I CAN'T AND WON'T SAY THAT THEY ARE BETTER THAN JANIS JOPLIN AND BIG BROTHER, THE DOORS, LED ZEPPELIN, JEFFERSON AIRPLANE, THE GRATEFUL DEAD, COUNTRY JOE AND THE FISH, CREAM, THE YARDBIRDS ORDER FRANK ZAPPA TO NAME A FEW 💜🤎💙🖤🤍💛♥️💚💜
@donhagerty5669 c'mon man, they are heads & shoulders above Big Brother & Holding company...they were nothing w/o Janis Joplin Certainly on par with Zeppelin, Cream, Doors
The Rock n Roll Hall of Shame is a sin, literally and figuratively. It was developed by 'secret society' Freemasonry to honor those who honor the devil...
Okay, so it's 1975, I'm 16 years old and I have a '66 GTO with Grand Funk Railroad blasting through my Audiovox 8-track and my Jensen 6x9 triaxial speakers. Hot damn what a time to be young.
Well, I was already 19 in '75 and drove my all time favorite car, a '71 Cutlass SS, posi-traction, four barrel, duel exist, with a slap stick my boyfriend at the time, put in for me. Yup, you can tell I hung out with motor heads, all of my brothers and my boyfriend's friends...had a car club, then a van club in '76! Those were good times...we went to the Summer Nationals drag races every summer, in Englishtown, N.J! It was the whole weekend camping outside the race track in the fields there,so needless to say it was a huge party with a lot of crazy fun memories...I say this, because Grand Funk was always being played in the background it seemed. Sadly, I never got to see them in concert😢It was a good time to be alive!
Mark Farner...what a leader in this truly American band! They knew how to really jam in all their songs! I miss them from those early days back in the late 60s & 70s
I was the annoying little sister back then and would drive around with my sister and her husband, then boyfriend, and this was always playing on an, (get ready for this), 8 track player in his car. This was one of their very favourite bands. I didnt appreciate it too much then but I sure do now. Their cover of Locomotion gives it a whole new life. I also remember buying a 45 of We're An American Band and I thought I was so cool because it was bright red. Yes the beginning of fancy Vinyl. LOL LOL My sister passed back in 2010 from breast cancer but right up to her final day she always love Grand Funk. I know she is with me every time I listen or watch these guys. Lets get it Judy😇😇🎶🎶🎸🥁🎹🎸🎸🎤
Don Brewer is SUCH a solid drummer. He puts all the energy he has into his instrument. I learned SO MUCH from him as a young drummer and at 66yrs. I haven't changed my mind!
Nice, played all their Music as a young Drummer, they were the BAND......@67 I agree, the tempo changes in 1 song can be many, I just played I'm your Captain on 1 of my Sets, It was a work out, haven't played that in years, But memory bounced back quick....
I`m now nearly 70 years old, a few weeks, but this band is the best what you can hear at all time. Such a dynamic in the play. Greetings from germany to all fans. @@tracyeaves4847
their harmonies, his vocal range, stage presence, enthusiasm and foot stompability was absolutely contagious. When American Rock & Roll really did rule!
I have to laugh when I hear someone from today’s music talk about the energy they put into a show. This is pure energy and it’s done without any extras. Simply put, great music doesn’t need the trappings of today’s music to be great! They did it with pure talent!! ❤️
FREAKIN RIGHT THEY DID!!! They had a little help with (at the time) modern audio technology, but look at GF & several other 4pc, & EVEN 3 pc bands like ZZTOP, S R V, & MANY others that HAD THE TALENT & MADE IT SOUND PRETTY DAMN GOOD, and YES the ENERY was DEFINETLY THERE!!!!!!
Kathy Brown Here's a trivia question, to which. I know not the answer!? We can both probably realize many of the influences that both Mark Farner & SRV had in common!!! I just heard SRV in the past 2 GFR tunes! Question being who influenced who between those 2 ,or since they both came to be about the same time, might they have influenced EACH OTHER!?!?
It surely did 🤘🏼, and I think that's why Grand Funk Railroad records from the late 60's and the 70's sold like crazy here in Japan. Toshiba also did a phenomenal job mixing and pressing thoes JP pressings of Grand Funk records back in the day
The DISC is Japanese. The concert is as American as Mark, Don, Mel and Craig. June 2nd, 1974 at the San Diego Sports Arena, filmed to promote the "Shinin' On" album.
What I admired about Mark Farner was that he was one of the very few guitar players worldwide that never had to have his eyes on his fingers and guitar while playing. Mark the extraordinaire guitarist doing his thing. Millions of guitar player's past, present and future have to ALWAYS keep their eyes on the guitar and their fingers while they play. Mark Farner Was Grand Funk Railroad With A Style All His Own.
Sorry, but I disagree... I'm a player myself, armature admittedly, but I've been playing almost daily since the late 70's and if you watch Mark closely, he is absolutely making sure he's on the mark. His great talent is that he can do his frontman shtick so well that it appears he never looks at his instrument. One of the most underrated frontmen as far as I'm concerned....
If you ain’t tapping your foot whilst listening to this you’re either deaf or dead!!!! These guys were on the top of the rock roll mountain during the early 70s....
Nothing beats the first live album. Raw, pure Mid-American rock with soul. Me and my 2 brothers listened to it on our mono record player every morning to get ready for school in 1970.
I'm 65 now, and I was at this concert at the Los Angeles Forum with my girlfriend in 1974. One of the best concerts I have ever been to. What a great band!!
This video's got them when I think they were at their best. Shinin' on was a well oiled machine on that one. I am so jealous that you were there. Don just whales through all these songs, perfect. Being there, hearing that live, DAMN....what a show it was.
We used to see them everywhere around Flint. IMA autorium,A little park just outside the city limits I can’t think of the name. Same with Bob Seger and Ted Nugent. They were all road dogs back then. Grand Funk went to the same High School I went to Flint Kearsley. About 5 years ahead of me.
Footstompin' Music 0:35 Rock & Roll Soul 4:45 Heartbreaker 8:44 Shinin' On 16:38 The Loco-Motion 22:29 We're An American Band 28:42 T.N.U.C. (With Drum Solo) 32:23 Inside Looking Out 42:44
When I was still in HS, I went to Grand Funk Railroad concert in Wilkes-Barre PA. Mark Farner still had the band as a power trio at the time. The opening act was Blood Rock. I think they were from Texas. Never heard of the band ever achieving much success. Of course, GFR was from Michigan. My friend's father was a hot shot doctor in Wilkes-Barre, and he got tickets for us in like the third row. Right down in front. It's still the loudest concert I ever attended. My ears didn't stop ringing for 3 or 4 days afterwards. They played every song from the red album. We all had a really great time.
I forgot to mention my good friend, Paul Greasmer, whose father treated a couple of Paul's friends to the concert. Paul, if you're out there and, by chance you read this comment, I want to thank you again for treating us to the GFR concert. I've never been so close to a stage as I was at that concert. We all shared the opinion that Mark Farner put on an unforgettable show that night. During the second half of the concert, he took off his t-shirt; he looked like Tarzan playing an electric guitar. Those were some special times. In particular, I remember you doing the 40 yard dash in your high-top football spikes. You still had the fastest time of the day! The coaches were dumbfounded. I hope you kept it up, you would have made a great tight end.
@rogerspalding5673 R. we must have caught the same tour, line-up and all; I remember Mark sans shirt on top of speakers about 20 ft high ... Bloodrock was mesmerizing ...
They thought they could just find any ol guitar player to replace Mark Farner…O hell no,,,it don’t work like that. I never listened to anything they did without Mark in the band. But I did listen to all of Marks solo stuff, the man is awesome…still 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Mark went off on a "teligious path"...so...another sad loss...I actually met him at NAMM...saw the band at Cincinati stadium in their heyday...they "shook the stadium! My first eber successful bsnd played some their songs and people thought we were GREAT. ..they didn"t know the bad! Suprised not many of their big hits in this show...
The big daddy of all bands!!!!!!!!! Their talent is to this day BEYOND BELIEF! They were absolute masters at what they were doing. Lovely to see them live in action in the prime of their youth!
They were the masters of Funk. I grew up with these guys. I still consider them my favorite band. Saw them in concert many times. I've never seen a show more enjoyable & tight as these guys. I'm 66 and still rocking with them.
Same here Mark. Saw them in Atlanta Ga in 71. They won my heart. I'm 74 and still have to get up boogie when I listen to them. I'm so glad I found this on You Tube. WoW! Rock in Soul
These guys are incredibly underrated, some of the best musicians in the world, not just America, bad to the bone, music is in their blood, love it, living legends.
One of the GREATEST American rock bands of the 70's.... Without any doubt.... These guys could rock with the best of the best.... High energy... Excellent version of "Heartbreaker" & "Shinin On" here too....
Back in the day, I played in an R&B band, but we opened with "Are you ready". And even in the 'hood, they jumped to their feet and Jammed! That 1970 Live album is still in my top 10 best rock albums all time!
@@lilyofthevalley5586 The best live rock group of all time. #1. Sad that Mark Farner was screwed. It is the main reason they are not and never will be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Mark Farner is Grand Funk Railroad.
NOT IN THE ROCK & ROLL HALL Of FAME SHAMEFUL One of the BEST ALL AROUND FRONT MEN,,,,,, Don Brewer badass drummer and perfect fit for background vocals This video Really shows the power of Don Brewer,,,,,,,,,,,🏆
I seen them 8 years ago here in Oregon. They sounded pretty good, but it took three people to cover Mark Farners vocals, lead guitar and keyboard parts. Indeed Grand Funk Railroad is a cover band without Farner..
@@Mff48 my girlfriend and I almost made it on stage but got stopped right after we were over the guard railing they put out to keep people from rushing the stage.
Mark is one of the greatest quitar players ever and this whole band needs more definition for no band rocked & grooved better than them and need to be in RRHOF PERIOD!
@@robertcarter9350 Mark plays drums now, since the bank broke up. I have one of his drum sticks. I had to wrestle it away from some big guy that wanted it. I caught it and i wasn't going to give it up.
Not only the fact that Mark Farner was the hottest thing on stage he was a lead guitar player and sang lead vocals! Do you know how hard that is? He was an insane showman and also a fantastic blues singer/ rock singer!! This group had it all! I miss this !
Enough energy to drive the Universe!!! Quality singer, quality drummer, quality everything! There will never be another band as rock steady as Grand Funk! These guys had flaming hearts.
One of the best recorded concerts by one of the best bands of the 70's. Unbelievable performance, this is a must watch concert. Grand Funk left it all on the stage.
I just can’t get enough of Don Brewer on Shining on and We’re an American band. Just like that other great drummer and lead vocalist Don Henley from The Eagles. Don is just so energetic and charismatic that he is a world of his own. Kudos to the four of them and screw the Rock and roll Hall of Fame!,,,,
The “hall of shame” is not about Music, it’s about politics. On top of that Mark is a Christian and the ideologically possessed ScumBags who control that farce cannot and won’t have him in their “institution”. You said it Man, Screw ‘em!
Grand Funk Railroad is 'second to none' when it comes to live performing and that includes 'The Who'. The whole bands energy, rhythm, and vocals are remarkable. This concert is amazing!
Absolutely a killer live band!! I mean, most live shows back then didn`t sound as polished and as full of energy as GFR did. My goodness so amazing they sound!!
@ Ken Adams -- to your point... "Mark Farner is as real as dirt"... stated his step-father who who helped raise him, (after the death of Mark's dad). What a tremendous compliment!!!
I saw them at the Syndrome in Chicago in 1970. "Inside looking out" is one of the greatest shreds of all time. The energy these guys injected into a room was astounding. Ps. I was 17 years old and Farner was only 22!
The high-enerigy of GFR;s playing is literally "off the charts". Even when they slow it down with some blues on Heartbreaker the energy doesn't lag. They were the hardest rocking band in the whole music business at their peak which is exactly what is on display here.
@@rickleblanc8900... It's easy because it's true... almost everybody was doing coke back then... Some still are... It's just the way it was like it or not
@@ernslinger4333I love it nothing wrong with doing cocaine it just makes them cooler in my opinion! I don’t want to listen to a bunch of nerds I want to rock out to party animals that’s real rock culture
Chuck ratings are only used By untalented people To think that their argument is right About who is the best band Eyes Don't lie And ears can hear That's what really matters
The band caused me pick up a guitar and learn to play drums 50 years ago. Been in several bands thru the years and still rocking out to this day. Keeps you young at heart. Mark Don and Mel. Rock and roll souls. 🎸
Man, I came across this video and have been playing it all week. Never really paid GFR much attention in the past because it was just a bit early for me, but now I'm all ears. Mark Farner is nothing less than incredible. Pure talent on that stage!

@@audreyann1975 It is only money that is sought and those who listen to that music are empty, they lack musical opinion they hear what others, now I am understanding why it has not been valued. Most of them would never be signed today. Record labels don't invest in talent any more - they make a quick profit by manufacturing product, then dumping it and manufacturing another one. The days of A&R people finding a band and investing in them long term, letting them do what THEY want to do, are long gone. That's why we had Pink Floyd, GFR, Led Zep etc and they have Justin Beiber and Little Mix.
@@shaunkelly9860 Now, but only at the commercial level, because people still want to be in Blues and Rock concerts, that is why I have always said that Industry is the enemy of Culture. thanks for watching
Oh hearing those classic Grand Funk Railroad songs sure brings back good memories of high school in the mid 1970s, back when great music came out of Michigan. 👍👍
Proud to say I play in a Nashville based classic rock band and we play some of their tunes. Their music should always be played and preserved. Grand Funk Fabulous .🎸
Try watching them live while you're nice and high on drugs....nothing like it. They blew the roof off everywhere they played. So tight, so perfect, such an incredible band.
Super talented amazing great band...these guys absolutely blew others away and powerful tours and concerts that were all incredible...even other high talent musicians would only say WOW..and have to respect their skill, their playing, singing and creativity...the real deal of high level excellence
In order to be Grand Funk, you need two meet two qualifications: (1) You need at least two of the three original members (2) One of those originals has to be Mark Farner.
kblackley Without Mark Farner Grand Funk is nothing but a tribute band.I watched this video over and over in the 80s buying a bootleg video of this..But i lost that video moving in about 2005.Glad to see it again.Like seeing an old lost friend again. This rocks.Reminds me of the awesome concert i saw them play at Randalls Island Pop Fest 1970.

On a scale of 1 to 10, I give GRAND FUNK RR exactly 111. OMG this has just fermented into such a memorable jam from the MOST under-rated R 'n R band of all time. The sun will never set as long as Mark, Don, and Mel are here to feed light to our musical appetite. Haven't been this FUNKED up since my last GRAND railroading 🍒
