Gran Turismo 4 is The Holy Grail of Racing Videogames 

In true editor's curse fashion (this is by far the best case of editor's curse I've ever witnessed though), while I was editing and putting together this video, the people over at the PS2 Rewired Discord have actually managed to finally get Gran Turismo 4 Online working once and for all, the servers have been up and running for just 2 weeks and I've already had much better racing there than I've had in 3 years of playing Forza Horizon 4. Incredible.

I ran the Nurburgring for 24 hours. I did two-hour shifts for 12 days, driving an Audi TT DTM race car. And I won.

So I got a PlayStation 2 around 2008/2009 with a copy of Gran Turismo 4. Since then, my parents never bought me another game, and I didn't have the memory card but you can bet I spend days playing that game, I learned the tracks, the cars, everything. This game will forever be my favorite racing game ever.

I was 5 when this game came out. I took ages in the nurburgring trying to complete the A license with the 190e, got to a point I knew the entire track by heart.

Also, this game becomes a cash cow simulator after the A License

Yes... GT4 will always be special to me. I still remember how blown away I was by the graphics of the time when I would watch my uncle play it. So much so that I went to EB Games (before they got bought out by Gamestop) and got it. I spent many an hour after school playing it, and later before I would go to work in the morning. 5, 6, and Sport just don't capture that special feeling that 4 had. I even bought a special adapter for my PS2 so I can play it on modern TVs. The only thing is the blurry picture. Is there a way to play GT4 in HD?

I played this game when it was new, it really set my passion for driving as a whole. I'd definitely argue that it is a fantastic game that has held up to the test of time and was a major influential game for those who played it. I still wish I could play it, I keep my copy of it like it's my most prized possession, unfortunately my PS2 went the way of the dodo so I can't play it anymore and refuse to get an emulator to play it, this game needs to be played in all its glory, not neutered by a emulator that despite being run on a machine that could run a million PS2 games at once, can't seem to run 1 decently.

You are right: SOUL is the key, something that current games lack. On the other hand Enthusia racing game has better physics.

I couldnt agree more mr purple, 👏 from grinding at licenses to make sure you get everything in gold , to unlocking unknown cars , to doing a simple oil change, the soul of Gt4 will always live on, and the fact that they had a r35 GTR and r8 concept is mind blowing , and you could actually feel understeer for a change , i wish the next generation of developers would revisit the basics of what makes a game enjoyable

I was in the 10th grade when this game came out. This was one of the first things, if not the first, that I bought from Amazon at a time when most people did not buy things online at all. I remember it feeling like the future had arrived. I'm not sure I can explain how crazy all this was to someone who wasn't alive back then.

I don't remember how many hours, days or weeks I've played this game. It's still my favorite racing game today. I hope GT7 will bring back this kind of content and pleasure.

I loved that game to the bottom... The 48h Races that me and my father keep switching on turns to complete (we didnt know about the B-Spec), the damn near-impossible missions... Everything was good and gold

I passed this entire game twice in my teens. Bought a ps2 a few months ago with all first 4 GT games and im in the process of passing both gt3 and gt4. Im about 65% on both but I do have to agree that gt4 is the shitnizz.

My aunt got me a copy back on my 4th birthday in 2005, the game is still going great without the fatal red clock. (Edit: As an onwer of a Driving Force Pro was indeed one of the first 900 degree wheels with a close release to the G25, its a VERY solid wheel)

Yep, I was privileged enough to have it as one of the first ever ps2 games I bought, it blew me away, because the previous car game I played was Need for speed high stakes of ps1, just the intro blew my mind.

I went on holiday on an island I go to every summer. I have a PS2 there, where I spent most of my time when I was little. Among the games I played was GT4, so naturally I wanted to check my 10 year old save file again Imagine my shock and disappointment when I realise that the disc was not working.

Man I loved this game , we used to play with my dad and brother. Each of us had his own car . My brother had the White Astra Touring Car , I had the Motul one and my dad I think had a Subaru ? I don't remember since we never saw the back of it , he always struggled with controllers lol . But we also used to choose other cars with my brother and race twice in Trial Mountain , this way each used both cars and we calculated the differences to determine the winner of each round . And the races were brutal , because we raced that track so often , we had our lines on point, and we both knew how to cheat against each other too.

I have been emulating Gran Turismo (PSP) on my phone for quite a while now and I will say that it is the best racing game for mobile. It is literally GT4 but in your pocket.

Gran Turismo is more than just a game franchise. It's a teacher. I don't remember if GT4 did, but GT2 came with a manual explaining oversteer, understeer, pitch, yaw, roll etc to help you become a better driver. Then after that, it explains racing lines, apexes, s-curves, etc...to help you become a better racer. So much time and effort to make the player better, not only at driving within the game, but driving in the real world.

When they finally included the Circuit de la Sarthe (or what we all know as: Le Mans) that was it for me: best racing/driving simulator game ever.

The car selection, the tracks, the soundtrack, the progression, the fun driving. These are the aspects that made it the best racing game of all time

Bro, there was just something magical happening in games around this time, you just had to be alive then to experience them (Sigh) Gt4, San Andreas, nascar 2004, NFS most wanted, Simpsons hit n run, vice city, the list goes on....... We hit a blessed pinnacle in playability, and memorability. There's a reason these old game will never be forgotten🥺🥺

This video took me back to a time when life was truly beautiful and carefree. I'm 25 now and haven't played a Gran Turismo game in at least 4 years but I can still remember that soundtrack to this day and all the nights spent on endurance races man great memories

At the time, this game's graphics was incredible. Even stacked against PC games released that year, like Half Life 2, Far Cry and Doom 3. It was one of very few titles that could be displayed natively in 1080i on the PS2. The gameplay was phenomenal, and the content was top notch. Even to this day, there are few racing games that offers the same amount of cars and tracks ON DAY ONE! (looking at you Forza). It still holds its own quite well, even to this day.

Finally someone said it. That big gaping hole in my heart for racing games... it's this game and the inconvenient fact that nothing since has even come close to it.

The PS2 was such a great console for racing games, it was amazing to be able to play both GT4 and Burnout 3, which in my opinion are still the peak of more realistic/simcade and arcade racers.

I had the game and the official wheel. (Still do.) I played it everyday it seemed like. I showed it off to many people. All of them were impressed by their experiences back then. I also believe the game still holds up today with the proper setup.

I never noticed that the Italian brnads of Lambo and Ferrari wasnt in it, the game blew my mind. 24hrs races..with friends...were the most intense hard and demanding gaming sessions ever, this game is amazing

Totally agree, GT4 is so much better than the games that followed it. The main thing missing in modern games is the FUN factor. You could crash with no consequences, upgrade your car and make it more powerful than the ones you're racing against, or if you want more of a challenge then use something less powerful. I miss games like this and Burnout.

I remember when I first got my PS3 the fat boy that was backwards compatible and playing Gran Turismo 4 on a PS3 it was outputting in 1080i that is the best way to play this game

While talking about the AI you forgot to mention that it seems like the slower AI cars will hold up the human player so that the fast AI can get away clean then as the human you have to catch them from way behind.

This game holds a special place in my heart as it was the first sim racing game that I’d ever played. As a kid/teenager, I learnt and honed driving techniques which I still use today as an adult by playing it for years. Watching this video brought back so many memories. GT4 + Driving Force combo was my first experience using a wheel with force feedback. I was 12 years old. Since then, one of my dreams was to built a sim rig.

Facts. I played this game as a child/teenager and even tho i wasnt able to see the goods of this game back then I can do now. Hell man did this game strengthens my interest in cars and racing and all the racing games after it and always thinking back to the GT4 days makes me happy. When you got home from school hoping that your parents didn’t turned down the ps2 because you paused your 24hours race just to continue for the whole day.. wonderful times

I used to be a massive Forza fanboy. I was like "bro Turn 10 can pump out like 5 Forza games in the time it takes Polyphony to make ONE Gran Turismo game!" and yet looking back with more objectivity... Gran Turismo has always had a level of polish that Forza could just never match. Yes, the car catalogue has hundreds of Skylines and Kei cars many people will never drive, and sure the "Premium" vs "Standard" car interiors was jarring, but overall the Gran Turismo series is just further ahead than Forza still. I'm 100% looking forward to Forza Motorsport 8 vs. Gran Turismo 7, and I sincerely hope I can find a PS5 so I can play both.

You can mod the PCSX2 emulated version with HD textures and HD hud, and UI as well. It makes it a lot better.

Yup, by far my favorite racing game. GT5/6 really were lacking, hopefully GT7 is a return to form. I need a more compelling campaign, or even multiple compelling campaigns across various race classes. I need a quality online mode as well, because let's face it. Couch co-op is dead.

The main issue I have is that as soon as I grow an attachment to a certain car, I don't need it anymore as it doesn't meet the requirements for any other race category. I just end up with a bunch of cars that I love that I can't use in any races.

Controversial opinion, but even as a GT player since GT3, when I was 3 years old, GT4 is massively overrated these days. At the time it would be worthy of the pedestal it's on, but since then the GT franchise has improved on it with newer titles. By saying you can't make a comparison because of older hardware, that's why I say for its time it's worthy, but not today. Generally people look back on GT4 because of a combination of nostalgia & how advanced it was at the time, but since then it's been outdone. Times change, and technology advances for a reason. Now there are aspects from GT4 that it still does better than most (career mode especially comes to mind), but to say it as a whole is STILL the greatest of all time is a bit much. Just my thoughts and opinions. I still love GT4, but just think it's overrated for the times we live in (not at the time of release) to still call it better overall than more modern titles, inside & outside of GT

Nice to see that this game is deeply appreciated by some, so many years later. Everything he said in this vid is true. I got this game shortly after it's release. I remember how this game sat in the shadow in the OG xbox racing "sims", and how many played to death GT3, and wanted something new. However they missed out. When I discovered that it can run on HD 1080i with a component cable, I lost my mind. It was ahead of it's time in this regard. Few had a pricey HD TV, and HD game systems came out a year later. I got the newer/ prettier racing sims, but I still play GT4 occasionally. Great video, thanks!

Indeed! I spent more time on GT4 than any other endeavour possible- including sleeping. My garage (s) were massive and so highly customised, just to my high levels of OCD. My group of rev - head mates sunk countless hours trading ideas for tuning and racing challenges. Plus the LAN option provided some awesome all nighter fun. Great memories. 👌🏻

This game definitely has passion! And you have passion for it! Love the passion, man! It's definitely what's missing in this modern, corporate greed-driven, soul-less/broken, gaming industry. I love GT4 too. Unbelievable game. However, my GT heart will always live inside Gran Turismo 2. The roar of those GT2 engines is second to none. Great video.

Photo mode, I spent hours on that before I had the steering wheel and when I had the steering wheel; the switch from when I got bored from one another is just many hours of just fun x)

LAN mode on this game is an absolute blast!!! Up to 6 players and compatible with the G27. So much fun when racing with your friends.

I still have my GT4 Online Beta disc, and I'll never give it up! It also unlocks every car and gives you 99 million dollars to spend.
