In 1986, for it's 30th Anniversary Granada Television produced a series of new idents to use in their continuity / presentation output. These four were recorded in May 1986 on Betamax tape. These idents were used for much of the summer of 1986, although at closedown the standard electronically generated ident would still be seen. © Granada Television / ITV Studios

Hey, great to see these again! And to remember the challenge of passing a camera over and around all those hot candles! I produced these Idents at Granada back in the day, but don't think the animated Ident with music went down well with the bosses up on the Fifth Floor! I think they decided to keep them for the Anniversary only. My vision was to emulate Channel Four's wonderful Ident. The music sting was a re-arrangement by the lovely Tony Waddington, of his original Promo music for "Christmas on ITV" in 1984. Can't believe it was 35-odd years ago!

Hey Paul, great to hear the story of these special idents from the producer himself! I remember being surprised by them at the time, such a departure in style for Granada, who seemed to prefer the generated static logo. It would be nearly four more years before they embraced motion graphics and stings for presentation idents. Were you behind the classy 1990-95 set of blue on white idents too?

@@avp1969 No, I was Promo Manager from '84 to '87. I can't believe it wasn't longer in retrospect, but we made some great campaigns for the ITV network back then. Great company, and great people!

That last version with the recreation of the vintage ident was just inspired. And even apart from an anniversary, the golden Ĝ logo was just crying out to be animated, just like this! But you're right: management most definitely didn't want That Kind of Thing. I know, because 10-year-old me wrote from London to ask why there wasn't an animated frontcap ident on Granada's programmes, and even to suggest some designs of my own. It might even have been you that wrote back to decline my suggestions so gently and to provide a full explanation of management's thinking*! If it was, thank you very much indeed, it was really appreciated! *something along the lines of letting Granada's programmes and reputation speak for themselves and not needing any kind of fancy promotional material or packaging

Did you eat the cake before the wax fell all over it? (Looks like a lovely chocolate.) Also, why didn't Granada use the animated idents from this season for the front-cap idents? The static logo is boring.

This is Granada Television's 1st time having moving idents. And it is from 1986, a year to celebrate its 30th year of broadcasting on the ITV network which is from the North. Also, from 0:40 to 0:43, there is Granada's 1st logo which is used from May 3rd, 1956 to 1968. And now you all know that Granada Television has movement ident and its previous logo. I get it and you will get it from this video. Also, it has 3D imagery from the computer as well.
