Grand Funk Railroad Live - Are You Ready (1969)

One of the historic early appearances, at the Texas International Pop Festival (August 30 to September 1) in Lewisville, just north of Dallas.
Grand Funk opened all three days for free and made quite a sensation, just like they did in Atlanta [Pop Festival] nearly two months earlier.
Standing ovations of an estimated 120.000 total had Grand Funk multi-encoring to the point Farner couldn't even walk off stage! (a common situation in later shows...)
More than 12 hours worth of footage films stored at the Historic Films selves waiting in the obscurity for somebody to make a move... A movie! Just like a group of intelligent people did with Festival Express! Ironically, the Railroad was absent in that 1970 Express... More ironically, absent they were from Woodstock (even if they had been asked to play) because Mark was still recovering from some very bad beating a few weeks after the Atlanta triumph... (By most accounts, Grand Funk's first public appearance after Mark's incident was in front of 30.000 at the Centennial Park [Nashville Music Festival] August 22 - 24)

The appeal of Grand Funk to me was always just straight up, no frills Rock.. no crazy guitar solos.. no weird effects.. no stupid lyrics.. just flat out rocking.. it's no wonder they were a crazy good live band.

I was here, I had just turned 15. They offered to play free if they could open all three days. First time anybody heard of them and they f*cking blew us away! And in great company: first day they were followed by Canned Heat, second by Chicago Transit Authority, last day by Johnny Winter! Those really were magical times.

ron shifflett one the best power trios hands down,****I.ll always love that green messenger guitars, gave the band that sick fuzz tone only the messenger had, love this,NO pedal boards, tons of effects, plug in turn amps to 11 n let your soul pour out....today it's like 30-40 effects on a stage n sounds like crap compared to the plug n blast off method.. real talent is just that.

Yeah, top notch bassist no doubt. He really plays some flowing, imaginative bass lines always with that groove and power. He and Mel lay it down on this song. Mark is so good of course. Yeah Mel never got enough ink in the press, I may have read an article in Guitar Player but that was about it. He's looking so cool at this show too!

@@jasondorsey7110 Yes, most certainly! I just read through an old talkbass forum thread on what Mel used but nobody mentioned the wattage on those Wests. Must've been in the 200 watts territory. A Mudbucker pickup was also talked about, wasn't aware of those. Turns out I was right--200 watts, just found this great vid on here about his actual amp head! Hmmm, this is quite interesting--they inserted an actual distortion pedal inside the amp with it's own power supply! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-TKE44YyRa98.html

The guy smiling in the crowd at 1:57 looks like Frank Beard from ZZ Top. It wouldn't surprise me if it was, because I understand a lot of local aspiring rock stars were in attendance at this festival. Members of Bloodrock were there, as well as Kerry Livgren from Kansas, who drove down I-35 from Topeka to see GFR, because he was looking for a singer to emulate Mark Farner.

To motodrummer: Nah man. GFR had an incredible raw energy that changed after they scored their first big AM radio hit with "We're An American Band" in 1973. Mark Farner even admits it. Fans put GFR in two categories....the three piece and the four piece. When they added Craig Frost on keyboards in late '72 they got too glossy sounding. Nothing against Craig's talent, but it softened them up.

You can see the Audience coming to the realization that something pretty fucking awesome was happening on stage. Grand Funk was a last minute fill in and no one expected much and this was to have been their only performance. They wound up playing all three days moving from the bottom filler act to the opener for the headliners the closing day.

Not only did Chip Monck announce them as Grand Funk Railway--but THE Grand Funk Railway--just as he later in the evening announced THE Led Zeppelin. Because in the 60s, it was thought you couldn't be a band unless your name began with the article THE. Just as in the beginning, it was THE Cream, THE Pink Floyd, THE Blue Cheer, THE Iron Buttferfly, THE Jefferson Airplane, etc.

+Mike Corey I agree. I played with Bloodrock for a regional tour in 1975. We did three cities with GFR and I got to know Knight well. Mark Farner and I had a few talks about God and this and that. The best Pop and hard rock ever, all over the world, too bad was punished by the government for telling the truth about the situation in those days like People lets stop the war and other songs that told what we are living today 2020, radio stations did not play the songs they supposed to, just what sounded commercial, getting ready for the selfish tunes coming in the 80s, pretty songs to make money and more money; I am glad this kind of musicians existed in the wonderful land of the north, wonderful native people, wonderful nature, these musicians will be recognized and glorified perhaps few hundred years just like some Classic music people. Cheers from Xela , Guatemala, Central America, make peace, not war.

Imagine how much better Woodstock would have been a couple of weeks earlier if they had Grand Funk and Led Zeppelin on the bill? Oh well, their loss--Lewisville's gain!

They warmed up for Led Zep in Flint and Zep refused to take the stage after Funk played Mark had the weirdest sound on his guitar but when he kicked on that fuzz box it rocked. His clean sound left a lot to be desired though. Flint Michigan garage band makes big story.

Really had to share my thoughts.... Man, Don and Mark are 21 here, Mel is 18.....and back then, people of their age were tryin' to change the world.....while today I sit here behind this screen (age 20), feeling pissed 'cause I haven't really done much with my life....What's wrong with me and with my generation? Nobody fucking wants to do anything but try to get through their little depressive lives following the path of least ressistance..... what's going on, mind control? something else? Sorry world, for my generation.......something has to be changed....soon.

Not only that, but kids just out of their teens looked older back then. Heck, Mel looked like he was 40 and he was the youngest kid in the band!

Mind control doesn't work only on younger people. To tell you the truth when you are young no matter the generation you are still pure from the shit society tries to implant you and you still try to force your way out.. But tell me how the hell we have reached in the place we all worldwide are at the moment? They pays us crumbs, work insane hours instead of 8 hours per day, everything is getting more and more expensive, taxes on top of taxes, people losing their respect towards other people, their planet even their selves. How did this happen in older people, 30+? We do nothing just sit in our "luxuries" the system cleverly provided us we are cut out from meaningful things in life and everything goes towards the worse. Of course the younger generation is always a breeze of hope but what the fuck do the rest of us do?

What I see by observing people and how society is that adults are far more naive ignorant than children. And yes I am going that far saying that. I believe your defenses are much stronger when you are young from all the control and brainwashing etc. As you said look around you the choices and action people in their 30s 40s and goes on. The things they believe the things they do are absurd. Sometimes you wonder are these people braindead they cannot believe that or do this.. Its far more deep than just political talk. You cannot find the root of the problem in mankind by just talking politics or which religion is wrong/right. Also about my syntax and proof reading I don't care that much about this since English is not my native language and I believe we can communicate just fine even at my current level. I do enjoy GFR music hope you enjoy as well!
