feeling that audiences like. I think Eastwood understands this concept of using unknown actors. You still need a bigger movie star to bring people into the theaters and to shore up the important, emotional scenes. But the un-said star of the movie was the amateurish feeling, the "home-made" feeling, the "reality" that was delivered by the Hmong actors. I think more movies should be made this way. Employ up and coming actors more and more and stop feeding us these snooty, over-paid, self-important snobs.

Every single American civilian should be forced marched into [ Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia ] to see the damaged their tax paying dollars did to these innocent people. I'm from Greece. The U.S. dropped bombs on little girls in Greece, before they butchered [ Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia ]. Really not many Americans to admire or respect, so the best part about this movie is about the Hmong. But didn't explain how the French left and in 1963, the Americans arrived and they made the Hmong fight against each other. And not one word about how the USA Bombed Laos. Gosh. Most bombed country in the world is Laos. Sheesh. The United States dropped the equivalent of a planeload of bombs every eight minutes, 24 hours a day, for nine years, U.S. spent over $3billion doing this and Laos wasn't even fighting in the war. And Cluster bombs look like little balls, so to day the children pick them up to play with them and Kaboom, the bomb explodes. Anthony Bourdain Really, Really Hated Henry Kissinger. “Once you’ve been to Cambodia, you’ll never stop wanting to beat Henry Kissinger to death with your bare hands. The Military men are dumb, stupid animals to be used as pawns for foreign policy. - Henry Kissinger, Former National security Advisor.

"they made the Hmong fight against each other" I think people have agency to choose what side they fight for. They're not mindless puppets. You could also say the various communist orgs "made the Hmong fight other Hmong". That's just what happens during civil wars. I knew an old Hmong veteran and he was very vocal about NOT being a fan of communism, so I doubt he was "made" to fight against his will. He lost his parents to the Japanese invasion in Laos, then many years later joined the royal army, was trained by americans and then got permanently injured fighting the Việt Minh and eventualy fled to Thailand and then the west. "U.S. spent over $3billion doing this and Laos wasn't even fighting in the war" The bombing campaign was horrendous but yes they were absolutely fighting in the war. There was the Laotian Civil War and North Vietnam invaded the Kingdom with the help of the laotian communists. The US bombed the supply routes the vietnamese had set up during that time in Laos.
