Grand Canyon Rim to Rim is on many hiker's bucket lists. We were fortunate to go to the Grand Canyon recently to do just that. Things didn't go exactly the way we planned. What happens in this video is not uncommon.

Many Grand Canyon veterans say "respect the canyon". It has taken me a while to fully understand what that means. I am still learning it. For the longest time I thought they were referring to keeping it clean, leaving it better than you found it and "leave no trace" like many learn in the boy scouts. I have learned it's so much more than that.
The Grand Canyon is a beautiful amazing place but it's also dangerous. Much more dangerous than people imagine. Yes, "respect the canyon" means everything listed above but it also means be prepared because it can be very dangerous.
The more you "respect" that fact and the better prepared you are, the more you will be able to enjoy it. Things can still happen but you will be better able to handle it. And better able to get yourself to safety if you need to.
We helped a few others on this trip who were having trouble. They were not prepared and they suffered. It was easy to see that their experience was not what they imagined when they planned to go. Their excitement and expectation turned into a real struggle. I hope they go back again. And, I hope they are better prepared the next time.
I also hope you enjoy this video! And, if you decide to go, I hope you have an amazing time in the Grand Canyon! We sure did!

Hey JT, my wife and I are just back from the Grand Canyon (we are from Germany). We spend 2 weeks of vacation at the west coast incl. Grand Canyon. In fact, Grand Canyon was THE reason for this whole trip as we wanted to hike down to the river and Phantom Ranch for our first time. We planned this trip initially for 2020 but then with COVID we had to postpone for 2 consecutive years. A part of planning and preparing for this hike consisted of watching you epic series of films here on RU-vid about your training and hikes into the Grand Canyon. I cannot thank you enough for these as they helped a lot to prepare correctly for our adventure! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! We first visited the North Rim where we did a "dressed rehearsal" for our main hike. We hiked down to Cottonwood and back up that day. This was our very first real hike into the Canyon. I was very nervous the night before and couldn't sleep a lot. Althoug we had been to the Canyon before it was different this time, standing at the rim and looking into the Canyon with the idea in mind to hike down the next day makes you feel very humble. However, it went quite well and afterwards, we felt comfortable to tackle our main mission, which was Rim2River2Rim from the South Rim the week afterwards. So we headed for Phantom Ranch on May 30th, going down South Kaibab and up Bright Angel. Started at 4:20am and arrived at Bright Angel trailhead at 5:10pm. It was an awesome experience and it is impossilbe to describe the emotions along the hike... We hope to be back one day to maybe do a Rim2Rim, that would be the natural next step. Again, many thanks for your videos and keep them coming. I will watch all of them. Also, best of luck for you goal to do R3 in less than 16 hours. That would be such a great accomplishment and I hope you will make it not too far in the future! All the best and take care!!

Hey Dodge Viper! Hearing your story is awesome! Thank you so much for sharing. I'm spoiled that I get to live just a 5 hour drive away from the Grand Canyon. Spoiled and lucky. I can't imagine all the effort and planning that would go into traveling all the way from Germany! That's amazing! Hiking down to cottonwood from the north rim and back up in a day as your first hike in the GC is incredible! You both must be in very good shape! I always tell people (when asked about the Grand Canyon) the pictures don't do it justice. I thought about that when you mentioned looking out over the canyon and thinking about hiking down. It's amazing isn't it? Seeing it in person. Actually being there is an entirely different feeling than seeing it in a picture or in a video. Sounds like you've been there before so you already knew what I'm talking about before you got there this time. But thinking about hiking down takes it to a whole other level right? I now exactly what you mean about being nervous the night before and not sleeping much. I've experienced that a few times too. I'm so glad you and your wife had such an amazing trip! I'm so glad you found my videos helpful. Thank you for mentioning that. It makes my day for sure. Good luck in your next adventure! Thanks again!

I have arthritis in both knees, and it had become incredibly painful to hike. Nothing has worked except for Biofreeze patches. I get size large and cut them in half, put one half on each knee. They last all day long and do not cause skin irritation (I have sensitive skin.) I can now enjoy hiking without pain. We just got back from hiking Zion, Arches, Sedona, around the Grand Canyon, etc and were there the same time you were. Have your friend try the patches. Always take them with you for an emergency like this as well.
@jessespad

Even wearing knee braces doesn't work? Did you ever use trekking poles? I've had some bad knee pain, but the tight wrap/knee brace has been working pretty good for now. I probably have Arthritis too. Those patches look great! I need to put some in my little first aid pack.

I did the S. Kaibab to Bright Angel in June 2007 - 120º midday. I met a group near the river just before the Devil's Corkscrew. One of their group was picked up by a raft at the river for heat exhaustion. Maybe there was a convenient extraction point down-river, or they got help from the many floating tours going down river.

The exact same thing happened to someone I knew a few years ago. Once at the bottom, their knee was hurting so bad they couldn't walk. The Ranger gave them the same advice....and no donkey ride. The Ranger told them they could stay at different campgrounds until their knee felt better. After a little while, their knee wasn't hurting as much and they were able to hike out. It seems like this happens a lot and the Rangers know how to deal with this. We are doing a 5 day R2R backpacking trip in a few days. Glad you made it out. Thanks for the video.

Last Sept at the age of 71 I completed the route you took in this vid, solo, 14 hrs. Next week I am going back on the "dreaded" south to north route so I can claim I completed the R2R2R. A couple of thoughts.1- "go slow to go fast" absolutely outstanding advice, I hope people who are considering this hike will heed it. Second, sir A BLACK HAT in that relentless sun???? (Well at least you are wearing a hat, I could not believe how many hikers I came across that were bare headed.) Third, great that you were using walking sticks, I don't know why more hikers on the R2R don't use them. They distribute your body weight and the load more evenly and can keep you from falling and twisting a knee or ankle or worse. Congrats on your accomplishment.

Thank you! I hope I can do what you do when I'm 71. Thanks awesome! Thanks for sharing your observations. The hat has some sentimental value so I take it on all my long hikes / runs. Good luck on south to north! It's amazing and you're going to love it!

Hi Jared, just rewatched video on PC big screen, first was on iPhone. You certainly have a very good camera, very good color. my biggest comment is how you're able to effortlessly talk while hiking uphill at what looked like a fast pace from watching the scenery go by, and this is after miles of hiking. I think you are ready now for sub-16-hour R3, keep that fitness up and I think you will go under 16 hours on R3 in October on cooler day

Wow guys! What a gnarly crossing! Great job sticking together and self-extracting. That's a tough day! How funny is this? I arrived on the South Rim same Saturday, and ran Rim2River the next morning. It would have been cool to run into you that weekend! Man was it windy on the S.Kaibab trail, up top. Currently training for another R2R run with my daughter, mid-August. If you guys haven't looked into it yet, you might investigate getting injections in your knees of your own stem cells, with your own platelet rich plasma. It's not covered by insurance, but you may find it buys you years of life for your knees.

@@livetruewithjt1551 Mid-August is well into their monsoon season, so overnight temps at the NR are 45, so that's the start temp at around 3am. Phantom will be about 80 when we come through around 6am. We'll be on Devil's Corkscrew while the 8 switch backs, and about 1/3 of the remaining climb, are still in the shade. There's typically good cloud cover that time of year, so the remainder of the climb will be in the 75-80*F range and we should be out by noon. It's always been a great time to run R2R, and this will be #9 for me, and #6 for Kate. I had to laugh when I saw you guys getting hammered by the wind. I came down from the top of the S.Kaibab, and was pushing the pace pretty good, in an effort to get to the bottom in an hour. As I came out onto the exposed area of "Ooh-Ahh" Point, a blast of wind hit me, and turned my sun hat into a sail. I had it hanging on my back, with my right arm through the chin string, bandolero style, so it wasn't flopping around with each stride. The wind grabbed the hat, and spun my shoulders around, and I thought, "So this is how I go?" Man blown off the GC Trail by gust of wind." I started laughing, and said, "Not today Grand Canyon." And off I went. 😂

Sorry for the late reply. It felt a lot worse for him at the time. The ice cold water of the Colorado really helped bring the swelling down so he could get himself out of the canyon. His knee was a little sore and a little swollen for a week or 2 after our trip but no serious injury.

This is like a "dont't do what I did" video. Incredibly dangerous to run down the canyon, almost guaranteed to sprain a knee or worse trip on something unexpected. Hiking while dark also is never a good idea. Rangers are only mimicking nature, and it's too expensive to save anyone not in critical condition. There also have been more than 10 helicopter crashes in the canyon. People should respect nature and understand your personal limits. It's okay to turn back. Preparation is key and shouldn't be something to cross off your bucket list. Nature may put an end to fulfilling those dreams.

Or everyone could just stay on their couch...? After 35+ years of not being to the bottom of the Grand Canyon, I have been back three times in the last year or so. Everyone needs to do it at their pace. If that is slow and steady for you, then yes go slow and steady. I am not as fast as MANY who pass me along the trail but that will not keep me on the couch. I LOVE the Grand Canyon! Each time I have been down to the bottom, there are MANY runners in the Canyon. I also haven't seen anyone with major injuries. Cramping - yes. Exhaustion - yes. Tired - yes. Major injuries - none. Come enjoy the beauty of this earth, especially the Grand Canyon!
