Grand Designs Series 5 Episode 13 With Kevin McCloud.
BAFTA winning Grand Designs is widely recognised as the pre-eminent series on modern architecture and design in Britain. It was originally conceived as a documentary series presented by designer and writer Kevin McCloud that takes us into the heart of life’s great unfolding human stories, where ordinary families risk all to experiment with architecture, technology, and their own lifestyle.
Now in its 24h year, Grand Designs is one of Channel 4’s biggest returnable factual series and has grown into a global phenomenon, selling in over 100 territories. Apart from the TV series, the Grand Designs brand has also expanded to include books, a monthly magazine, architectural awards and a biannual exhibition, Grand Designs Live.

I read somewhere, that they had opened a B&B in that place, with great success. And later-on, retired from the business… I wonder what the place looks like now, almost 20 years to the date… it is, one of the best proyects I have watched. Thanks for uploading it,

English Heritage has something to answer for here telling them there's no problem. Knowing fully well all the red tape and hoops to jump through owner should have been fully advised on the rebuild.Glad Kevin brought this bs to light .

This couple are PHENOMENAL and this is THE MOST IMPRESSIVE BUILD I've seen thus far, in the past 7 to 10 years.( And ALL I watch are shows about houses!). The stone work is stunning. Just STUNNING! As for the Stone Masons ... "Chapeau!!" The staircase ... I'm just speechless. The quality of the entire house is unbelievable. I kept looking at all the rooms, thinking "THIS WAS NOT HERE!!!" It was all reconstructed! Their vision was/is extraordinary. I wish them the best of The Best because they deserve it. They are lovely, modest people and no one deserves better than they. You don't do that sort of crazy thing unless you've been captured by a dream. What a dream!

Why aren’t there grants to help these people with archeology, etc.? English Heritage is content to stand by while for it falls down but when someone steps up to try and save it there is no help. Bizarre.
@theparkourlady894

Agreed. They seem to make it so hard to do anything with these old buildings, offer no financial compensation, block every effort to try move ahead at a pace that is feasible, but then sit around complaining that these buildings are falling down and no one wants to help. It's so silly. I understand that they're trying to maintain certain standards to maintain the authenticity of the structures, but honestly if they don't step up and make it more of a help than a hindrance they're going to lose the buildings because no one will be interested in dealing with that red tape. Honestly after watching that guy from the heritage council just justifying the actions of the council with such glee and zero sympathy for the home owner, I'd just be like f this, the thing can fall down its not worth dealing with them. That attitude is also just really stupid. The type of people who restore ancient buildings like this privately are not millionaires. Millionaires build from scratch coz cost isn't a consideration. Honest hard working people scrape together funds to restore something like this because it's a dream and passion. They're shooting themselves in the foot big time having this attitude that potential building savors must just be prepared to drown in debt while dealing with their 💩. Because honestly no building is worth dealing with people like that, which is another reason that rich people won't bother they're going to lose the things they're trying to protect. Rather go to France. They seem to be a bit more liberal and helpful there wrt to trying to get people to restore their historical buildings.

All through, it kept popping up into my mind - why not write a letter to Charles (Prince as he was then) to see if he could come up with a grant or low interest loan? Him being so keen on preserving the heritage of the country.

Watching this episode of Grand Design . Is a real eye opener !" To find this very old castle in the kind of shape it was in . To what it is now . Is really something else !!" It's the before and after look . Your attention to detail and your own design is just outstanding . . . . . And to have the understanding of your wife . To tackle and finish your dream house . Plus the help of all the craftsman working to have the castal restored . But also something everybody can be proud of . Not just to live in . But also to create !" Congratulations !!" Enjoy your new old home . . . . . Gene ,

-Your sentiment certainly has merit, but once an ancient site is changed, the ability for people to ever explore its history is forever harmed. Whether one family gets to live in a childhood dream castle is of little consequence to the rest of humanity. But the active---if unintentional--destruction of our access to history permanently destroys all ability to know that portion of the past. In the case of England, the massive construction and alteration projects of the 1800s permanently destroyed a lot of access to England's history. They are loathe to repeat that mistake so easily again.

EH and Amc are true villians in this build. They did absoluty Nothing to save it. Francis and Karen and all the craftsmen are the true Hero's here. EH only demained, and gave nothing in return, no finanial aid, no leeway, nothing, that inspector even said"roping in", so shamefull, they would do nothing to save it, yet get to make very costly decisions that the owners were most capable of making on there own. Congratulations on them.

It is a shame that the British Heritage considered the building "important" and had had years to investigate the archeology, but instead sat by watching the building become a ruin. You'd think that they'd make it easy for someone do anything with the building. Having the building exist in way, shape, or form is better than it falling down altogether.

I work in restoration in the Netherlands. Of course there are many hoops to jump through here as well, but not even 20% of the British situation. Blimey Heritage is rigid in those cases.... prescribing stone from a closed quarry for heaven's sake! Mention an alternative, have your experts think along, 'line up all the noses in the same direction' as we say over here! Aaarrrrghh

The accent of the English Heritage man and the way he sneered "we dont just hand money out to anyone wanting to make a private home ", whilst talking about a family that have invested everything they have to save a building that they love and that is minutes away from falling down and not existing at all says just about everything we need to know about who cares about what.

How often have I wished in my lifetime to do exactly what this architect and his wife are doing. - hanging onto the last refuge of History, so vital for we humans. Restoring these ancient castles I'm sure it could be done with those who are like minded. National Heritage has become restrictively bogged down and mentally tired. Time for fresh wind.

I'm sorry to say but the CEO of English Heritage in the interview with Kevin McCloud, sounded and spoke like a real prick. If English Heritage wants to conduct an archaeological survey, surely all they should be empowered to do is pause any construction until they have completed the survey. They should not however, be charging the owners for the survey. Furthermore, once construction has started, there should be a regulation in place that no further archaeology can take place. Essentially a 'time up' regulation which should be coupled with a regulation of no more than 3 months for the one and only survey. It is absolutely ludicrous that they put these buildings on an endangered list and then sit around in their fancy London offices, hoping that someone will buy the property to renovate it and save it, but won't do anything at all to help with the restoration in terms of grants but keep adding conditions as if it is they that own the place. Seems to me that English Heritage needs a good shake up and new laws in place to curb their powers and delusions of grandeur.
