When trails are icy and we want to do small sections of Rim trail, South Kaibob, or Bright Angel, are cleats sufficient, or spikes? Bright Angel is closed currently 1/2 mile down I believe, but we can do the top I think. Headed there on 2/13/2024, a couple days after significant snowfall. Thanks - your videos are awesome!
@Hikingguy
@Hikingguy 7 месяцев назад
I've been there when the trails are covered with ice and spikes were needed and were sufficient. I would only do Kaibab though, trails like Grandview are crazy steep in good conditions, pretty scary even with spikes in the ice and snow.

Very informative video. My wife and I are heading to the US from Australia in December 2023 and we’ll be staying at Maswik Lodge in the village, south rim for a couple of nights. Hoping the weather is kind and we can do Bright Angel trail 🤞🏻

Hi Cris. Since the Ribbon Falls bridge is out, is there any access to the falls from North Kaibab trail?
@Hikingguy
@Hikingguy 4 месяца назад
I don't believe so and I have seen the park service showing the falls as closed. Guessing they don't want people getting into trouble in the crossing when it's swollen in spring.
@steveragan3945
@steveragan3945 4 месяца назад
Thanks for quick reply....you confirmed what I suspected. I think they've only recently let the contract for the new bridge which I believe will be unpainted steel.....no wood. My guess is new bridge won't be completed until 2025 or 26.

April was when we did it long ago. A lot cooler below. Snow on the top. Stayed in a 1964 Chevy truck with a 1972 overhead camper. Took back packs with lots of extra water, food and room for extra clothing. Had lunch with some nice ravens on the river overlook. My sister and her best friend went down to the river. Bright Angel trail❤️. Loved the mules and donkeys

My husband and I completed a Rim-River-Rim (South Kaibab down, Bright Angel up) hike in a day on 9/22/2023. We had watched your videos many times and your tips were invaluable. We did okay, it wasn’t pretty, but we made it and we’re still alive, we’re in our 60’s. I didn’t expect the hike down to be so difficult. I used trekking poles and purchased the shoes you recommended, Hoka. I’ve never had knee issues and had trained a lot. My right knee was swollen and in pain halfway down the trail which made for a very slow climb up. My backpack may have been too heavy, in retrospect. It was windy and cold starting out and I didn’t drink, eat, or use electrolytes effectively. We had a long rest at Phantom Ranch. Do you have any advice or tips for hiking downhill more efficiently? Thanks again for all you do! We love your channel.

Glad to hear that at least you got to experience it and made it out safely. I've found that if I do weight training with my legs, the muscles seem to work better to absorb shock and there is less dependence on my joints and tendons. Worth mentioning in my next video here I think, thanks for sharing that.

@@Hikingguy sorry, it’s an old rule of thumb about hiking in the Grand Canyon- I went with a geology class in 76, down the hermit trail to the river one day and back up to the parking lot at the s rim the next day…

The idea being that you could consider a hike in the Grand Canyon to be twice the miles of anywhere else ;)
@Hikingguy

@@jac8436 ahh got it - yea many people underestimate hikes because it's downhill first and then a climb back out - as they say "hiking down is optional, hiking back up is mandatory"

Question (not really a dayhike question lol) - overnight, on average, what is the temp difference between Bright Angel campground and say, the south rim? For example, if it's 20 degrees at the south rim, would it be just as cold, colder, or warmer overnight at the campground?
@Hikingguy
@Hikingguy 2 года назад
As you descend into the canyon, the temperature rises about 5.5F (about 3C) for every 1,000 feet (305m) that you go down. But nights it gets cold since it's the desert. And the weather at the bottom can be different than the South Rim. Your best bet is to take a look at the lows for Phantom Ranch to get an idea of how cold it will be > forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?site=fgz&smap=1&textField1=36.1050&textField2=-112.0940#.YZUh1S-B2gQ

Hi! I’m planning my trip for next year, however, I am HIGHLY allergic to mules 🥲. How often do you come across them on the hike? Once or twice? Thanks great video
@Hikingguy
@Hikingguy 2 года назад
What a bummer - well, it's totally random unless you go at night unfortunately. You might want to call the rangers office and see if there are any periods when they can guarantee that no mules will be out there.
@sisterluke
@sisterluke 2 года назад
Each trail should have a schedule for when the mules are riding down. Check the website or app for those times.
