Hey Hey It's Saturday and Ghost Train clips (25/5/91?)

Recorded one Saturday morning in 1991, possibly 25th May: first we have Michaela Strachan presenting the end of Hey Hey It's Saturday, and then we go into a bit of Ghost Train where the nasty Barry Mafia has cooked up an evil plan which I'm sure Nobby the Sheep and his pals were able to thwart, but we may never know because there's only a bit of it here. Mark Stevens of Neighbours is guest of honour, and Oscar-winner Andrea Arnold also drops into prehistoric times to meet the gang (that will just about make sense when you watch it).
As usual, I've had to snip out a cartoon and a Dannii Minogue video - sorry about that - but I've left in all the ads and promos. This wasn't quite an unbroken recording on the tape, though, as it was apparently stopped for a while after Bugs Bunny. Meanwhile, Hey Hey It's Saturday is missing its episode of The Charmings (S2E4, going by Wikipedia).

Wow Ghost Train used to watch this back in the day. I had a few of the 1991 episodes on tape but I threw them away in the mid 90s unfortunately. Thanks for the upload though.

Its not just the show, its the adverts as well. So much nostalgia. Ghost Train was a regular watch for me. So many memories that feel so close but so far if you know what i mean. Good simple times.

It looked like that bit was superimposed wasn't it? I'm sorry for probably six year old me shutting off the tape if it was, but it may have been someone else? Ah well at least it was something to show that the show was on TV at the time. :)

I have a few Ghost Train clips on my channel which is from a June 1991 episode at Centre Parcs and the gang threw a birthday surprise for Nobby! Best memories of my childhood! Sadly I lost last year as it got chewed up by my video recorder!

Just want to add another comment… How come the quality of this video is SO good?! Was it recorded on a 6 head VCR or on Betamax?? It’s brilliant!! Who agrees with me that Ghost Train had the best intro for a Saturday morning ITV 9:25 program in its long history?? :)

Glad you like it! I'm not sure what it was recorded on, but it was a good VHS recording, and the tape was evidently stored well. That's a decent start. Then it's all about getting a good capture and, finally, doing some post-processing. My secrets: (1) careful noise reduction, and (2) keeping both fields of every frame.

@@Giovanni_Team_Rocket_UK That is really surprisingly impressive - what did you use? My honest observations: 1) You've managed to bring out a lot of detail and make most static edges wonderfully sharp. 2) You didn't mess up the colours, which is the first mistake most people make. 3) The AI sometimes struggles with movement or very complicated shots. The graphics at 3:26 tripped it up a bit, for instance. 4) Some shots are over-smooth, making the people look a little like oil paintings. 5) Did it halve the frame rate? 6) It's eradicated some VHS picture ghosting, which I didn't even think was possible. All in all, you've done a great job, and the technology is improving quicker than I realised!

Same here, I also have a episode which I have had for 30 years this week, it was Nobby the sheep's birthday at Centre Parcs, Sonia, Rusty Lee and Mark Stevens were the guests and Barry Mathia's mace broke in Skull!

Once again thank you ever so much for uploading this. I again apologize if there was a bit of Ghost Train missing after the cartoon and that is so abruptly ends with Barry cornering the Ghost Train crew, except Nobby. But hey it's something. Once again, you reminded me of a few ads I had forgotten like that early Max the Lion ad and the Robinson's Mega Treasure ad (which I recall was on a LOT during this time). Thanks ever so much again. :) (Yeah I'll be thanking you a LOT). :) Also I swear that I'm NOT a creepy Danni Minogue stalker, it's just a coincidence. LOL! Seeing that WCW ad reminded me that there was a segment on LWT (probably other regions as well) that aired around I guess late 1991 or 1992 called 'Sunday Funday' (or something like that) and it had Pat Sharpe as a host and it featured WCW wrestling (I don't think it was WWE (then WWF) that they aired) then followed by Disney/Jim Henson's Dinosaurs.

I still can't thank _you_ enough for all these treasures! Looking back now, it's amazing how much our popular culture revolved around Australia at the time. Whether it was one of the Minogues or Jason Donovan or someone else from the soaps, they were *big* news at the time.

@@VideotapeFTW That is actually something that I do remember a lot when the 90's began, whenever the teens talked about stuff it would usually be about one of the major Australian soap operas for heir target audience; Neighbours or Home and Away or the stars who used to be in those to have gone on to have singing careers. The early-mid 90's it seemed was the time of the 'Australian Invasion'. :D Oh you're very welcome as always. I'm glad these tapes have been providing lots of people with nostalgia and it's great seeing this stuff again online of all places. :)

I was on Ghost Train as an 8 year old around about this time, it may possibly have been this episode, when The Two Marks burst into my house and shouted Boo! in response to a letter my sister wrote about how annoying my recorder-playing was. I've never been able to find the footage though.

@@johnpoole8332 Due to the time travel aspect of this epsiode, I somehow doubt you appeared on this one. It sounded like that may have been another episode, probably from an earlier series, as this was series 3, or it could have been of been a different epsiode. Here's hoping that you might stumble upon the footage some day though.

This date this was broadcasted was Saturday 25th May 1991, as Michaela mentioned the Whitsun/Spring Bank Holiday and the Summer Half Term holidays with her presenting a show similar to Hey Hey It's Saturday on that Monday and Wackaday being on during the week. :) (The Whitsun Bank Holiday always falls on the last Monday of May and that week is for the most part also the Summer Half Term Holiday). :)

@@VideotapeFTW I think it's safe to assume this time around that it's accurate. Another fact that helps is that my Birthday always falls on the Spring Half Term holiday and the date is pretty close to when my Birthday is. :)

Something I've much discussed elsewhere is, for want of a better phrase, a Mandela Effect regarding Ghost Train. I swear that Jenny Powell was one of the main hosts, but it kinda seems that she wasn't. I've had several people strongly agree with me that they also believed this to be the case, and even one seemingly sincere lady discuss with me at length that she was actually involved in one episode as a child and Jenny Powell was the host. But when you look into it, the evidence is confusing. Francis Dodge and Sabra Williams were the two female hosts through its entire three year run. But I don't remember Sabra Williams at all, I remember Jenny Powell. No footage has ever turned up on here of Jenny Powell, but if you fish around Google you'll see numerous credits of her as one of the hosts. Most poignantly, even her management company features her profile with Ghost Train as a credit. So, is anyone able to settle this once and for all? Can anyone shed any light into this mystery, or better still actually prove one way or another Jenny Powell's involvement or not?

She isn't listed as a host on Ghost Trains' Wikipedia page, but that's not to say that she didn't? This was from an episode from the third and final series in 1991, but she could have been hosting during the first series in 1989 or the second one in 1990. This is the only episode/footage of the show that I had though, so I can't properly confirm or deny that.

Series 1 can be entirely ruled out, because it directly clashed with the live broadcast of UP2U on the BBC, which she hosted. Series 3, she doesn't look to have been a part of the presenting team because she's absent during the last ever edition and none of the many clips played feature her. Nor any other videos on RU-vid. Series 2 is a slightly more grey area, but from what I can find she doesn't seem to have hosted that series as part of the regular line-up, either. All evidence seems to very clearly indicate that she was never a part of the proper permanent presenter line-up and the only reasonable suggestion of the possibility of her involvement is as a guest host for maybe a few editions. In trying to prove that she did host it, I only ever find more and more proof that she didn't. Which is a very odd thing, considering that her own profile claims that she did. It's a curious mystery, I might just solve it one of these days.

Hey Jenny Powell may have been in one episode, but I think you are thinking of Gimmie 5. Gimmie 5 had nobby the sheep and was presented by Jenny. So you'll likely remember those 2 together. There are gimmie 5 clips on RU-vid.

It's great to see more Ghost Train clips. Have you got the clip of The Trapdoor competition? The prize was the set as used by the animators - what a prize. Sadly, I wasn't able to enter because I wasn't quick enough to write down the address. What a missed opportunity!!!

It's ridiculous that they had an ad break just to go into the end of the segment and sign-off. It's the sort of thing that American TV excels at. I mean I know toys don't sell themselves but it just looks bad.

This particular one, I think I deinterlaced it, added a little noise reduction, and then resized it to a RU-vid-friendly size, if I remember correctly. All in StaxRip.
