Hi! Just wanted to let you know we were nervous about hiking rim to river and back in one day, but your video inspired us and we ended up going for it. We're so happy we did, it was the best way to get the most out of a limited amount of time in the Grand Canyon area. Thanks so much!
hi Austin.. I know you posted this a year ago, but how fit do you have to be to do this? If you bring enough food & water, wear proper clothes and bring hiking poles should you be okay? I'm thin, but not super fit and early 30s. Thanks
Wow, watching this video from 6 years ago really was crazy bad, but the trek you made when you started out in the dark and ended in the dark was much much better, this must've been the beginnings of the first Wonderhussy attempts. I'm sure glad you improved over the years and you're just as tough as nails now as you were then. I guess soaking in the multiple hot springs made you retain your Wonderhussy supergirl powers. 😉😊😁😂😂😂
You are amazing to be able to complete that in a day. I know there are many others that do it and I am equally amazed by them. I hiked Kiabab to Tonto then Tonto to Bright Angel then through Indian Garden and back up Bright Angel. I'm glad I did but I would never do it again in one day.
Just did it yesterday:) nov is perfect time. I started at 8:30 am and ended up bright angel at 5:45pm. Even stopped at Phantom ranch for lemonade:) it was one of the greatest things ive ever done:)
Wow vid just popped up again. Planing my 4th r to river to r in March to celebrate my 70th birthday. This is one of my favorite parks. And of course I moved to Tucson now. It's 7.5 miles down 9.5 up bright angel
what a pup in this vid !! the other day you said you cuss like a trucker … welll hehehehe you did ! i love to see how you have grown in the you tube world … have a blast staying safe out there ...
What an excellent video sending me down memory lane, or trail. I hiked that steeper less traveled trail in 1979 and Phantom Ranch was much more primitive. More like a rustic Boy Scout building. They served Coors beer for I think only two hours per day which was great. Sandwiches, too. We met great people there then hiked to North Rim and off to Colorado. Great video, as usual.
Even though you are no longer a spring chicken, people should know you work out at the gym all the time and when you are not, you hike up mountains in your flip-flops! So do not try this out of shape! Very impressive WH!
I did this last week hiked down South Kaibob & stayed 2 nights at the Phantom ranch. We did the Ribbon Falls trail at the bottom & hiked up Bright Angle the next day. It took us 10hrs with our 30 lb backpacks! Next time i would like to do it without any weight to carry.. Its a beautiful and totally humbling experience! Loved it
Hey, thanks for all the great vids! I'm visiting Vegas next month and I'm not a casino type. I'm renting motorcycles for the whole week; I plan to see the beauty of the desert and canyons. Your videos are inspiring and a great resource for seeing the "road less traveled". Again, thank you!
Good Luck Darlin, tried that down an back when heavy set guy says, "no problem", then "I can't take another step at bottom"! Too heavy for mules so to he had to pay for helicopter! Be smart as well as careful!
Hi You are hiking beast. To know you are a petite model! Hike the rim to rim march 2018. 23.9 miles, down the north kaibab trail to phantom ranch, camp overnight at the bright angel creek and then back up the bright angel trail. It snowed at the top the day I got there to hike, cold and icy on the way down Excellent, beautiful hike.
When a friend and I hiked down the S. Kaibob Trail in ‘79 at a certain time of day you could buy Coors beer in that big room at Phantom Ranch, maximum two beers per person. We then stayed a week then hiked up the north rim and off to Colorado.
6:00 I did that same hike. If it's easy enough for an amputee (RBK) to do, I figure it's not that hard. But is is the toughest hike I ever did. It was cool to see it again.
About 40 years ago I met Edward Abbey and his father at Indian Gardens. The Park Ranger told us we couldn't camp overnight, Ed said to ignore him. We and a dozen others did, and walked out the next morning.
Surreal. Abbey is one of my favorite authors, and a true poet of the canyonlands. I think Sarah would get along splendidly with that cantankerous, whiskey-soaked, expatriated hillbilly.
Thanks for the vid, i plan to do this.....training now....i assume anyone can walk in and get food at phantom ranch like you got coffee without reservation ?
I've done south kaibab and up bright angel. I didn't do it in a day my friend and I camped at bright angel campground at the bottom. The rest at the bottom really helps you for the next day hike out. Getting a backcountry permit just takes extra planning.
I did Bright Angel's Trail in a day, but paid the penalty of suffering a huge blister on the sole of my right foot due to inappropriate footwear...camped on the rim that night...Awesome place.
My wife and I have done this a couple times. It's a blast! We went down the South Kaibab too, but then up the north rim and was met by a friend. There is a group from Ridgecrest that runs rim to rim to rim - in other words they run from one side to the other and back again without stopping. I'm too round for that!
+Larry Riendeau running doesn't sound like much fun, you wouldn't be able to see much of the scenery if you had to watch your stuff like that! But going from south rim to North Rim sounds like a lot of fun and I definitely plan to do that sometime
Was at the canyon back in Oct 2010. I considered hiking down to the river, but it was very rainy & muddy. Also, I was not prepared for any kind of hike, even though I was in good physical shape. Should have done more advance planning. I'm afraid I'm too old to safely try it now. Tch, tch, tch....
If you start on one trail and come back on the other trail like you did, will it bring you back to where you originally started? Planning a trip and would like to know, thanks.
No, best thing to do is park at the visitors center, take the bus from visitors center to Kaibab trailhead, do the hike and then take the bus back to the visitors center.
+Gully Foyle it's a great hike and I encourage everyone to do it sometime... Even if not all in one day, you can stay overnight at the bottom if you plan in advance
Late reply, sorry. There are free shuttles to and from the visitor's center to the South Kaibob trailhead and the Bright angel trailhead. If you park at one or the other yourself, there's an additional 6 mile walk across the South rim to get back where you started.
With a time machine you could go back 10 years and make reservations to stay at the bottom and go back 9 hours to remind yourself to bring your watch. I kid
I was really wondering why any one would throw a thumbs down on this ... I'm like yeah nice to see an old school wonderhussy video..... then at the end I see it's nice to eat a big ol steak..... and then light all it's a vegetarian's their brains don't work right they live in the basement of their parents house and their brains just don't really work right. ...... then I'm like oh okay that's why there are a 20 people with thumbs down.......
You can see why the Indians said the canyon is sacred ground. Of course we ran them out of there !😞Are you ever gonna take the mule tour??🤔You must not smoke if you. Can hike that terrain!!Are U under or over 100 pounds?😉
