We're pulling back the curtain for a behind-the-scenes look at our work to replace the Grand Central Terminal Train Shed, a critical piece of invisible infrastructure that is the main artery for trains entering and exiting Grand Central. MTA Construction & Development Senior Program Director Michael Feinberg leads us into the underbelly of Grand Central Terminal to show its current conditions and explain the repairs we're making to keep Metro North service running smoothly for the next 100 years.

It's about time. Some of the platforms and tracks were already in bad shape when I used to commute to and from the GST 20 years ago.

Building and construction in NYC must be such a nightmare

If they would think ahead (which they probably don't), they would rebuild it with provision for future overhead electrification.

Given that it seems like this is barely below street level, in fact that the roof of the station is the bottom of the slab and the top of the slab is street level, that would seem to require excavation to lower the floor of the station? That would be… expensive.

Oy. This is going to take a while.
@Tekker2234

It takes a while to do it right. Besides, replacing decaying infrastructure now is a lot cheaper, safer, and faster than dealing with a roadway or building collapse if the old structure gives way.

So when are you gonna extend the Shuttle all the way into GCT? And how about some people mover belts in the Penn MTA transfer passageway?

@@maciekkra539 What do you mean? The video shows that they open up roadway or sidewalk. (No estate above) The question is whether they open up enough of a hole that a passer by could see the train running below.

@@u1zhaThey opened it up basically removing the original roof. Listen to the commentary, they are replacing the roof. I assume you were asking if the open space will be left...no, because companies which have businesses above, have so-called air rights for which they pay to keep their business. That's why the roof replacement and eventual cover up. You might see trains temporarily as they keep uncovering piece by piece and maybe snap a couple of pictures here and there.

The US Shoudve put funding at infrastructure upgrades and not giving billions of dollars to israel
@Tekker2234
@Tekker2234 3 месяца назад
Well they also gave a ton of funding to infrastructure around the country recently. That has allowed for many projects that were previously stalled or delayed in the planning or initial construction stages to get moving again. This is not to say that they shouldn't stop sending military equipment to Israel, they really should, but that this is not a case of money for infrastructure being diverted to the military.

Blame the forebears who signed Budapest Memorandum of security assurances 🤷 Yes it would be a different situation if Ukraine had not been tricked to give up its nukes by signatories such as the US, UK and RU.

I wish the MTA would just build a full-fledged rail line on the IBX line instead of a meager light-rail line that will immediately be at full capacity when it opens. But hey, the money is going to Ukraine and Israel. They need it more than us, right?
