Grand Canyon Rim to Rim - We got a cabin at Phantom Ranch!
The holy grail of Grand Canyon trips involves a stay at Phantom Ranch. It only took me two years of trying, but I finally got a cabin. This meant we could ditch the heavy backpacks and go with day hiking gear, while still splitting the Rim to Rim hike into two days. Not to mention having a stay at what is basically the hotel with the best views in the world. This was happening!
We decided to hike from the Grand Canyon North Rim to the South Rim to save some of the elevaton gain. We shuttled trucks from the South Rim to the North, then set up camp outside the park on the north rim so we could get an early start.
6:00AM, we were at the North Kaibab Trailhead, ready to start our long day. The North Kaibab trail descends dramatically into the Grand Canyon in the first few miles, dropping thousands of feet in elevation. After a while you come to Roaring Springs and the Manzanita Resthouse. This is where you meet up with the creek where you will be near flowing water all the way down to the Colorado.
About halfway through the hike to Phantom Ranch, you come up to Ribbon Falls. Ribbon Falls is a unique and beautiful waterfall that is not to be missed! Well, unless you're Tina and you're completely exhausted and ready to get to your cabin at Phantom Ranch. I went solo and don't regret it for a second. Ribbon Falls is amazing.
Continuing on, you drop further and further into the canyon. The walls close in on you in the infamous "Box". The Box in the Grand Canyon traps heat and can be brutally hot at times. Luckily, the creek is nearby for relief.
And then you're there. Phantom Ranch comes into sight. Whether you're day hiking rim to rim or overnighting, it's definitely worth a stop at the canteen at Phantom Ranch to grab a lemonade or other snacks and supplies.
But for us, this was our destination for day 1. We had an amazing cabin, complete with electricity, a flushing toilet, beds and even air conditioning! I'm definitely not used to that kind of luxury when I hike. There are also showers! The vibe at Phantom Ranch is not to be missed. So laid back and chill.
We woke up and hit the trail by 3AM on day 2. I'm disappointed we missed the views of the Bright Angel Trail from the Silver Bridge up to Indian Garden Campground, but it was September and the heat was oppressive. For about a mile after crossing the Silver Bridge, you are on a trail on a sheer cliff adjacent to the Colorado River. I can't imagine the views and will definitely be back to see them when it's cooler.
At Indian Garden Campgrounds, it was time for a quick refill on water and a snack. Then it was on to the relentless switchbacks of the Bright Angel Trail. The Bright Angel Trail offers great views of the canyon below, but it seems to go on forever.
And then....that's it. You're at the parking lot and your journey is over. The crowds of tourists admiring the overlooks are jarring, yet you barely notice them because....you just hiked the Grand Canyon.
Overall, it's life changing. The Grand Canyon has me hooked and I can't wait to go back. Again and again and again.

Awesome video. I hiked the North Rim trail down and back in 1985 and this video shows how beautiful but taxing it is. In July, 2022, I was in the ER in Flagstaff. My room mate was a 70 year old from Illinois who attempted this trail with his sons. He collapsed near the bottom and was rescued by the park service with a helicopter. He had nothing but kind words for the park service. The group had done research and done most things right. But this video shows how taxing the hike can be even going down. The two sons reversed steps and hiked back to the north rim. It was very difficult for them. Well done to Jerry and Tina and this is one of the most beautiful videos ever. Thank you!

Another great video Jerry. So far I've been unsuccessful in obtaining a backcountry permit, but we'll just keep trying. I just returned from tent camping at Mather and day hiked Bright Angel and South Kiabab trails. I thought you might appreciate a short story. Your ears had to be burning. We were hiking Bright Angel and stopped for a break at the 1.5 mile Resthouse. We struck up a conversation with a group of guys, and it was not long until one of them mentioned your name. As it was, he too is a big fan of your channel and has also watched just about every video you've made. We visited 15 minutes sharing stories of your videos. It's almost like family.

That's crazy! I will never, ever get used to being recognized or the fact that people I've never met could meet and talk about these videos. I just love making them. And it's great that people enjoy them. I'll let you know a secret; just randomly check the current availability of Phantom Ranch online. As often as possible. That's how we got this. I didn't have any luck with the fax in reservation system for backpacking the main corridor.....although I'll keep trying that too.

You two had it easy. Picture this… you are sitting next to the dorm pool at ASU and your friend from North Dakota is graduating in a couple of weeks. For a graduation gift you suggest something memorable like hiking the Grand Canyon. She says sure but it would have to be the next day as she is busy with finals and graduation. Like an idiot, you agree. She goes off and takes a nap while you go and rent a car. You return and leave that night to arrive at sunrise at the South Rim Kaibab trailhead. Watch the sunrise and head down to Phantom Ranch. Have a beer (we’ll almost a beer, they only served Coors) and head back up to the South Rim via the Bright Angel trail. You make it to the top but your friend has to be back at ASU the next morning so you take the shuttle back to the Kaibab trailhead and then drive home while she sleeps. Yup two sleepless nights surrounding a down and back Grand Canyon hike. Doable in your 20s but only then.
@JerryArizona
@JerryArizona Год назад
Ah, college. Even then that sounds brutal though. Also, even as a Miller Lite drinker, I can say that Coors does not count as beer.

Proud of you Tina! You did it! I hiked to Phantom Ranch back when I was about 12 with my family from the South Rim. It was great fun then. Went back in my twenties with some army type leather boots. My Achilles’ tendon felt like it was being hit by a hard object coming back out every step. Never thought to go bare foot (that would have been better!). And I never went back again either. It is grueling! But, quiet beautiful. Thanks for sharing with us! Well done!

Beautiful hike. I did a rim to rim a few years ago, but that Cabin is a game changer! We did it in 4 days in May. My toes hurt so bad after going down from the North Rim that I ended up hiking in crocs for the final 3 days. They felt amazing. I had a permit to do Hermits Trail and Tonto Trail for 5 days about the same time you did this one. We were pretty worried about the heat warnings and not having water going up BA trail, so we were able to re-permit for late October. I'm not regretting my decision to delay! Thanks for the great video and commentary. I love that you both have a great sense of humor.

South Kaibab Trail. There's a reason why there is a stop on the trail called OohAhh Point. It can be stupid hot when it's hot, and it can be stupid windy when it's windy. But the views are outstanding and they give you lots of excuses to stop many times, repeatedly, while slogging up the many stairs... (Those stairs are officially called "retainers" per a park trail crew member. Looked like stairs to me... 🤔). Your content is immensely inspiring to get back down to my old stomping grounds. I went to the Grand Canyon for the first time on 9/27/22 and hiked the North Rim to the South Rim via Bright Angel, just like you. I did not stay at Phantom Ranch though and completed the hike in 11 hours. Before watching this video I had been disappointed in myself for not taking better care of myself during the hike such that I did not have the energy to hike South to North the next day. Ribbon Falls was amazing. Wish I could've convinced Tina to go. That stretch was just so hot and went on forever. She was just ready to get it over with. That moss is like a soft carpet and the water felt so good though....

Did this route ourselves, but in November. 17 degree start, beautiful descent, stellar overnight in Cabin 5, then up BA the next morning. 55 degree start and below freezing on S Rim. Tina: cold weather next time. it's still brutal, just not from the heat. The only way to do RTR: as a tourist not a racer.
@JerryArizona
@JerryArizona Год назад
Wish they'd leave the north rim open during the winter. They close it basically right when it's perfect GC hiking weather. Definitely nice to take it at a slower pace. We saw some guy doing R2R2R in a single day. That blows my mind.

@@JerryArizona We stayed at Jacob’s Lake Inn; the road was still open so we could park in N Rim lot and hike down. We cleared everything with the rangers, including taking our friends to N Rim Lodge and area, took photos, talked with maintenance people, and just marveled at being there when everything was closed down. Was back at dawn thirty the next morning to hike down to our cabin, eat at the Canteen (bison stew), and hiked out. we’ve done five backpacking trips into the Canyon, three with daypacks and stays at Phantom, two down Hermits. None in summer though only the one down N Kaibab. We say we need to keep going to places we’ve never seen, but Grand Canyon….

My husband and I hiked the hermit trail last year in October and even though it was breathtaking and amazing I thought I was gonna die before we finished. We did a 3 night 4 day backpacking trip down to the Colorado river and it was by far the hardest thing I have ever done. Great job!!!

Love it!! This made me so excited for my PR trip in about a month. My friend was fortunate enough to nab PR reservations back in June. We had a trip planned for mid-September but the pipeline was busted so we got cancelled. We were rebooked for October... 15th... sorry Jerry. Everything you captured is what we loved about staying at Phantom: the lemonade, the showers, the steak, and the AC!! Thanks Jerry for another great video.
