🛠️Stan from Over The Hill Adventures does another How-To video. He shows their viewers how he repacks the bearings on their 2021 Grand Design Imagine 2500RL Travel Trailer. Stan explains how important it is to at least check your bearings every 12,000 miles or every year. STAN IS NOT A PROFESSIONAL!! However, he enjoys saving money and doing projects himself. At the age of 15 years old, Stan rebuilt his first car engine. Since then, he has been doing his own maintenance and upgrades on all his vehicles, his boat, and his travel travel. While Stan does this DIY project, he also decides to check the trailer brakes and check on the wet bolts of his MORryde Suspension which he installed on his own in 2022. Come with Stan as he gives you detailed instructions how to repack your bearings with quality grease.

I've just retired at Christmas. and one of the first RV projects I wanted to do was repack my bearings in our Reflection 337. I've been watching as many videos, and while many are good, they usually had an abbreviated version and skipped something. Stan, this may be the best and most comprehensive video on repacking bearings I've seen. Outstanding! So I went out this afternoon and did my first wheel. I had to come inside a couple of times to fire up Stan on the video just to make sure I didn't skip a step. When I'm attempting something for the first time, I have a tendency to second guess myself so it always takes longer than I anticipated. Tomorrow, I hope to finish the other three. Thank you again for the good work!

GREAT JOB STAN, now that you have inspected and fresh grease, next time you can utilize the ez lube system , Mark the wheel at 12 'o'clock . 2 pumps then turn wheel 5 minutes and 2 more pumps, this will grease the inner and outer bearings and fresh grease will replace the old, you can use a different color grease so you see when new grease reaches the outer bearings, put a small pan under with wheel removed to skin out old grease, Lots of people make a mistake in not turning the wheel and the inside and outside bearings only get new grease in one little spot, Always turn it when grease goes in, another trick is to grab top and bottom of wheel to feel play in wheel bearing after your done, sometimes you may have to snug one wheel a little more after a small trip... Keep up the good work...THIS WILL HELP ALOT OF PEOPLE WITH RV'S ETC.....

Hi Todd, thank you for your input. I’m always worried about not getting grease to the inner bearing. I’m also worried about blowing out my seal with too much grease. Two pumps is very conservative can definitely live with that. I appreciate all your knowledge. Thank you! Stan

The Lazy Lube system is not the way to do it. It's like letting a blind man grease your brakes, you cant see if grease is bypassing the seal which will cause a brake failure. Why are people so LAZY when this is an easy job, and NO fresh grease will not fill the bearing, bad advise once again.
@toddhenshaw7621
@toddhenshaw7621 3 месяца назад
@@sundancer3700 AS i stated, after you just did the complete fresh pack with grease next time use the EZ - Lube System as designed it works great , I have done hundreds of grease jobs and if done properly the system works great, the one people do without turning the wheels end badly as you and I have seen probably more times than we can count..

You do need a socket to fit the castle nut. Dexter says to torque the castle nut to 50 ft-lbs after repacking the bearings to “set” the bearings into the races. After setting the bearings, back off the castle nut to finger tight.

Hello Mark, thank you! It was my understanding only when you have new bearings. However, it definitely wouldn’t hurt if I had one. Always like when folks share their knowledge. Thank you! Stan
@brentginastravelingadventures
Yeah, it's what you should do to seat them first. I don't use an actual torque, but take the wrench and crank it down a bit to get near the torque with the point being that it's good and tight before backing off for finger tight.

Nice video at 12:11 you have a nice close up shot of the magnet. You can see three holes in the magnet there should be a forth visible at 3 o'clock poison. These are called wear indicators. Once you can't see the holes any more you need to change the magnet. In this case the magnet holes might be blocked by dust.

At least check every 12,000 miles or 1 year. You want to make sure wheels turn smooth and your rear seals are not compromised. Also check for cracks in your rubber dust cover. Sand is notorious for bearing failures. Stan 👍
@bobanddangsjourney
@bobanddangsjourney Год назад
I am envious of your garage Stan. I have to do this on my gravel driveway - and I don't know why but I seem to always pick the hottest day of summer :( Great video - you covered all the points as far as I am aware - probably the best video I have seen on this topic. That's an interesting bearing packer - I use a slightly different style that you hook a grease gun to, but this looks pretty easy to use. I have seen recommendations to fill the entire cavity with grease afterwards using the zerk fitting and a grease gun, and I have done that, but maybe I'll try doing it the way you show here next time - sure a lot less messy when you have to get in there next time! I always keep an extra set of bearings/seals with me - firstly in case of a failure on the road, but also in case when I'm inspecting them they need to be replaced I have them on hand and ready - and they are not terribly expensive. Again, great production and very helpful - well done!
@OverTheHillAdventures
@OverTheHillAdventures Год назад
Hello Bob and Dang, thank you for your comment. So here is the problem with filling the cavity. The grease hole is on the back of the spindle. The main issue is you might blow your rear seal out. If you pump a couple pumps through the Zerk fittings I think you’ll be ok. Having to much grease in their causes it’s own problems. You definitely want to avoid a grease blowout and get it all over your brakes. Great idea of keep and extra set of bearings!👍 Thank you for your kind words we appreciate you. Stan and Rhonda

Well explained! Just the right amount of information and time. Thank you! But one question about jacking up the camper. Some say to place the jack under the frame rather then the axle. I see you do under axle close to wheel. Why not under the frame?
@OverTheHillAdventures
@OverTheHillAdventures Год назад
Hello Jonathan, it is not necessary to jack it up by the frame. Some folks jack the trailer by the frame so they can work on all four tires at the same time. That takes two big floor jacks and heavy duty jack stands like when I upgraded the suspension. It is important to jack up each tire close to the tire by the axle U bolts so you don’t bend the axle. The same way when changing the tire. However, I would always use jack stands under the frame or you scissor jack for safety when working on your bearings for safety. Hope this helps, Stan

You made it look fairly easy. You explained everything really well along the way. I appreciate keeping the videos explained for common folk. I will have your video close by for morale support. Where do you get your bearing seals at? I am not sure if they are all just one size fits all or there is a different size for each axel as they go up in pounds. I have Dexter 5100# axels. Looking forward to your video on lock replacement. Keep up the good work!

@OverTheHillAdventures
@OverTheHillAdventures 3 месяца назад
Hi Tim, that is a pretty easy job. I think you may be a little early. They recommend 1 year or 12,000 miles. What I think is more important is your bearings on your leaf springs. Do you have the stock suspension? Mine were totally gone after 10,000 miles.
@timothycole7410
@timothycole7410 3 месяца назад
@@OverTheHillAdventures You may be right. I'll certainly address the suspension inspection when I check my bearings. I have read 10,000 miles from Grand Design suggestion, but also seen 7500 miles (too late for me about 3000 miles ago). As I have two trips coming up: 1000 miles + 6500 miles; may strike at packing the bearings now when I have a few weeks RV downtime. ;) And thanks to you -- you made it look easy, only catch is if the bearing seal(s) require replacement (or spindle nut stop) -- then it's stop and off to Northern Tools (I just found out they have a vast selection of bearings & such).
@OverTheHillAdventures
@OverTheHillAdventures 3 месяца назад
Hi Tim, every time you pack your bearings you replace the seals. You got that right?
@timothycole7410
@timothycole7410 3 месяца назад
Yes. No choice. The seals are destroyed by the seal puller. Was suggested to me by a Grand Design individual to use a wood ram to knock off rear seal. Tried in 1 of 4 wheels and destroyed the rear bearing. But he did direct me to the CR3000 wet suspension as my Rv has simple leaf spring system, which is not up to par for >3k miles/year use. We’re doing 12k/year so far. And yep. Lots of towels!!! Lots. 😁

The zerk fitting pushes grease through the back bearing and push the grease through the shaft cavity out through the outer bearing with the drum installed... can do this periodically in between repacks. If you see water or discolored grease will give you early warning of bearing failure.

Great video. Quick question about the lug nuts. Is there some sort of cap on them? I was doing some regular maintenance and the lug nut seems to have crimped and now I can’t get the socket around the lug nut itself. The RV place I called is saying the entire drum needs to be replaced so I don’t think they’re understanding my issue.

It is very possible you have a different size lug nut. Sometimes when they tighten them too much they mushroom. You need to get it off and replace.

I'm old, crotchety and retired but I spent 20 years plus with trucking, heavy equip. op., farm equip and eventually 17 years patrol cars. EZ Lube is a easy out for the modern generation who wants the "EZ Way" to do things instead of the best way. Bearings have to be broken down, cleaned, visually and most important FELT to check for problems. First thing to do with a new trailer, especially a RV is get it home, do a physical bearing replacement with Timkens and do a repack every year/10,000 miles.

@@freefrankgable for the same reason GD is connecting vinyl water line hose to PVC hose & fittings which is against code in residential construction. Look under your sink and toilet etc etc. The same reason GD claims a R-40 insulation in the roof which is physically impossible. Same reason your tongue weight is probably 50% more than they showed in the sales propaganda. Manufacturers can not be trusted. The RV Industry is using the cheapest components they can find. I know of two new trailers that caught on fire because they didn't have enough bearing grease and bad bearings from the factory.. The bearings they're using are cheap Chinese junk. At 60 Mph the only thing touching the pavement are your tires. They're on wheels held onto the axle and rotating by axle components. When it comes to running gear I want the best and they get a lot of attention.

When I used to pack wheel bearings, I would remove the front bearing and then replace the nut. Then I would pull the drum out quickly and the nut would remove the rear seal and bearing. But you missed putting fresh grease on the back side of the brake shoe where it touches the backing plate. You must do this so the shoe can pivot properly. Also at the end you have to preload the bearing to 50 pounds with a torque wrench before backing off the nut. If people follow you the bearing may overheat and wheel fall off, learn how to do it right.
@OverTheHillAdventures
@OverTheHillAdventures 3 месяца назад
It is always great to have someone comment with so much infinite wisdom. What I was taught not torque when repacking old bearings. When putting in new bearings absolutely correct to torque your bearings nut down to 50lbs WHILE turning the drum. Never heard of put grease anywhere near the back of the brake shoe. That will contaminate the break shoe. However thank you for your wisdom. Different strokes for different folks.

@@OverTheHillAdventures Bearings need to be preloaded regardless if new or old for proper seat then back it off. Shows you dont know the proper way if you dont grease the back side of the shoe, there are two raised areas that slide on the backing plate that require a dab of grease and wont contaminate the shoe. Ok, I typically don't criticize how-to videos, but why in the world would you ever fill the cap with grease after packing the bearings, especially with a greaseable spindle? I've been repacking bearings for over 50 years, including semi-tractors and trailers (before oil bath), farm tractors and equipment, boat trailers, utility trailers. livestock trailers...and have never filled the cap with grease, although I've been annoyed when someone before me has. It's not going to work its way from the cap into the bearing and it would just make that much more mess when you repack it next time. You would have to dig it out to even find the grease zerk if/when you want to add grease. The only exception might be a boat trailer with a spring-loaded bearing buddy that helps prevent water from entering around the seal and it's pressurized from the outside. If it makes you feel better to do so, go ahead, but that bearing isn't going to last one mile longer for doing so.
